Morbio wrote: Sun Apr 28, 2019 12:13 pm It would be interesting to see an event based around Ancient Britain. There are a lot of army types in that area not so often used and it would provide some interesting challenges, especially if an invading Roman army was thrown into the mix! :)
I have had a look but I cannot see that there would be enough armies or scenarios for an "Ancient Britain" theme.

Armies
Ancient British 60 BC - 80 AD
Caledonian 50-225 BC
Roman 24 BC - 196 AD
Scots-Irish 50 BC - 476 AD

Scenarios
Watling Street 61 AD

Really I would need at least one more army for the group stage because I think the Roman army might be too strong for, say, the Caledonians. So really the Romans would work best in the KO stage where we use paired games. But there is only one scenario available as far as I can see. We would need 2 more scenarios to cover the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.

Have I missed anything? If not the only possibility is to add the Gauls, maybe theming it as "The Roman Conquest of Gaul and Britain". This would give us . . .

Armies
Ancient British 60 BC - 80 AD
Caledonian 50-225 BC
Gallics 100-50 BC
Scots-Irish 50 BC - 476 AD

Scenarios
Bibracte 58 BC
Alesia 52 BC
Watling Street 61 AD

Would that work for Season 6? I also plan to use jomni's Silk Road mod for one Themed Event and I am also writing a new group of scenarios now that might be used one day as well.

That's a neat idea. If you're going to do the conquest of Gaul, don't forget to include the Germans. :)

Once the timeline expands up to the 11th century a Britain themed event could be interesting. Starting with the Ancient Brits, Romans, Caledonians, Scots-Irish then moving on through Romano Brits, Saxons, Vikings and finally Normans.

Yes, that would definitely work for a Themed Event in the future.

I am just repeating this message as recruitment will open in just 10 days time . . .

If those of you who are also playing in Slitherine's automated "Indian Spring" tournament could mention the next season of the FOG2DL to players who have not entered it before, then that would be very much appreciated.

Pete it appears that the future is here with the Wolves at the Gates DLC! :D

Although I didn't catch the release date, it may be a bit late for season 5.
The plans for the Themed Event will not be affected by the new DLC. See here for further discussion . . . viewtopic.php?f=501&t=91120

stockwellpete wrote: Thu Apr 25, 2019 2:11 pm I have decided to use again the concept behind the Themed Event that we had in Season 2 of the old FOG1DL. I have had to make some changes as the armies have not been exactly reproduced from FOG1 to FOG2 and a couple of the scenarios used in the KO stage then are not available now.

Firstly the four qualifying groups . . .

Group 1 "Peloponnesian War" (431-404 BC)
1. Spartan 461-281 BC
2. Greek 460-281 BC
3. Achaemenid Persian 419-329 BC
4. Syracusan 412-281 BC

Group 2 "The Wars of Alexander" (334-323 BC)
1. Indian 500 BC-319 AD
2. Macedonian 355-329 BC
3. Achaemenid Persians 419-329 BC
4. Thracian 350-251 BC

Group 3 "The Wars of Pyrrhus" (280-272 BC)
1. Roman 280-220 BC
2. Macedonian 320-261 BC
3. Pyrrhus 280-272 BC
4. Carthaginian 280-263 BC

Group 4 "Great Balkan Migration" (from 279 BC)
1. Galatians 280-63 BC
2. Macedonians 320-261 BC
3. Greeks 280-228 BC
4. Thracians 350-251 BC

For the knock-out stage, where paired games are used, we will be using 3 official scenarios that I have checked for reasonable balance . . .

Quarter-finals - Raphia 217 BC

Semi-finals - Pydna 168 BC

Final - Phillippi 42 BC

So I think this will give us a good old romp around the ancient world. Any comments are most welcome. :D
This is now confirmed as the arrangements for the Themed Event in Season 5. :D

The starting date of the Early Middle Ages section may be delayed for a short period depending on the official release date of the "Wolves at the Gate" DLC.

Tournament diary and news . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

Invitations for Season 5 will be sent out on Thursday May 16th. The tournament will open on Saturday June 1st. There is likely to be a short delay to the start of the Early Middle Ages section because the new DLC "Wolves at the Gate" is due to be released at some point in the next few weeks. Players wishing to enter the Early Middle Ages section should put your name down in the recruitment thread as usual with "armies to follow" if you are wishing to choose an army (plus allies if you want to do this). The Biblical section will be trialling larger 1600 pt armies following the poll that was held towards the end of last season.

This Themed Event thread will open on Saturday June 1st . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

Instructions

Matches in this section are played to a tighter schedule and must be prioritised above matches from other sections. Please start all your group stage matches by Sunday 9th June. They must all be completed by Saturday June 29th. The knock-out matches will be allowed 14 days for completion. Unfinished matches will be subject to adjudication.

The group stage matches are single battles, while the knockout stage of the tournament will use paired games ("mirror matches") to decide who progresses to the next round.

Either player may set up the challenge in this section. Remember to PM your opponent as well as placing the challenge and password in this thread.

The final % scores for each player are taken from the in-battle display in the top left-hand corner of the screen and not the Final Losses screen that appears after the battle has ended where losses are adjusted for wounded and deserted troops.

Reporting the result of a match is the responsibility of the winning player. However, if you are the loser in a match and notice that the result has not been posted within 24 hours please post the result yourself. This helps to keep the league tables up to date.

Where players finish with the same number of points at the end of the group stage, the points aggregate from the matches between those players will be used to decide the final places in the group table. If this does not separate the players then lots will be drawn to determine which player(s) proceed to the next stage of the competition.

Please be sure to familiarise yourself with both the Rules of Competition and the Players' Guide.

The Rules are here . . . viewtopic.php?f=501&t=80755

It may seem a trivial point but please do not report the result as 46-60. It is more helpful if everyone gets used to reporting their results in the same way to avoid any confusion, particularly when an adjudication may be necessary.

Classical Antiquity reserve places only now . . .

Post by stockwellpete »

Here is the full army list for the Classical Antiquity league section. There are over 80 armies available to choose from and, initially, players are required to choose 4 of them (from different nations, so not 3 Carthaginian armies and a Seleucid army, for example). Please post your army selections in your order of preference in this thread.

Once players have been organised into divisions of 10 based on their playing experience and ability, they will then be allocated one of their four choices. The allocation process will give preference to the lowest rated players (see FOG2DL ratings) in each division. Only very occasionally might a player be asked to make another selection at this stage.

Players will need to have both the base game and the Immortal Fire DLC to enter this section of the tournament.

Please be sure to familiarise yourself with both the Rules of Competition and the Players' Guide.

Early Middle Ages: winners post your results here

Post by stockwellpete »

Please use the following format when posting your results. Be sure to indicate which division you are playing in, which armies were involved in the battle, and the final score of the battle. It should look very much like this . . .

Division A

hidde (Romans) beat stockwellpete (Carthaginians) 60-46

It may seem a trivial point but please do not report the result as 46-60. It is more helpful if everyone gets used to reporting their results in the same way to avoid any confusion, particularly when an adjudication may be necessary.
