Division D

Darkness fell as KiFi - Macedonian 320-261 BC with Greek ally held the field against SawyerK - Roman 199-106 BC with Spanish 300-10 BC ally 53:37.

An epic heavy infantry encounter between the Macedonians and Romans on open terrain with a few low hills. Both armies maneuvered turning the enemy's right flank. This result was a slug-fest leaving both armies exhausted at the end of the day.

Good game SawyerK.

Division A

Geffalrus (Antigonids) defeats MorkinTheFree (Pontus) 49-10

Fun fact: the origins of the Kingdom of Pontus had an interesting intersection with the Antigonid Dynasty. In 302 BC, Antigonus the One-Eyed executed Mithridates II of Cius, a Persian nobleman who had ruled part of Mysian Anatolia since well before Alexander the Great invaded the Persian Empire. Most likely, Antigonus was continuing the consolidation of Anatolia as part of his contest with the other Diadochi in Thrace, Macedon, Babylon, and Egypt, and Mithridates II just got caught in the crossfire. Antigonus then became suspicious of the dead man's son........also named Mithridates. However, young Mithridates was good friends with Demetrius the Besieger, the son and heir of Antigonus. Demetrius warned Mithridates, who fled to Paphlagonia and took refuge in a mountain fortress. Distracted by the looming titanic battle of Ipsus, Antigonus let him go. In the coming years, the Antigonids would wind up being the ruling dynasty of Macedonia and the Mithridates dynasty would come to dominate Anatolia, the Pontus Euxinus, and be a even bigger obstacle to Roman domination in the region.

Anyway, the battle:

I had a hunch that Morkin would bring a better medium foot contingent and plenty of skirmishers, meaning that contesting the main rough hill would be futile. As such, I tried to march around his flank to get at less rough ground to his rear. Morkin did a good job of pressuring my skirmishers while my phalanx reoriented itself, and our light infantry set about murdering each other pretty early on. During an attempt to rout some fragged skirmishers, a pike unit pursued into range of a Pontic pike on higher ground. Luck was with me, however, as my pike and general survived the powerful charge and ended up drawing the pike unit off the hill and into range of my fresh Veteran pikes. On the far right flank, a force of elephants, lancers, and thureos engaged the Pontic cavalry and got into favorable engagements with their lancers and Cataphracts. In particular, my lancer got an amazing roll vs some Persian cavalry that decided to stand and fight, and double dropped them on the charge. The following turn saw the Antigonid lancers break the Persian cavalry and take an elephant-disrupted-lancer in the flank, with destructive results. Morkin was eventually able to get his revenge on the elpehants with some Thracians and Falxmen, but by that time, my early advantages had snowballed as my pikes and lancers outflanked his engaged infantry.

Good game as always to Morkin.

Final positions near the main hill. Fortunately for me, most of the battle took place on the flat ground just off the hill.

Division A

harveylh – Syracusan 280-211 BC with Carthaginian 235-146 BC ally defeats Snugglebunnies - Carthaginian (Hannibal in Africa) 202 BC, 63-53.

Very similar armies on a wide open battlefield. The Syracusan cavalry attacked first and did damage while their hoplites were pushing back the center, but the Carthaginian cavalry and elephants skillfully counterattacked and almost won the battle. Good game.

Weekly round-up
Geffalrus (Antigonid) has taken a firm grip on proceedings in Division A with a further 2 wins this week. With the players immediately behind him in the table running out of matches the most likely players to make a late challenge are harveylh (Syracusan) and MikeC_81 (Roman). Geffalrus still has to play MikeC_81 and the result of that match could be decisive in deciding the outcome of this division. At the bottom MorkinTheFree (Pontic) is still looking for his first points after 5 matches. Triarii (Hannibal in Italy) has also lost his first 2 matches. paulmcneil (Galatian) has moved back to the top of the table in Division B after posting his fifth win, but he has now completed all his matches. The best-placed player to take the top spot at the end of the season is herm (Roman) who has 4 straight wins from 4 starts. Morbio (also Roman) is still in a position to challenge for promotion but he suffered a setback this week when losing to bottom-placed Ulysisgrunt (Jewish) in a tight match. fikabo (Jewish) is looking the main threat to current leader edb1815 (Thracian Hellenistic) in Division C with 3 wins from 3 starts. Also likely to feature prominently is veteran batesmotel (Roman) who is unbeaten in 3 starts. At the bottom Rob123 (Roman) and MikeMarchant (Seleucid) desperately need points to move away from the relegation zone. Schweetness101 (Hannibal in Africa) suffered his first defeat of the season in Division D to emerging challenger Questar17 (Carthaginian). vakarr (Thracian) is currently in second place, having completed his fixtures with a very creditable 6 wins in his first season in the FOG2DL.

Unbeaten runs of 3 matches or more
Geffalrus (Division A) 7 matches
harveylh (Division A) 3 matches
Sennacherib (Division A) 3 matches
herm (Division B) 4 matches
batesmotel (Division C) 3 matches
edb1815 (Division C) 4 matches
fikabo (Division C) 3 matches
Karvon (Division C) 3 matches
Questar17 (Division D) 3 matches

Match completion rate (45 matches in total to be played in each division)
Division A - 29 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division B - 22 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division C - 19 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division D - 29 out of 45 matches completed :D

These are generally good match completion rates; Division A and D are excellent.

Player of the week
harveylh (Division A) with 3 wins this week. :D
