Division B

devoncop (Moorish 350AD) drew with Sunnyboy (Huns) .............0-0

The Moors being the best possible cannon fodder for Hunnic mobility and archery prowess the Moorish General decided the plentiful woodland in the SW corner of the battlefield was hugely inviting and the Huns decided such terrain was less than ideal for their horses and a draw was agreed withing a few turns.

Division C

fikabo (Polish and Vikings) beat Ulysisgrunt (Byzantne) 43-6

Similar map and battle I think to: oscarius (Rus) - Ulysisgrunt (Byzantne).
only:
On cavalry left wing I put my weak cavalry and defensive shieldwall which has to get first charges.
My best units and many archers on right side attack infantry.

I manage to delay attack on left wing (with help massed archers in rough terrain which split front + L shape of front). My very strong units in right wing win game by destroy Byzantine infantry. I also have some problem with Klibanophoroi but after routing my shieldwall, my archers disrupt it and second has to fight with two my shieldwalls (one attack from flank) so not finish till end of game.

Div B

lydianed (Samnite + Gauls) defeated Najanaja (Pontic) 60:42

What a game. Pikes and Cataphracts got off to a flying start and knocked seven bells out of the Samnite MF. Some helpful terrain and patient overlaps allowed the Samnites to get their noses back in front and work their cavalry around the back where they were able to rout the main Pontic battle line. Pontic rallies and stubborn defending took the game to turn 44. GG Najanaja.

Division D

MikeMarchant (Ancient British 60 BCE-80 CE - Allies: Roman 24-196) defeated GeneralKostas (Frankish 496-599 AD with Breton 411-579 AD) : 46/17

With a widely dispersed Frankish opponent, deploying in discrete formations, it didn't take long for the British chariots to get through their lines and behind. While the warabnd, with Roman support, slammed into the Frankish front the chariots caused mayhem in the rear.

It's really tough to defend against once the line's been penetrated, because you just don't know which way to turn.

Bad luck, General Kostas. Thanks for a good game.

Best Wishes

Mike

Divison D

rs2excelsior (Roman) defeated Questar17 (Carthaginian with Syracusan ally) 62-55

Another blood-soaked battlefield with the Romans clinging to victory by their fingertips. Once again a stream separated the opponents. Neither side's heavy infantry seemed too willing to advance at first, though the Carthaginian medium foot pressed forward against the Roman left, crossing the stream. The Roman mediums pursued, along with the main Roman battle line. The Cartaginian scutarii turned to face the Roman mediums as they pursued, and the Carthaginian hoplites moved forward and managed to catch the legionnaires before they fully crossed the stream. On the left, the Roman medium foot and cavalry succumbed to their Carthaginian counterparts after a protracted fight in the streambed and the surrounding hills. On the right, Roman infantry managed to force back the Phonecian spears, breaking their elephants in the center of the line and disordering their main body. Eventually the Carthaginian heavy foot broke, and the tattered remnants of the legions turned to meet the remaining Carthaginian forces. Many cohorts were right on the edge of the autobreak threshold, but Roman discipline won out and the legions held on long enough to edge out a victory just before dusk.

Screenshot of the final positions. The carnage on the Carthaginian side of the stream from the main battle is clearly visible.

Division D

SawyerK (Picts with Scots) defeated rs2excelsior (Byzantine) by 61 to 41.

The Picts ran for several stands of trees at the outset and withstood a toll from the archery of the Byzantine cavalry before launching into a series of attacks against disperse groups of troops that came too close to the woods. When the Picts ventured into the open they suffered greatly from the legionnaires and the heavy cavalry but managed to establish several flank attacks to bring home the win.

Division C

edb1815 (Thracian w/ Antigonid ally) defeated Tresantes (Pyrrhic) 63% - 41%

GG to my opponent well played. There was not a lot of rough terrain for the Thracian medium infantry to hide in. Relying on numbers and cavalry to out flank the line of Pyrrhic pike phalanx. IN the early going the pikes rolled on and smashed through the center of the Thracian line held my heavy infantry from the Antigonid ally. Thracian peltasts could not stand up to the pikes and routed left and right. Then the Antigonid elephant routed things were looking grim for the Thracians. The Pyrrhic advanced scattered their line and the Thracians held cavalry superiority which was crucial to the outcome. The Thracian cavalry was able to regroup and get to critical points flanking several pike units. This proved to be the difference in the end, and a massed line of Thracian skirmishers routed the Pyrrhic elephant with missile fire. (The screen shows the turn after the elephant was put to flight).

Thanks to my worthy opponent I now have the Elephant Bane steam achievement!

Div D

Challenge1 (Viking) drew with Questar17 ( Pictish) 54-43

An enjoyable game on realistic terrain for these armies. The self-belief of the Pictish warriors was incredible as they kept bouncing back and rallying, much to the frustration of the Vikings, who in the end had to settle for a draw as darkness fell........

Well played Questar!

Div B

melm(Andalusian) beat youngr(Anglo-Danish with Welsh ally) 66-40

A bloody battle. We both extended our battle array to a single solid line. I deliberately moved my unit to match the length of Anglo-Danish "shieldwall". Before the engagement one of our flanks already reached the edge of the map! Then the inevitable battleline clash happened. During the battle, two of my veteran Muslim spearmen were depleted by Viking's axes, some of my units suffered double cohesion drops. However, the pivotal time came that one unit of my veteran Muslim spearmen exploited the chance of fallback to flank attack. That split the shield wall in two and rendered me advantage.
