Weekly round-up
Things have livened up in Division A where dkalenda (Palmyran) has taken a firm grip on proceedings with 4 straight wins. Nosy_Rat (hunnic, Western) has moved into second place but 4 players are yet to post a result. In Division B a similar position exists where XLegione (Arab City) has also established a dominant position with 4 wins from his opening 4 matches. Again there are a number of players who are yet to post a result. In Division C frontrunner desertedfox (Indian) has been pegged back by a defeat against Breogan (Germanic FT) and Najanaja (Roman) is currently in second place with 2 wins from 3 starts. Division D has started very slowly where MikeMarchant (Ancient British) leads from General Kostas (Frankish) by 4 points.

Unbeaten runs of 3 matches or more
dkalenda (Division A) 4 matches
XLegione (Division B) 4 matches

Match completion rate (45 matches in total to be played in each division)
Division A - 11 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division B - 10 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division C - 12 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division D - 5 out of 45 matches completed

These are good match completion rates, Division D is slow.

Player of the week
dkalenda (Division A) with 4 wins this week. :D

Division D

rs2excelsior (Byzantine) beat Ulysisgrunt (Kingdom of Soissons) 64-47

The two armies meet on a fairly open map with a few patches of rough ground, very good ground for the Byzantine lancers. A small force of Byzantine infantry and archers held the left flank, intending to pin that wing in place long enough for the lancers to do their work, while a large force of lancers supported by horse archers swung around the right flank. The Soissons troops deployed in two ranks--their higher quality infantry (Legio Comitatensis, Auxilia Palatina, and warbands) in the front, backed by another line of Limitanei in support. A small handful of cavalry was in reserve in the rear. The Soissons left flank held back, delaying the impact of the Byzantine lancers, but were eventually outflanked perpendicular to the original line and routed. The Byzantine infantry held up better than I expected, honestly, and even managed to rout a handful of enemy units, but they failed to hold their ground long enough for the lancers to catch up. The remaining Soissons forces redeployed and did a remarkably good job of denying the Byzantine cavalry flanking charges and the battle was relatively close, within about 5%, but the cohort of armored horse archers under General Philippus Anatoluicus found an opening to flank charge a fragmented warband--and then pursued into another flank charge on another fragmented warband, and then a flank charge on a good order auxilia palatina. That pushed the Soissons army over the 60% mark and ended the battle.

A screenshot of the end of the battle. The byzantine cavalry was between the Soissons army and their original deployment area. You can see the aftermath of the early stages of the battle near where the mouse cursor is.

Good game to Ulysisgrunt, it was close right up to the end. A couple of chain routs/cavalry pursuits into flank charges really did a number on the Soissons infantry. Well played!

General Shapur - Kingdom of Soissons 461-486 AD defeats devoncop - Moorish 350-698 AD 51:20

A fun see sawing game. Pulling back against the moorish advance then a reversal chasing them all the way to the other side of the field. Went to the last turn.
Look back over the past, with its changing empires that rose and fell, and you can foresee the future, too. M.A.

Division D

MikeMarchant (Ancient British 60 BCE-80 CE - Allies: Roman 24-196) defeated phoyle3290( Lombard 568-569 AD): 62/53

This was a real slugfest that went right to the wire. The advantage seemed to swing back and forth between us, and phoyle could easily have come out with the victory instead of me, but the gods of war (or the dice, if you're less religiously inclined) answered my sacrifices more favourably than his.

Great game, phoyle, you were very unlucky in this one.

Best Wishes

Mike

Division A

Geffalrus (Byzantines) defeats youngr (Dacians) 55-18

Early one morning a Byzantine patrol of infantry and cavalry arrived at a large forest that the local magistrate swore was haunted. The cavalry rode out to investigate and found that it was infested..........with a massive horde of Dacians. Initially, the Dacians refused to leave the glade amidst the encircling woods, and shot arrows at the cavalry as they rode by. Eventually, one cavalry regiment found a large gap in the forest, and proceeded to use the hairy Dacians for target practice. Enraged, the Dacians sallied forth into the waiting lances of the Byzantine cavalry, while the rest of both armies rushed to join the fray. The Dacians were able to drag some horsemen down and carve their way through some unfortunate limitanei, but ultimately, failed a few too many cohesion rolls, allowing the Byzantine cavalry and heavy infantry to carve their way through the horde.

Good game to my opponent.

Cavalry in chaos as the Byzantine heavy foot arrives.

Division A

SnuggleBunnies (Jewish Revolt 66-135) defeats nyczar (Ancient British 60BC-80AD with Roman allies) 44-16

A stream ran between two hills. The Britons attacked, supported by Roman Auxiliary Archers, mobs of slingers, and dashing Light Chariots on both flanks. However, Jewish skirmishers and Irregular Foot fended off the chariots, and the Zealots won the day in the center, despite suffering dreadfully from missile fire.
