Achaemenid troop choices in Persian Wars

Post by Quadratus » Sun Mar 09, 2008 4:01 pm

Will the Persian list follow Herodotus recounting of them?

I am currently building an army I would like to use in FOG.

Wanted to know how I should base my Nubian and Indian archers?

Any other advice about what units will be in the Persian host at Thermopylae & Plataea is appreciated.

To some extent I think - however, some troops will essentially be "lumped in" with similar types.

I'd probably suggest LF for the Ethiopians and MF for the Indians.

Hi. EAP are my favourite army, and Herodotus is my inspiration, so I think we have much in common! Ethiopians might be listed in an option called "Caspian or similar archers". Indian foot have their own entry as medium foot, and so do Indian Chariots. Then you can find libian, pisidian or similar javelinmen as LF, and other javelinmen as MF, including thracians, paphlagonian or others. So you can easily find a place for almost any troop you want.
I´ve decided to represent the army of Platea, including theban medizing hoplites, javelinmen and cavalry, persians sparabara and, among them, "the strongest ones, placed in front of the spartans", that is, Immortals, under my own interpretation.
Assirians and caldean have also their entry: HF swordmen in the front rank supported by MF archers in the same BG.

Caliban,

I am new to the board and the FOG system.

Is there a beta list for the Persians available out right now?

Thanks for your input.

The beta-test is now over and all beta-testers signed an NDA so are not allowed to pass on the beta lists.

The EAP and LAP lists are in "Immortal Fire" which is due for release in April, so not long to wait.

Nice book guys been reading it last 4 days. Under every other set of rules I never even bothered with Prsians - that's changed now. They're looking good.

As you can see, I can´t. But I congratulate you for your choice. It´s a beautiful army. I´ve only played about six games with them, and I´m still learning how to command them. I ensure you that they´re not tough, and most of them are undrilled, which means a lot of work to do with your generals, but their cavalry is really superb, and Immortals... I love to point them while looking at my opponent and tell him: "These are Immortals". They use to get disrupted with that
As an advise from an unexperienced player, I can only say.
a) Avoid direct confrontation with enemy HF.
b) Protect your cavalry with skirmishers from enemy bows.
c) Mix wisely the thousand nations of the persian empire in order to get the army you need under your plan. You can have lots of chariots, cavalry or even hoplites, but the most important thing is a wise plan, because once you have it, you can have almost every type of BG you can imagine.
