Palmyrian army

Post by joosluc »

Has anybody some ideas about a Palmyrian Army list ? In WRG, the army consisted in a mass of bow infantry, with some light cavalry (spear or bow), a camel group and some cataphracts. I have the figures and I would like to re-use this army with FoG.
Thanks

There will be one in Legions Triumphant - your figures will be fine except I think we get rid of the camels

Still on your anti-dromedarian tirade I see. You really better be nervous if you see a pack of camels headed your way. They spit large quantities of highly gooey material!

Just for Dan I'll let on that if you take Arab allies with the Palmyran you can get camels - it's the allied list in the Parthian list in RoR.

Dan is, of course, a well know camelophile - seems to like things that spit large quantities of highly gooey material ...

Most certainly. Not sure which came first, but it is as required by my profession as it is of the beast designed by a committee. 8)

Ignoring the camel committee for now, how does this look as an 800 point Palmyran list?

Inspired commander (Odaenathus)
3 Troop commanders (Septimius Hairan, Zabda, Herodes)
2x4 Cataphracts: Heavily armoured Superior Drilled Cataphracts Lance Swordsmen
4 Regular light cavalry: Unprotected Average Drilled Light horse Bow Light spear
2x4 Volunteer light cavalry: Unprotected Superior Undrilled Light horse Bow
4 Border horse archers: Unprotected Poor Drilled Light horse Bow
2x6 Regular archers: Unprotected Average Drilled Medium foot Bow Swordsmen
6 Irregular archers: Unprotected Average Undrilled Light foot Bow
2x4 Roman legionaries: Armoured Average Drilled Heavy foot Impact foot Skilled swordsmen
2x4 Roman auxilia: Protected Average Drilled Medium foot Light spear Swordsmen
4 Roman cavalry: Armoured Average Drilled Cavalry Light spear Swordsmen

Pretty close.

I should note that the regular archers do not get swordsmen capability, only Superior leionaries get skilled swordsmen capabilty - others get swordsmen - and that there are no Poor LH in the list.

This looks a useful force! With the points saved from not having the legionaries as "skilled", dropping the border horse and losing the "swordsman" factor for the foot archers, you could add another BG, though I'm not sure what I'd choose!

I have a version of this army in 25mm and look forward to using it!

Thanks for the feedback. Those are exactly the things in the army I was most doubtful about.

Two options that occur to me are (1) to use the points saved on swordsmanship to upgrade the border horse to a 3rd BG of volunteers; or (2) to scrap the border horse and use all the resulting points to enlarge one BG of cataphracts from 4 to 6.
