Obviously the situation in North Africa claims attention, but the ending of federation with the German Tribes to the northeast has to be addressed soon.

The garrison in Carthago was unable to hold onto the city, and didn't even have the time to pillage and raze it to the ground. But Rome held onto it's small foothold in North Africa at Thabraca, and have continued to bring in troops there. Finally 3 years after losing Carthago, we have retaken it.

Meanwhile, the varying fortunes of Rome's war with Carthage has continued to undermine Rome's relations with other powers. The Galleici Tribes dissolved our confederation, and even our long-time allies the Massilians broke our federation.

The overall situation in 141 looks about the same as in 147, but the Galleici want to be more distant friends apparently. The Germans are at peace with us, but have refused free travel rights inside their realm. Rome has sent funds and officials to the isolated cities there, to forestall any pressure from the Germanic Tribes. The Senate is not ready to force things just now. As for the Iberian rebellion, it has been almost completely crushed.

Finally, peace with Carthage. And peace across the world.

How long will it last?

No sooner had the peace documents been signed and crossed the sea to Rome, than an emmissary from the Spartans arrived before the doors to the Senate - they offered Confederacy. The emmissaries waited ... and waited ... till they finally got the message ....

Rome will now have time, hopefully, to consolidate our position in North Africa, and to devote more attentions to improving our far-flung lands.

I debated whether to buy this game when reading the pre-release updates from the developers. But having read this I think I will buy this when I get home.

Regarding this AAR, then this is a fascinating read and I look forward to future updates...

Thanks. I hope you find the game as fun and interesting as I do. So many different ways to play it. I think I'll try one of the Tribal factions next time, and see how long I can last against the big powers. But there could be quite a ways to go in this Roman playthrough.

Rome remains at peace. Five years now. Among the improvements being made are:

a system of fortifications to make sure that the Carthagenians can't surprise us.

And all kinds of building going on in the cities of the Republic:

Over the last 140 years the Republic has been hit by two plagues, one that struck among the German Tribes. A few years later the plague renewed itself, this time further south among the Iberian peoples of Nearer Spain. The know-how to build better sewage systems is spreading to cities everywhere, and some are actively working on sanitation systems. It's an excellent way for an up and coming young aidile to gain attention and acclaim on his way through the Cursus Honorum, to oversee the construction of such works.

While searching for the causes of the lowering happiness among the citizenry, look at the Italian port cities. Every one with a shipyard has been drained of people and resources.

[unless I'm mistaken, that's one of the subtleties of the game - the varying effects of war and military growth, victories, defeats, proximity to borders, and so on, including the burden on the citizenry to build the forces. And in the screenshot the word is 'both,' not 'noth!']

The people want democracy! They're demanding land reform. They want more Tribunes. Italians are demanding full citizenship ... where will it end?!

The era of peace continues. Improvements to the realm continue. Rome is following a non-interventionist foreign policy. The only entanglement is with the Macedonians, with whom we have a defensive pact.

This year news arrives of what could be a potential future problem:

The Year of the Deluge! In 120, almost 15 years of peace has ended with a cataclysm of events.

The Senate questioned the alliance of the Ptolemies with the German Tribes, wondering if that was part of some future plan against Rome. Now that suspicion is confirmed.

The sneak attack by the Ptolemaic navy has sent 5 Roman fleets to the bottom of the sea. The immediate thought is of revenge, but a cascade of events after that dastardly attack gives us pause:

Revenge will come, but Rome has to plan carefully. We are now again at war also with the Carthagenians, because of their treaty obligations.

At least Galleici stood by us, and honored our pact of Brotherhood. And now Macedonia, feeling even more threatened than Rome has offered federation. Together we will prevail!

Roman forces are being mobilized out of garrison stance all over the Republic and its allied lands. New military forces are being formed, and several cities are building the infrastructure to produce Legionnaires. We have a full treasury that has been accumulating throughout the years of peace.

Four years into the war, here is the Roman strategy. Essentially we are going to crush the Ptolemys' allies, then muster a concerted attack against their heatlands in Asia, Egypt, and Libya.

Rome's strongest Legions ever are undergoing training and equipping.

The war progresses slowly. Carthage has been driven out of Spain, and Roman troops are savaging the Carthagenian mainland. It's burn and slash against that long-time foe.

However the struggle against the Germanic Tribes is difficult. One Legion and its cavalry Auxilliaries have been lost in the fight to take the German capitol. The defenses there are much stronger than we thought.

In 214 the Iberians revolted against Roman rule for the second time. And now in 213 the neighboring Celts have rebelled also. Rome drew too many garrison forces away for the fight in North Africa.

In the year 112 Rome received emmissaries from the Ptolemys, offering peace. The Senate debated, then refused, declaring that what the Ptolemys started, Rome would end.

But then the Spartans sent a messenger from Mount Parnassus, from the very Sanctuary of Apollo:

It must be said that the Oracle knows better than even the Senate, and so Rome must accept the peace, with victory.

Final note. I Really enjoyed playing this game. I'm going for a barbarian state next, or maybe a custom world. There are so many possibilities. Now I hope others will share their own AARs.
