Painting suggestions for Thracians...

Post by OhReally »

I've just cleaned a mess of Thracian with that wacky Rhom thingy, and can not find a good source for how they were dressed. Does anyone know of what type of colors they tended to used and if they fought in anything resembling a uniform color?

I would use mainly "cowmen" villagemen colours: brown (in different tones), bone or very palid yellow (instead of pure white), green. Then i would add some details in other colours for the cloaks and shields. Here you have some pics of the best painted Thracians minis I have ever seen. Their scheme of colour is very nice.

They are from wil5, who will be able to tell you more.

I had planned on going with natural/earthy tones so this gives me some ideas. Thanks.

Thracians are so much fun to paint.
I've done around 72 28mm figures. Only then did it get boring.

Each one is different. You can use plenty of flashy colours and simple line patterns on the cloaks (Zig-zags, triangles, s-squiggles, crenelations).
Think "Charlie Brown's T-shirt" in different colours with smurf hats.

If you go with the Triballians or another hill tribe, you can paint mostly animal-skin patterns. (those guys were barely able to walk on 2 legs).
If you go Getai you can paint them more like skythians, with track-suit stripes.

The thracian hats were made of fox-pelts, so keep them in "foxy" colors, if possible :D

Go to Chris Webster's Thracians online resource. He has collected many of the cloak and shield designs from crater and redware vases and bowls. They are intricate and make a Thracian force look pretty spectacular.

Chris also owns a Yahoo groups 'Thracians' so if his site does not have what you need (unlikely), try there.
