Can anyone recommend a good, moderately priced hotel near the Lisbon airport? Also, one or two good restaurants in the western Algarve?
Finally, Algarve resident Michael Pease is attempting to build a monument in Faro to Portugese fishermen who rescued downed pilots during World War II. Google portugese fishermens memorial faro to learn more. It's valid. Please consider involvement with this fascinating project.
Thanks,

As the ones who attended recall, last year we organized a guided visit to Museu Militar on Friday afternoon (although some of you may have a nicer memory of Solar do Vinho do Porto that we visited afterwards :D ).

This year, if there are enough people interested and available, we can organize a full day visit to other places of interest, like "Centro de Interpretação da Batalha de Aljubarrota" http://www.fundacao-aljubarrota.pt/?idl=2, and/or for those with an interest in the Napoleonic periodic a visit to a couple of forts that integrated the "Linhas de Torres Vedras".
Everything is possible and other suggestions are welcomed. We just need a few things to make this happen:
Availability on Friday, 6th September;
Some extra euros to cover the expenses (visits, transport, lunch);
Let us know in advance the expected number of attendees (as we need to do some booking, hire a bus, etc);
Preferences on places to visit (alternatively we can list here a few suggestions and the interested people can vote);

At this point, with some teams still in assembling mode, what we need to know is the approximate number of people interested. On your side you'd need to book your trips to arrive on Thursday, so you can enjoy a full extra day on Friday with us.

Fernando
Hello Fernando, I will be available on Friday and would very much like to go on any tour you organise my friend.

Me too - I was going to get all the GB teams thoughts en masse rather than one at a time.

Difficult question, there is a LOT to choose from, and it really depends on what you’re after.
Anyway my suggestions below.

For a gourmet level you have the Michelin stars Ocean or Vila Joya:
http://www.vilavitaparc.com/en/culinary-delights/ocean/
http://www.vilajoya.com/
both in the Albufeira area.

Regional food (mother and grandmother style…):
http://www.jardimdasoliveiras.com/
on serra da Fóia (Foia hill) in Monchique area.
Also, worthwhile the view from the top of the hill.

My personal favourite, elaborated regional food type:
http://www.eiradomel.com/
in Vila do Bispo, near Sagres and its iconic fortress, linked with Prince Henrique, the Navigator.

Apparently the Spanish team has a problem with one or more of its players, therefore we are looking for ANY person or persons that can fill in.

I'm sure there are at least 4 Spanish players attending Britcon this weekend.

Why not get Dave R or one of the other guys to have a word?

Not enough holiday or cash...and let's be honest, I never got to grips with that scoring system. :(

See you in Germany in next year?

Hi,

I have some more news regarding the guided tour on Friday, September 6th. The general idea is to bring people to a guided visit to several Forts there were part of the Lines of Torres Vedras in the morning. We'll have a nice lunch at a local restaurant and in the afternoon we'll visit the Interpretation Centre of Aljubarrota, a medieval battle against Castille, that had a major impact on the History of both countries.
Current draft agenda:
8:15 Departure from Belém (next to Museu de Marinha)
9:00 Guided tour to rooms dedicated to Linhas de Torres at Museu Leonel Trindade in Torres Vedras
9:45 15 min break with possibility to buy waters and supplies in nearby coffees
10:00 Guided tour to a number of forts (previewed 4) that were part of the Lines. The variable number will just depend on us and the time we want to use on each fort.
12:30 Lunch in Torres Vedras
14:00 Departure to Aljubarrota
15:00 Arrival and guided visit to Centro de Interpretação de Aljubarrota
17:00 Departure to Lisbon
18:00 Arrival at Belém

The calculated cost per person, to be confirmed, will be around 47 Euros, including all the costs for the activities mentioned above, assuming a group of aproximately 20 people. This value will change with the number of people efectively attending the tour, as some costs (like the bus and the guides) are fixed, regardless of number of people.
The tour is feasible with a minimum of 10 people, but then the costs would rise to aproximately 68 Euros per person.

The bus will not be able to get close to all the forts, so some short walks will be required for the visit to the forts. It's highly recommended that you bring:
Head cover
Water
Cross country shoes or trainers

At the moment some people from the US and GB team showed interest, but I'd need to have some more confirmations within a week.
Please send confirmations and questions to my private email fjas66@gmail.com.

When are the runners and riders going up?

I have been booked to give soft practice games against some of the GB2 players so need to know what armies to try for them to win against.

I'd love to do this, but given my 8 am arrival time I'll miss the bus. Is there any way to catch up? I don't want to put anyone out, but if there is a way to get in on half or three quarters of the day I'd love to do that.

BTW, I've circulated to the rest of US team A. I'm fairly sure two people will want to do this as they arrive Thursday, but I and one another get in Friday at 8 am.

Haven't you watched the Films Pete? I believe that USA single handedly beat the Germans and any other nation was co-incidental.
