This will again be a singles tournament with the best three scores from a wargame club counting for the club trophy, which is normally impressive.

There will be the offer again of a dinner together in winchester on the Saturday night. There is also a travel lodge by the cathedral now open.

An idea for next year Lynda and I thought up on the way back from Britcon
Fixed terrain.Variable amounts on the tables ,roughly equal amounts of open ,medium, closed tables
Player with initiative can move or add up to 2 pieces using the normal dice methods or remove 1
Player without initiative can move 1 piece .
When moving use 2 d6 for distance, must move the full distance if possible
Player with initiative picks side.
Allocate tables randomly after draw has been made

Balgowan will be an 800 point desert frontier themed competition .table size is sixty by forty inches.

All armies terrain choices are restricted to desert or mountains.

The Army date must be from 31 BC to 565 A.D. inclusive .

The following armies are included .

Early Armenian.

Late Republican Roman maximum 20 legionnaires including newly recruited ones.

Later Jewish .

Numidian/ Moorish

Parthian/early sassanids

Later pre-Islamic Bedouin

Ptolemaic 31 BC

Christian Nubian

Early Byzantine

African vandal

Foederate Roman

Later sassasind Persian

Dominate roman eastern and western options. As the list States legionaries and auxilia you can have more than twenty bases.

Palmyran maximum 20 bases of legionnaires.

Principate Roman maximum 20 legionnaires. Eastern and western options.

Early eastern steppe armies

Classical Indian.

Later Hindu Indian. Until 565ad.

The following additional allies are allowed as well as those lists above, if the army and time period allows it. Commagene, Arab, middle Armenian allies .any army cannot have more than twenty Roman legionnary bases. This does not include attached light foot archers, but does include lancers and marines converted to legionnaires.

Hi David - a quick question.

The LRR & Principate are limited to a max of 20 Legionaries. Any reason why that restriction has not been extended to the Dom Roms and Palmyrans?

Thanks

Good point, the Palmyran are now in line as twenty bases.

Because the dominate are not skilled sword, i didn't put them under the same restriction, but happy to discuss.

Also, any armies that faced the desert in that period which i have missed off let me know.

David

Is it 20 bases of skilled sword legionaries, or 20 bases of legionaries?
These armies have crap legionaries, legionaries converted from marines, raw recruits, etc
Shouldn't they also be specified as Eastern

I think Phil makes a good point. Just restrict it to a max of 20 Skilled Swordsmen and then you sort out the MF Lanceraii as well.

Eastern options only makes sense for the Romans if you are focussing on that desert theatre.

Belgarum will be an 800 point desert frontier themed competition .table size is sixty by forty inches.

All armies terrain choices are restricted to desert or mountains.
Is the restricted table size being used because you have limited space available?
With this restriction AND forcing people to play in mountains or desert you may as well not bother having any of the cavalry armies in the list.
So scratch these armies:
>Early Armenian.
>Numidian/ Moorish
>Parthian/early sassanids
>Later pre-Islamic Bedouin
>Christian Nubian
>Early Byzantine
>African vandal
>Later sassasind Persian

i.e. of your permitted list less than half (7/15) are actually usable.
I would have considered using one of the above armies, but not an a 60x40 table in mountains/desert.

I can't see a valid reason for using smaller tables unless the venue has a space problem.

Is it not the same challenge that a Roman army faces when trying to catch a cavalry army on a large table 72x48!! :D

Given that there won't be any of the above armies, it won't be much of a challenge at all.
I can see a lot of Roman Civil wars occurring.

That's a bit worrying isn't it? What started out as a limitation on legionaries has turned into one on skilled swordsmen. Needs sorting...

Perhaps David doesn't want his legionaries outnumbered by more than 4?

I'd like to enter this event. Can we have a final list of permitted armies/restrictions please?

I'm sure David will respond if I have this wrong but having travelled back with him from Manchester I believe I understand the restriction. But apologies if I have it wrong. The list of armies and date range are as above.

The restriction applies to 'Legionaries'. So anyone with 'Legionary or Legionaries' in the title is caught. The skilled sword bit is a red herring. EG:

LRR is easy - no more than 20 Legionaries.
Principate Roman - the restriction applies to Legionaries, Legionary Lanciarii, Legionaries armed with clubs and Marines recently converted to legionaries.
Dominate Roman there is no restriction since the main battle troops are now classified as Field army legionaries and auxilia - so all HF can be Auxilia. There are only 12 definite Legionaries in the list - those armed with clubs.

Hope that helps.

The bit that Davd does need to clarify is whether the restriction also applies to Allied Contingents. I suspect it does or should otherwise a Later Jewish list could rock up with 24 allied LRR Legionaries.

Over to you please David.
