Order of Battle: Pacific Screenshots Revealed

Post by Surtur » Mon Mar 17, 2014 5:01 pm

Today, we are proud to share some screenshots taken from the current version of the upcoming game covering the Pacific War. The screenshots feature combat in some of the most famous battles of the Pacific like Guadalcanal, the Coral Sea and Pearl Harbor.

In Order of Battle: Pacific, you will be able to take command of both the American and Japanese armed forces in a dynamic series of campaigns for supremacy in this strategic Theater of Operations. Even if historical events will set the tempo of the war, the results of the player’s actions will directly alter the final outcome of this duel between the US and Japan.

Order of Battle Pacificis set to be released Summer 2014. Get more information on the game from its official product page.

I was wondering if someone would notice

In the victorious campaign branch of the Japanese they will have access to a hand full of unique German units through the "Wunderwaffe" specialisation. This is based on the technology trading that happened between the two Axis powers, and the specific interest the Japanese had in the Tiger tank.

Nice spot with the Tiger, I was too busy salivating at all the cool islands and battleships etc....

I do like these alternate / what if scenarios in wargames though, i.e. like giving the Japanese Tigers etc.

They don't contain a lot of actual gameplay, but we've released some in-game footage sequences a short while ago to preview some of the unit animations and effects:

Rest assured, once beta testing starts there will be more than a just small tweet sent out to announce it

Everyone will be able to apply through Slitherine's usual beta testing registration system.

I assume this is a "spiritual successor" to Pacific General?

This game really looks fabulous in many ways, but in some it doesn't so here's some (hopefully) constructive criticism of appearance:

1) It's commonly-known that the BEST way to identify ships (or specific ship classes) is by their side view, silhouette profile as some have single or multiple funnels, command towers, other distinctive features, camouflage to foil subs, etc. which is why most encyclopedias and guides look like this:

Image

Most ships look too much the same from the pure top view --carriers are rectangular, nearly everything else has the same pointed stern and prow across all countries. It's POV perspective of high altitude bombers only.

Perhaps more of a 3/4 view (like the land units) could serve as a compromise?

The Yamato BB in Pac.Gen., for example (Armory e-roster), is a muuuuuch more impressive-looking and distinctive ship icon at the bottom of the screenshot here.

Image

These OoB: Pacific ships kind of look dinky too compared to the land units. The look is inconsistent between the two.

2) The ocean (though it has a realistic texture of waves) appears greenish/brownish/grey? That looks yucky! The ocean is supposed to be blue because water reflects a blue sky. And what happened to reefs and shallows? Besides visual appeal, they actually serve a purpose in restricting larger vessels (BB, CV, CA) from getting too near certain islands.

Perhaps old Pacific General was deemed too overly-colorful in comparison:

but the real world of the South Pacific is too:

Perhaps a tint of blue to deeper areas and some aqua shallows can be added? Just a suggestion. Nice work, otherwise!
