Artillery: Foote or Horse??

Postby Blathergut » Sun Oct 14, 2012 9:47 pm

Anyone have particular preferences for artillery and why?

I've come to like my Army of Italy 1809 for several reasons:

-Italian Guard infantry :)
-Italian shock Guard cavalry :D
-Italian horse artillery :P
-veteran French horse artillery 8)

The problem with the foot artillery has been, if attacking, it takes the first turn to move to just outside of medium range (with a double move). Then it takes the next turn (after the defender's turn) to unlimber it.

But the horse artillery, ah! Move up to just outside of 6, then unlimber with second move. Then prolong into medium range!

You can do this with foot artillery too, you know.

Except, with foot arty, it takes until your third turn to be able to prolong into medium range. With horse arty, you can do it by your second turn (if you manage to pull off the second move in your first turn).

Has to do with the speed of horse artillery versus foot artillery when limbered. I have used it in the past myself and it can just boogey across the table at the speed of light, until it unlimbers that is...

Use the road for the foot artillery then.

That'll work! (Now, if I can just get multiple roads in the right spots! Pesky Austrians tend to place them parallel to back edges or at angles!)

Don't rely on your opponent's dodgy roads.
Take one yourself as a terrain selection. You can generally find a way to ribbon it straight across the table to use as an artillery highway...

Problem always occurs when it comes to those blasted buildings that don't have an Austrian road attached  then they get a French road, whether it comes in handy or not :P

I have used horse artillery once to good effect, but generally i find it buys about one turn more of fire and that isn't much. So i would not eagerly go buying horse artillery without a plan which include flank marches and cavalry dvisions sweeping forward.

Now veteran artillery that is some good stuff.
