Cost of Guard Artillery

Postby hazelbark » Sun Dec 23, 2012 8:44 pm

I wonder if guard artillery should not cost additional points?

Or optionally allow any player to bring guard artillery w/o the guard rating and pay the lower points.

Guard artillery is usually VERY expensive often being superior veteran, so adding guard basically says Guard artillery is worth two battery of line artillery. That seems a bit muchto me.

Now I realize that this may encourage more guards, which is something to be cautious of. But at the end of the day guard's are expensive and easily outnumbered in an equal points game.

I find guard anything too expensive to use when fighting Austrians...French are just so horribly outnumbered it won't matter how good your units are. The best so far has been the average drilled Italian Guard in 1809.

My view is that the additional 4 points for guardiness is great value for mounted, ok-ish for infantry and artillery.

The chief benefit of being Guard is that while steady you cannot be broken in hand-to-hand combat. You will often inflict 2 cohesion drops on an opponent while only taking 1 in return. Average Drilled Guard Cavalry are the 'super troopers' of FoGN in my view - Neapolitan or French Guard light cavalry at 12 points a base which (while steady) cannot be broken in combat, and need 6 hits just to become wavered!

For Guard heavy/horse artillery it is not really +4 for Guard that is the killer for these troops however, it is the +7 for being Superior. I am constantly trolling the French Guard lists in order to avoid or minimise the need to buy superior veteran guard heavy/horse artillery - these bases are horrendously expensive.

Cheers

Yep. That is the problem. There is no way that 1 guard artillery is worth 2 non-guard artillery units in game terms.
