like the game design and idea but two issues

Post by alaric318 » Wed May 13, 2009 5:24 am

greetings, well, this game is the perfect example how should be the development of turn based strategy to survive in the market as a genre, playing all night long and enjoy it very much, the management options, for troop recruit and/or upgrade, defensive system allocations and the tactics at hand to defeat tactically and strategically an enemy are all great features for simulation and management game, i played boardgames for some 20 years now and enjoy them very much, this design can be under a point of view of some of the greatest market hits on the boardgame market recently, thanks for this very good game, now with the issues, only what displeased me, added in to have to say it in this post is that it seems there are not capability to load a multiplayer game, this is minor issue, most of nowadays games do not have load feature for multiplayer, but the other issue is more painfull, it is to not have hotseat option, i usually play with two to four friends on hotseat and this game will shine at it, you can finish even more than one single game on one night, feature not given in most war/strategy games on the market, i do not know how difficult will be to implement a hotseat feature or if it is planned for patches upcoming but only want to give it here for the development team to know,

thanks again for another great strategy war game design,

with best regards,

alarick.

Well, firstly thank you for buying the game, and thank you for all of the praise you've given here.

Load/save in multiplayer - we decided against this since it would require a lot of work for a very small feature - if single games lasted longer, we would have included this feature, but a game is generally quite short. This isn't too likely to appear in a patch

Hotseat - This would also be a lot of work, but in this case it might be worth it - certainly it's something we'll look into, although at this point i can't promise anything. As a side note - it is possible to run multiple copies of the game on a single computer (not that i would recommend this approach - performance would be questionable at best and it was never intended to be used in this way) and have one of them host and the rest connect to "127.0.0.1".

The one other potential "feature" which I couldn't find any way to do last evening would be to allow the player to pick a different slot in the turn order, other than first, in order to reduce that "first move advantage". After beating the hardest level of difficulty in a couple of Skirmish games (it's no piece of cake, though), I tried to set the first slot to AI control, which it would not let me do. Apparently, the first faction must be a human player, or else I'm missing something.

For something as "basic" as this game appears on the surface, it's pretty impressive. I'm still discovering "features", like the ability to change the colors of the different factions by clicking on their colored dots in the scenario setup screen.

As it happens you almost found the feature you were looking for - when you click on the coloured dot to change player colours, there are 2 buttons, one marked "+" and one marked "-" - these allow you to change your starting position - so if you set yourself to 2 and an AI player to 1 then the AI will get to play first. Just make sure that you don't have 2 players with the same number or the game won't start.

I will try this hot seat work around tonight, thanks!

Thanks for the tip about changing your spot in the turn order, it makes a big difference in the situation you're faced with on turn one.

I tested it out last evening with a brief game at the default difficulty on a relatively small map. The only oddity about it was that when I took 80% of the map, a message box appeared, telling me that I was "defeated". Apparently, the victory message is still formulated for the first faction in the turn order, not for whatever spot the human player happens to be at. Oh well, at least *I* know that I won.

Hmm.. it's supposed to be for the human player...

Well, thanks for reporting it anyway.
