ROUND 21: THE SWORD OF ALLAH

Seemingly out of nowhere, the 7th century saw the birth of a vast empire. The energy and belligerence of the desert tribes of Arabia, united by Islam, were channelled into wars of conquests of astonishing speed and efficiency, much of it due to superior military leadership, especially that of Khalid ibn al-Walid, ’the sword of Allah’.

AQRABA 632
The death of the prophet Mohamed sparked the ‘Apostasy wars’ when many tribes that had submitted to his leadership revolted and put forth their own prophet. The largest and most dangerous of these were the Banu Hanifa. To bring them back under control, the new Rashidun caliph called upon Khalid ibn al-Walid. On the plains of Aqraba, the two armies clashed, famously along a gully and culminating in a last stand in a walled garden.

YARMOUK RIVER 636
With the Arabian tribes firmly under control, the Rashidun caliphate turned northwards against the once mighty Roman and Sasanian empires. After fighting against the Sasanians in Iraq, Khalid ibn al-Walid was sent to the Syrian front against the Romans. The aging emperor Heraclius, who less than ten years earlier, had defeated the Sasanians in a titanic struggle, had cobbled together a large army but could no longer lead. The confrontation came near the Yarmouk river and it was to be decisive.

Result in for Taginae, a draw...or a points win for me...one of the 2:-)

Romans (me) 30/40 Goths 31/34 (Londo)

We managed to get full value for our money in this one, Londos last few Gothic HC holding out till the end of the 12th turn.....one more and they might have gone....but we'll never know:-)
Well played Londo!

Solachon
Londo (Romans) 70/80 - Fogman (Persians) 83/80

Taginae
Londo (Romans) 32/40 - Ian (Ostrogoths) 37/34

When I first looked at Taginae, I was surprised by the strength of the Roman archery markers - superior armoured cavalry! But then I read up a bit about the battle, and I understand - there were thousands of archers firing away at the Goth horsemen as they advanced. Kind of a "Charge of the Light Brigade" situation; the Goths never really had a chance. These must surely be the toughest markers in any Fogman scenario?

There have been tougher markers to prevent people from going their direction. but those are probably the toughest you have to attack frontally.

We will start the next round by next weekend. Have a look at the scenarios by playing solo. Huskie you’re still in?

Yarmouk River - thanks for the game Huskie!

Londo (Arabs) 59/67 - Huskie (Romans) 93/92

Fogman, a question about Arab infantry. In the standard game, they're almost all identical "Warrior" HF spearmen. However in your scenarios, there are two types - protected HF def spear, and unprotected MF with LS. Are they basically the same tribesmen, just some in looser order? Or were there two distinct types of infantry fighting in different ways, with different kit?

Long overdue battle result report.
allendeuce as the Romans at Yarmouk River, vs. huskie;

Early Muslim armies were tribal in nature and structure. Every male tribesman was a fighter. Therefore there was a large range of fighting capabilities. You could say the MF were the younger, poorer tribesmen. Alternatively, they could be the same men fighting in more open order, gaining in mobility to the detriment of combat effectiveness.

Just finished working on the scenarios for July-August. Islamic armies fighting at the two edges of their empire: Spain (Guadalate River 711) and Central Asia (Talas River 751). Two very different types of battles recounting the fall of another barbarian successor state (as the Visigoths disappeared following the Ostrogoths and the Vandals) for the former and exciting Tang Chinese-Arab clash with Turks thrown in for the latter.
