Re: LORDS OF HISTORY (the ultimate edition)
ROUND 22: LAST CHARGE OF THE ARABS
After the destruction of the Sasanians and the reduction of the Roman empire 634-654, the Arabic expansion paused due to the first civil war that saw the establishment of the Umayyad dynasty to the detriment of the family of the prophet. It resumed by the end of the century with the conquest of North Africa. Wisigothic Spain was next and the Pyrenees soon became the Westernmost edge of Islam. In the East, resistance was stiffer and Khurasan was only controlled thanks to a large influx of Arabian tribesmen. Beyond the Oxus, the Umayyads had to contend with the settled Sogdian principalities, the nomadic Turks and the influence of the Tang Chinese. Victory over the Tangs at Talas 751 marked the final victory of Arabian expansion. By then, the Ummayads had fallen and the empire that was run by Arabs for Arabs were replaced by the rule of the Abbasids that blended all Muslims into one community as the converts assumed the leadership of Islam.
GUADALATE RIVER 711
After being driven out of Southern Gaul in the early 6th century by the Franks, the Goths had retreated to Spain. Bound by natural limits, untroubled by external threats, the Goths, unlike the Franks, became a largely demilitarized society, finally to be conquered. The end came at the Guadalate river in a battle as decisive as Hastings 350 years later. On that day, king Roderic, who had usurped the throne, could not command the loyalty of his nobles, with one wing leaving the field and the other other unwilling to commit until they themselves were caught up in the ensuing disaster.
TALAS 751
Central Asia was in the sphere of influence of both the Tang and the Umayyad empires. Due to the vast distances involved, conflict was mostly averted until 751 when aggressive Tang activity upsets the balance and stirred the Arabs into action. The third power of the region, the Karluk Turks were nominally allied to the Tangs but on the day they were not and that proved to be the deciding factor.

Re: LORDS OF HISTORY (the ultimate edition)
Yarmouk River - thanks for the game Jim!
Londo (Romans) 67/92 - allendeuce (Arabs) 67/67
Roman victory was largely due to their cavalry wing, which recovered from the initial shock of the Rashidun cavalry charge, and came back to inflict heavy casualties on Khalid's boys.
Fogman, I noticed that this scenario is quite different from your earlier Yarmuk. Am I correct in thinking that the recent scenario represents the final, decisive day of the battle, whereas the earlier Yarmuk covers one of the previous days?

Re: LORDS OF HISTORY (the ultimate edition)
Yes. The earlier scenario was a bit convoluted.

Aqraba
Londo (Banu Hanifa) 69/88 - Ian (Rashidun) 73/70
The Rashidun took heavy losses in the fighting for the gully. The game ended just as their assault on the walled garden was getting underway. Thanks Ian!

4 results to report:
Aqraba
Rashidun (Edmund) 50/70 vs Banu Hanifa (allendeuce) 95/88
Edmund 10.8
allendeuce 7.1
I think Rashidun is supposed to win on the left while the fight for the gully ends as a draw. Here the gully went Rashidun's way, which made a critical difference. Thanks for the game Jim.
Yarmouk River
Rashidun (Edmund) 40/67 vs Romans (mcfcivo) 96/92
Edmund 10.4
mcfcivo 6.0
The Roman cavalry and the Roman centre broke, while things were even on the other flank. Thank you for the game Andy.
Yarmouk River
Romans (Edmund) 78/92 vs Rashidun (iandavidsmith) 67/67
Edmund 10.0
iandavidsmith 8.5
A close game, where the Roman cavalry and centre hung around just long enough to scramble the points, despite higher losses. Thanks for the game Ian, close one!
Aqraba
Rashidun (Edmund) 67/88 vs Banu Hanifa (fogman) 71/70
Edmund 10.1
fogman 7.6
The fight for the gully ended as a draw, so the extra 18 break points gave Banu a points victory despite losing on the other flank. Thanks for the game fogman and for all the work that goes into these scenarios.

Re: LORDS OF HISTORY (the ultimate edition)
2 old results I think I may have missed- apologies fro either being too slow or for reporting twice:
Taginae
Romans (Edmund) 36/40 vs Ostrogoths (allendeuce) 34/34
Edmund 10.0
allendeuce 9.0
Really close game that could have gone either way. Thanks for the game Jim.
Solachon
Sasanians (Edmund) 55/80 vs Romans (mcfcivo) 88/80
Edmund 11.0
mcfcivo 6.9
The Roman left flank broke through the Persian right. But a Persian holding force held them off long enough for the Persians to win it in the centre. Thanks for the game Andy, sorry it took me so long to report.

Re: LORDS OF HISTORY (the ultimate edition)
Battle result:
Talas
Tang (Edmund) 51/73 vs Abbasids (allendeuce) 75/73
Edmund 10.3
allendeuce 7.0
The Tang cavalry vaporised just slowly enough for reinforcements to arrive and stabilise things, whilst the Abbasids struggled to make much of a breakthrough with their infantry. Meanwhile the fleeing troops continued to rack up points very efficiently for the Tang.
Thanks for the game, as always, Jim.
