In my previous post about the battle of Bedriacum, Paul V. informed me my math was off. The math is that 83/80 is 1.0375, so I should have given myself 10.4 points instead.

Round 11: THE LIMITS OF EMPIRE

A special 3 battle round for the new year.

Roman offensives into Caledonia and Dacia represented the last attempts to conquer and hold territories. In the long run both failed: the Caledonians were never subdued and Dacia was abandoned in 275. Hadrian’s wall and the fortifications of the Rhine, Danube and Euphrates frontiers were expression of the limits of Roman imperialism, psychologically and physically. Furthermore, the political instability brought about by the assassination of Commodus in 192 proved to be a permanent feature in the coming generations, and crippled Rome in the great crisis of the 3rd century.

---------------------------------
MONS GRAUPIUS 83 AD

Agricola, the governor of Britain, launched the invasion of Caledonia with 3 legions and numerous support troops. The native gathered to oppose him at Mons Graupius under the leadership of Calgacus.

ADAMCLISI 102 AD

Trajan marched into Dacia in 101. The Dacians under Decebalus had been a thorn on the Danube frontier. They and their allies had been responsible for the destruction of two legions (V Alaudae and XXI Rapax, of Vitellian memory...). As the Romans paused during the winter 101/102, Decebalus went on the offensive and crossed the Danube into Moesia. Trajan tracked him down and brought him to battle at Adamclisi.

ISSUS 194

In the civil war that followed the assassination of Commodus, the empire was split between three contenders: Clodius Albinus in Britain, Septimius Severus on the Danube and Pescennius Niger in Syria. After gaining control of Rome and coming to an agreement with Albinus, Severus marched against Niger. At Issus, site of Alexander’s triumph, his commander Anullinus found Niger in a strong defensive position.

Hi all. Would be interested in playing although once more unable to download and install scenarios. So would have to accept challenges from players for both games so I can check out terrain, armies etc. Scenarios have never been a good thing for me. Anyways if I can join in next one please would be much appreciated. If anybody is thinking of forming a league then I would also be interested. Cheers.

Hi Eric, i posted a paired games for Adamclisi, (pw: eric) so you can have an idea of the sort of battles we’re playing in the group. I want to make sure you’re comfortable with them because they are not what you normally play, i.e. no fog of war, no double moves, no light troops (abstracted), very little maneuvering. The action follows historical patterns and the role of the players is to maximize close fighting and how to handle reserves. Once you still want to proceed (and it’s a long run since we’re moving up to 1515 and we’re only in the 2nd century...), I will have to find another player since the format requires an even number.

again, adamclisi, pw: eric

IMPORTANT: I HAVE WORKED ERIC INTO THE COMPETITION CHALLENGE TABLE. SEE EDITED CHALLENGES FROM 9 JANUARY. IF YOU HAVE STARTED ANY GAME (I HAVEN’T SEEN ANY POSTED), THEY ARE VOID FOR TOURNAMENT PURPOSES.

Welcome to Eric!

We've been a bunch of little monkeys playing in the sandpit, and now King Kong has turned up! For those who weren't into FOG a few years ago, Eric was a terror in competitive leagues and tournaments. I used to shudder whenever I was scheduled against him, and yet I learned a great deal while I was getting beaten (over and over).

Fogman, here's my final result for your table posted on the previous page. Will those games still count, or are campaign scores being started afresh now?
