Field of Glory AAR on sugarfreegamer.com
I'm just launching a series of articles based on a Field of Glory game centered around the Battle of Tunis scenario.
I'm a woefully inadequate FoG player, so I enlisted some help from another player, and he's coaching me through the scenario, and hopefully I'll learn the complexities and subtleties of the game. Fingers crossed it will make interesting reading, and will perhaps show other newcomers to the game the general do's and don'ts of how to play.
You can see the initial setup post here:

The first turn is detailed here:

Very interesting. The Legions are extremely tough. They can take on almost anything frontally. I'd have kept them more central. You would lose some to elephants but unless he committed to supporting them you should have won through by numbers. If he did support them you should be able to take the supports down in a head on fight.

Or if your unlucky like me all the elephants crash into Romans on one turn and disrupt, then by the next turn all but one have routed off....the glass battle line. Was not a pretty sight and it just kept getting worse from there, at least most of my routing troops can outrun the Romans and I did get some rallies but it was not enough to save the sinking ship

An interesting insight into the game. I think this is great for someone who doesn't know about FoG and wants a brief introduction about what the game offers and the basic tactics one might use.
One comment on what I believe is a mistake in the written text. As the Roman commander, you wrote (Turn 3): "On my left flank, my Commander Xanthippus and his weak troops are about to attack the Carthaginian Commander". I believe Xanthippus is the Carthaginian General

Ah Morbio, thanks for spotting that mistake, apologies to the historians amongst us, I'll fix it ASAP - I've been knocking out these AAR reports so fast I may have messed up some of the fine detail.
Another point raised was that the Light Infantry and Light Horse units don't provide any morale/cohesion support when they're placed directly behind the line of Elephants - is this the case? I assumed all unit types provide support, but would like to check that fact.

Thanks for the exposure Iain, much appreciated. I've put in some time and effort to these AAR's so I've been pimping them wherever I could really, I hope it helps bring the tentative newcomers into the FoG/Slitherine Community. Sort of sticking my hand up and declaring that not all of us who play FoG are accomplished and deeply competitive grognards

Only non-skirmishers, e.g. non LF and LH, provide the rear support bonus for Cohesion Tests. This is described in the help.spelk wrote:Ah Morbio, thanks for spotting that mistake, apologies to the historians amongst us, I'll fix it ASAP - I've been knocking out these AAR reports so fast I may have messed up some of the fine detail.

Iain, just to let you know, I've started a new AAR with Troy Goodfellow from the Flashofsteel.com (and Three Moves Ahead strategy gaming podcast). The battle is Cynoscephalae and once again I'm attempting to rather amateurly lead a Roman army against a strategy guru commanding a horde of Macedonians.iainmcneil wrote:Thansk Spelk - very interesting. I have linked to the articles from our news section. Let me know if you do any more.

Nice new look to the Slitherine website, by the way.
