I would like to congratulate Tiavals for an excellent game he has taught me something about the game. Besides the tactics but also picking a more superior trained force next time. It certainly makes a difference when you play against a more experienced opponent as ive discovered. I hope all the best of luck to him. But it hasnt put me off for any future tournaments you might put on in the future, thanks for excepting me this time.

That's OK, Leonidas. Keep practising - and you will be very welcome to join us again next time.Leonidas048 wrote:I would like to congratulate Tiavals for an excellent game he has taught me something about the game. We have just three matches to complete in the first round. They are . . .
5. deeter (Graeco-Bactrians) v TJD (Dacians)
7. petran 1978 (Alexandrian Macedonians) v ericdoman1 (Catalan Company, early)
9. zumHeuriger (Early Byzantines) v jonno (Gallic Hill Tribes, later)
Can one player from each of these matches give me a very brief progress report please? I know that Eric has been away for a few days at a TT competition, but I just need to know that all these games have started - and that they are still moving (that is, no-one has "disappeared"). The deadline for completion is next Sunday so there is still plenty of time to finish them off.
The second round draw will be made available tomorrow morning.

The match with deeter is still in the early stage. At this rate we're not likely to finish by the deadline, especially as I'm probably going to be unavailable later in the week. Rather than hold up the match from proceeding to the next round I'm willing to dump the game. Advise.stockwellpete wrote:We have just three matches to complete in the first round. They are . . .

Progress
Hi Pete
We are on turn 3 nothing in it really. In the next turn or two I reckon the score will be something like I have had 6 bp losses and petran will have possibly lost the same amount.
Cheers
Eric

Thanks for your prompt reply, Tim. I have a number of questions . . .TJD wrote: The match with deeter is still in the early stage. i) Has there been a particular reason for the slow play in your game?
ii) Which turn are you actually on?
iii) What is the current score in terms of break points lost?
iv) Which will be the first day that you are going to be unavailable to play? When will you be back?
Depending on your answers to these questions, perhaps I could contact deeter and see if things can be speeded up over the next few days. I don't really want to adjudicate against anyone and I need to identify who has been more responsible for the non-completion of the match. If both players have been equally responsible or equally blameless (life gets in the way of FOG sometimes ) then I will toss a coin here to decide who goes through.
Deeter, what do you say, please?

OK, Eric - as long as the game is moving then that is fine.ericdoman1 wrote:Hi Pete

I think we're on turn 5 or 6 now, and the losses are light, like 4 or 5 on each side, even for now but given Deeter's skill unlikely to stay that way for long. As for why the game is slow, we were delayed by our decision to restart: we initially had a map that was certain to result in a draw. But that was a while ago. As for my schedule, it's in flux but it really might be best to drop the match.stockwellpete wrote:Thanks for your prompt reply, Tim. Tim, from what you are saying to me, you are actually playing a replay, and it sounds like neither of you is to blame for slow play. I can extend the deadline for you both in these circumstances if you want me to (I said that I would for replays). The only problem that I can see is if you are going to be unavailable in the slightly longer term then really I would have to award the game to deeter, so that the completion of the second round is not substantially delayed.TJD wrote:I think we're on turn 5 or 6 now, and the losses are light, like 4 or 5 on each side, even for now but given Deeter's skill unlikely to stay that way for long. So - if you do wish to resign, can you just say that in your next post and then I will contact deeter to let him know. Thanks for being so reasonable about this, Tim.
Well, the decision to replay was made almost immediately and little time was lost there, and for whatever reason deeter's returns since have not been particulary prompt but I'm not interested in locating blame here It's not that important. So do please give him the bye here, and all's well.stockwellpete wrote:Tim, from what you are saying to me, you are actually playing a replay, and it sounds like neither of you is to blame for slow play. Anders (hidde) has now kindly agreed that this competition will be represented on his "Table of Honour" in the "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" forum - so your swashbuckling exploits will now be saved for posterity.

Deeter, I got your move a few minutes ago, and just so that we don't drive Peter crazy here, I've gone ahead and resigned that game so that's there no ambiguity. Good luck in the next round!deeter wrote:I've just sent in my move for Turn 5 vs. TJM. As Tim said, we restarted the game once it was clear it would be a draw. I have been a little slow since then so we are just now getting to grips. I would happily finish the game in or out of the tournament setting.
Deeter

Hi Pete -
Quyick update we are on Turn 8 - I think I'm up like 3-0 in BP's. Its HF / Mounted Lance, Shooty horse vs MF Impact foot - he is holed up in some woods. I have a plan (maybe to get at him / force him out)
Well see how it goes and may another update tomorrow.
Tom
PS - If it comes down to a coin flip give Jonno the edge - between work and illness I've proabbly been the slower player.
PPS - A way to let a third party check out games to help adjudicate would be nice (a referee function as it were). Also to allow on the fly editing of matches (for events, reinforcements, etc.)

Thanks for the update, Tom. You have still got until Sunday so that is quite a bit of time. If you are getting right near the end by then I will give you a couple of extra days as you have been ill. It just means that the winner of your game will then need to start your second round match more or less straight away in order to catch up with the other players. I don't want to adjudicate matches unless i really have to. A referee function would be fun - perhaps the ref could call out things like "get a move on!"zumHeuriger wrote:Hi Pete -

Just a brief explanation about how I have drawn the matches for this competition. I think there are two basic ways of doing it . . .
i) the first way is to do just one draw and enter the all names on a grid. So, for the first round, you would have match 1 at the top, match 2 would be the next one down . . . and so on - and finally you would end up with match 16 at the bottom. Then, in the second round, the winner of match 1 would play the winner of match 2, the winner of match 3 would play the winner of match 4 and so on.
ii) the second way to do it, and it is the way that I have chosen to do this competition, is to do separate draws for each round of the competition. I actually did the draws for each round all at the same time, using 32 counters for the first round draw, 16 for the second round draw . . . ending up with just 4 counters for the semi-final draw.
The other variation that could be used with both methods above is to "seed" the top 4 or top 8 players (maye using the LOEG ratings) so that the top players only would meet each other in the quarter or semi-finals, provided that they were not knocked out before then. This is the system that the major tennis tournaments use. I haven't done it this way for this competition though - everybody has had the same chance of meeting everybody else as the draw has been completely random, a bit like the FA Cup draw in England.
One other variation that I am just going to introduce for the quarter-final stage (just to see if people like it) is to enter the names of second round winners into the grid for the quarter-final draw as soon as the result is posted on here. The purpose of this will be twofold - firstly, players will be able to see the draw for the next round gradually take shape and secondly, players will be able to arrange matches in the next round more easily to suit their own schedule.
I would be interested to hear any other thoughts about this aspect of the competition.
