Yes, doing a "run away" with the whole southern front might set up the Russians for a 'backhand' come spring.
We sleep peaceably in our beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on our behalf.

Turn 61. December 14, 1942.

Eastern front. Nothing happening in last Allies turn (mud weather). Axis forces made lots of redeployments in order to face the upcoming Winter campaign. Luftwafe much increased its presence in central Russia. Furthermore, several units built will be railed to the Eastern front soon. Shots below are at the end of Axis turn.

Med. In last Allies turn Australians entered Benghazi whilst attacks over Tobruk continued. Italian corps in the city-fortress is holding rather well.

Severe Winter started at the end of Axis turn.

Cybvep wrote:IMO by using so many Italian and Romanian units to cover the southern front in the East you are asking for trouble. The Soviets will tear them apart.
Romanians helped by Donets river and double defensive line, already did well in last 41-42 Soviet winter offensive which achieved nothing there. This time, probably Soviet push will be harder but there will be more units available: Romanian extra corps units will soon be railed to Rostov.

It depends.

Image

Eastern front Axis turn. As Kursk defender unit (Italian corps) was much weakened because of the Soviet attack, an Italian mech swapped positions with it. Swapping move also in Rostov.

Med. In last Allies turn, Tripoli was first attacked, unit defending the city resulting much damaged. Tobruk was attacked again but holding for now:

Med. In last Allies turn, both Tripoli and Tobruk were taken. Axis defensive preparations in Sardinia, Sicily and mainland Italy almost finished:

Turn 64. February 12, 1943.

Eastern front last Allies turn. A panzerkorps was destroyed north of Kursk due to Red Army attacks. Soviets also destroyed another Italian corps 2xS of Kursk and a Romanian corps 1xN of Rostov. Many other Axis units were attacked as the German corps defending Orel. In Northern front, Soviet attacks that have been slight so far, much intensified which resulted in 1 German unit (corps) killed NW of Kalinin and 2 more damaged in Moscow front:

Kalinin-Moscow front

Kursk-Donets front
Image

Eastern front Axis turn. Another powerful Wehrmacht counterattack with heavy air support destroyed Soviet armoured 1xNE of Kursk. Furthermore, Soviet armoured unit in the city itself was also heavily attacked and halved in strength and became a Guards unit. Only repairing of units in other sectors.

Med last Allies turn. Allied Med fleet started to bomb Italian army positions in Sicily. Let's see how this continues but Torch could be skipped:

Turn 65. March 4, 1943.

Eastern front last Allies turn. Red Army destroyed 2 German corps S of Orel. 2xS of Kursk an Italian corps was killed aswell.at 7 steps that last turn covered offensive action by german mechs, was killed either. In Northern front, 2 German corps were attacked, one of them being forced to retreat:

Northern front
Image

Orel-Kursk front
Image

Eastern front Axis turn. Wehrmacht aimed at retaking Kursk this turn and succeeded. Furthermore, a Soviet mech 2xS of that city was destroyed either. Strong Luftwaffe support to German counterattacks is accounting for much of the success got so far. Air combats favoured again German fighters:

Image

Med last Allies turn. Heavy air and naval bombardments over Italian defending units in Sicily continued:

Image

Med Axis turn. Italian navy reappeared. First, an Italian DD bumped into British sub. Second, Italian sub harassed RN CV. Air combats are favouring Allies (RAF) in this scenario due to slightly better tech tan Luftwaffe ones (Malta fighter won 3:1 this turn):

Image

Atlantic. A German sub spotted a large Allied fleet W of Ireland. Lately, Kriegsmarine surface units have been helping subs in attacking convoys. This way 2 turns ago, a Central convoy(89) was entirely sunk due to combined action of BB's and subs. Now that has been spotted this strong Allied fleet, BB's are seeking the safety of French ports so they are headed there again. With some luck, they won't be spotted:

Turn 66. March 24, 1943.

Eastern front last Allies turn. Red Army stays on the offensive in Kursk front. A panzerkorps and a SS mech were destroyed Furthermore, 2xN of Kursk a German corps was left badly depleted:

Image

Eastern front Axis front. More Wehrmacht effective counterattacks. 2xS of Kursk a Guards unit (mech) was destroyed. And N of that city a Soviet corps was attacked and destroyed either. Luftwaffe, very active again, still had a shot on a halved Soviet armoured 1xNE of Kursk, that became Guards after the air attack:

Image

Med last Allies turn. An Allied landing fleet appeared on the southern coasts of Sicily. Attacks on Italian sub. As expected, Italian DD was sunk:

Image

Med Axis turn. Reggia Aeronautica and Luftwaffe bombed 1 of the Allied transports halvin it. More attacks on British CV:

Image

Atlantic. Allies did spotted German BB's withdrawing to French ports and ambushed them:

Image

As you can see in the shot, 1 of the BB's was torpedoed by RN sub but worst was for the German DD that was halved in strength. In Axis turn, naval ZOC exerted by US DD's kept BB's from reaching French ports so they attacked instead sinking DD 2xNW of La Coruna. Sinking of the Allied unit allowed German DD to sail to French port for repairings. Although, German subs made some attacks to RN BB's aiming at softening them a little, it's unlikely that Kriegsmarine BB's will survive.

Turn 67. April 13, 1943.

We start in the Med this time. Landings in Sicily commencedn came ashore destroying the defending Italian garrison. Apparently, a landings operation is to be made in Calabria either:

Image

Med Axis turn. Failed Reggia Aeronautica air strike on UK LST in Calabria. Railing of units to Italian peninsula as reinforcements are much needed now:

Image

Eastern front. Weather turned to normal winter this turn. No offensive action at all from Soviets. As the initial Red Army gains around Kursk were lost to the powerful Wehrmacht counterattacks, bridghead in the Donets near Rostov could be considered as the only Soviet Union success for this last Winter campaign. Shots below are at the end of this Axis turn:

Image
Image

Atlantic. As expected, German BB's were crushed by Allied navy, resulting in one sunk and the other one surviving at 2 steps. Since depleted German BB could not move, she attacked instead targeting RN BB. In the end, in cooperation with couple of German subs, a RN BB ended depleted:

Turn 68. May 3, 1943.

Eastern front last Allies turn (Winter weather). Red Army attacked a Finnish corps in the marshes, W of Cherepovets. Axis unit was forced to retreat:

Image

Eastern front Axis turn. Strong build up of Wehrmacht units in Kursk. Besides, a powerful and experienced Luftwaffe air fleet is being upgraded and brought to full readiness. Maybe now it's the right time to attack!:

Image

Med last Allies turn. Brits landed in Calabria cutting Sicily from main supply. In Sicily, Italians are defending well for now and so a garrison held a heavy Allied attack:

Image

Med Axis turn. More ineffective Axis forces air strikes:

Turn 69. May 23, 1943.

Eastern front last Allies turn. No Soviet attacks at all. Red Army is bringing considerable reserves to Voronezh, to be used against possible gaps forming in the front line in Orel-Kursk, in case of an Axis offensive:

Image
Image

Eastern front Axis turn. Some bombings by Luftwaffe but not offensive at land. Germans need a little bit more readiness but seeing how Soviets are reinforcing their army, I don't know if good or bad to wait...

Med last Allies turn. Allied naval forces split in 2 groups and so, one of the naval groups intend to launch a landing operation in Sardinia. In Calabria, landings were consolidated by killing an Italian garrison. In Sicily, Italian defending units holding really well:

Image

Med Axis turn. Italian subs keep on doing some harassments to Allied navy here an there. At land, Axis forces are determined to stop the Allies at the rough Calabria terrain:

Turn 70. June 12, 1943.

Eastern front last Allies turn. Soviets continue with their spotted build up in the Don.

Eastern front Axis turn. Luftwaffe is being brought to full strength and readiness. More units (like that couple of corps units in Petrozavodsk) will be railed to Sumy-Kursk on the following turns.

Image
Image

Med last Allies turn. Reggio was taken by British infantry in Calabria. In Sicily couple of garrisons were destroyed. And in Sardinia, Australians landed and battered Italian defending units:

Image

Med axis turn. Repairings in Sicily and in Sardinia:

Turn 71. July 2, 1943.

Eastern front last Allies turn. Red army attacked and took Orel. In Donets, they attacked a Romanian unit (mech) that barely survived:

Image

Eastern front Axis turn. Although Luftwaffe is not fully ready, Germans started their Summer offensive killing 2 Soviet units (a corps 1xSE of Orel and a mech 2xSE of Kursk). In Donets front, Axis counterattack, strongly supported by Luftwaffe, destroyed bridgehead formed by Soviet Guards unit:

Image

Med last Allies turn. Australians entered Cagliari:

Image

Med Axis turn. Italian army moved SW in Calabria to meet recently landed Allied forces.

Turn 72. July 22, 1943.

Eastern front. No attacks from Soviets in last Allies turn. In Axis turn, railing of land units, repairing of air units and upgrades:

Image
Image

Med last Allies turn. Allied progress in Sicily is slow but steady (1 more unit destroyed):

Image

Med Axis turn. Italian army in Calabria positioned to attack US corps recently landed there. Some air support might be available for that attack. Italian subs kept on harassing Allied CV's units.

Atlantic. Due to increased ASW Allied operations, recently a German sub was sunk by a strat. Anyway, u-boats have continued to be effective vs convoys. As samples, Central and Southern convoys strengths shown in the shot below are not the strengths with which they started: 89 and 51 were the PP's that, respectively, Central and Southern convoy had before being attacked several times by German subs. and Southern convoy started with 51 PP's. German subs are even attacking Allied escorts like that halved US DD.

Image

Western Europe. Allied strats bombed unescorted German resources without. Anyway, Allied bombers losses are slightly lower than before due to upgrades:

Turn 73. August 11, 1943.

Eastern front. Everything is ready. We wil attack soon!:

Image
Image

Med last allies turn. Unexpected Allied landing in Albania. Tirana defenders were attacked and much weakened but the city holds for now. In Sicily, further Italian unit killed and Palermo itself, invested:

Image

Med Axis turn. Worrying Allied operation in Albania made Axis air forces to focus on attacking landed British unit. Attack was not much successful and only slightly weakened Allied armoured unit. At least, US intercepting carrier got depleted in an engagement with Luftwaffe fighter:

Image

Atlantic. Allies have deployed strong ASW air forces in the Atlantic making life harder and harder for u-boats. So, RAF strats, in cooperation with US DD, sunk another German sub (it was the sub that attacked US DD in last turn):

Turn 74. August 31, 1943.

Eastern front. German offensive was postponed to September, last guaranteed fair weather turn.

Med last Allies turn. Americans entered Palermo whilst progress in the rest of Sicily is good aswell (Italian paratrooper unit was halved in strength after Allied attacks). On the contrary, in Albania, progress is slower:

Image

Med Axis turn. In Calabria, Italian army attacked US corps with not much success:

Image

Western front. Allied strategic bombers started to target objectives in France. This way, in last Allies turn they bombed Paris, halving its PP's. Usual bombings of Ruhr continued. In Axis turn, German strategic reserves started to be deployed in France, like a SS mech that was railed to Orleans:

How is the Axis oil and manpower situation?

Italy would fall soon so wouldn't it be best to send German units into Italy to hold the line there once the Italian units are removed?
