Impact resultant Cohesion Test

Post by ravenflight » Tue Dec 23, 2014 11:21 pm

Hi All,

Just out there pondering something for the hell of it...

Let's say I have a line of Average Heavy Foot Defensive Spearmen. They want to attack an enemy but naturally get no POA against this enemy. Let's say that this attack is the worst possible attack, however the Defensive Spearmen start steady and are charging a unit in the open. The unit is led by an Inspirational General not fighting in the front rank. The losses to the Defensive Spearmen at impact are (let's make this spectacular) 10:0. Let's assume that the BG has enough 'third rankers' to absorb casualties and thus maintain a second rank for the melee phase.

What chance has the Defensive Spearmen got of passing the Cohesion Test, and in doing so maintaining order.

I'm guessing the worst possible impact would be against knightly lance or Impact Foot?

By my reckoning,

-1 loosing impact
-1 loosing to impact foot/lancers etc.
-1 HP2B (Assumed)
+1 commander
+1 inspired commander

So minus 1, need an eight to pass, so a 15 in 36 chance of passing.

Of course other possible modifiers:
+1 rear support
-1 threatened flank
-1 more than one reason to test (can't really see how this one would apply for this test, but for completeness sake!)

Ian.

Yes, I think I'd design my attack to include rear support... especially seeing (as I understand it) rear support is easier to come by with V2.

So, basically an evens, needing a 7 to pass. Pretty good really. Unless you fail :)

{edit} but aren't you forgetting the 2 more hits than received?

That only applies in the melee.

Assuming an IC and rear support and no threatened flank or other minus you will pass on a 7.

There's a sneaky way to get rear support.

Of course, you did say a line of spears. Let's say two units of 12, 4 wide: AB. Since you're sneaky, and are doing this because you'd be up in melee if steady, one thing you can do is charge with just one unit, say A, but wheel the charge slightly so that when you hit the enemy, one file of B is to your rear. Those bases, and the three next to them will be enough to give you rear support. It'll go away when you conform perhaps, but then you should be at an advantage, so probably don't need to test.

That's not sneaky. That's tactics. I do it all the time. Tragically, it never seems to make a difference and I disrupt anyway.

I've found the best way to survive against impossible odds is to try not to stack them in your favour and just hope.

So... charge superir enemy impact foot with poor naked mob and just roll 5's. Got it!
