Dash to the Wire

Post by braccada »

21 November 1941 (Watch Part 1)
The British are striking at Sidi Rezegh and surrounded our border defenses at Sollum. My forces will have to rush to the defense and at the same time prevent the Tobruk garrison from braking out and linking with the relief force.

22 November 1941
On the second day of the battle our Panzers are slowly winning the upper hand. Lots of Crusader and Stuart tanks are left burning in the desert and as long as the Italians can keep the Tobruk garrison in check Sidi Rezegh is save again.

We are dashing towards the wire to hit the British forces assembled to once again take Sollum in the flank and maybe find and destroy supply dumps that are allegedly hidden in the desert region close to the border.

23 November 1941 (Watch Part 2)
We linked up with the defenders at Sollum and after heavy fighting throughout the day several Mathilda tanks are left destroyed and the English border defense is collapsing. I hope to exploit the situation and want to push towards Sidi Barini. That means if the supply situation and high command allow further aggressive advances.

24 November 1941
Preluded by heavy artillery bombardment the commander of the Tobruk garrison finally ordered a breakout. The 16th Infantry Brigade leads the attack against El Duda. The defending Italien units are well dug in, but ill equiped. Luckily the English commander seems to be a vacillator. With the releave force already shattered the order comes late and he seems to be reluctant to fully commit. Maybe it is a mistake but therefore I trust that the Italians will hold with the support of 75th Artillery Regiment and strong Luftwaffe elements. I want Sidi Barini.

25 November 1941
The situation is chaotic. The English commander blindly sent in another attack wave from deep inside the Egytian desert. They obviously got surprised by our quick advance and my Panzers ambushed them in the open desert. English casualties were staggering.

At the Tobruk perimeter the English determination is growing, but the Italian infantry regiments managed to repel severall attacks despite the English commander is now bringing forward his Mathilda tanks. The Italians have nothing that can wound those beasts. Maybe the can be lured in the open desert where my Stukas reign.

26 November 1941 (Watch Part 3)
Much needed reinforcements have arrived from Tunesia to support the Tobruk perimenter. Meanwhile English resistance on the coast towards Sidi Barrani has collapsed, but we are facing severe supply issues now. The only thing that keeps us going are raided English supply depots.

29 November 1941
Sidi Barrani is ours but it was all for nothing. We are running out of water, fuel and ammunition and it is becoming next to impossible to hold the English back at Tobruk. We must end the siege of Tobruk and withdraw until some solution is found for our logistical failures!

Second Offensive

Post by braccada »

23 December 1941 (Watch Part 1)
The ongoing sandstorm offers some opportunities. Instead of withdrawing towards El Agheila I ordered to form defensive lines at Msus and Barce. The English commander did not expect us to make a stand here and ran right into the trap. Meanwhile supported by mobile artillery my Panzers are performing a fighting withdrawal against British Crusaders in the desert.

24 December 1941
British units are already in our back! What a nice surprise for Christmas Eve. I figure that will be only a samll force and maybe it will be best to let them have El Agheila and surround them later. Once the run out of supplies they will be an easy target.

25 December 1941
Finally the weather cleared up and we could use this opportunity for a little surprise attack that destroyed most of the British airforce and left quite a few enemy tanks burning in the desert.

27 December 1941
We are still able to repulse the British attacks that are still growing in intensity. But so do increase their losses and I highly doubt they keep that up much longer.

29 December 1941
Losses keep rising on both sides and still no decisive blow could be dealt by either side.

30 December 1941 (Watch Part 2)
In the open desert we not only managed to stop the British assault, we quite literally destroyed them. Only Barce at the coast is still under heavy pressure. However with the pressure lifted of my big center battlegroup we are free to move again and have regained the initiative.

1 January 1942
I think control over the situation is firmly established now. Strong forces are moving towards El Agheila to destroy the isolated enemy units in the region and in the north British troops advancing through the Jebel Akhdar mountains get stopped and overwhelmed.

3 January 1942
Now it's our turn to push back. The British commander seems to have drained his reserves and we are quickly taking back lost territory. Some towns along our way were completely abandoned by the British.

10 January 1942
El Agheila is ours again and in the North my troops are aggressively pushing ahead on the coast road and already took the important airfield of Derna. In the desert however we spotted some advancing British tanks. The 15th and 16th SS Panzers and the Luftwaffe will deal with them.

11 January 1942
Finally reinforcements with orders for a second offensive arrived at El Agheila. I would say we are already a step ahead :)

Gazala Line

Post by braccada »

26 May 1942 (Watch Part 1)
We are finally ready to strike at Tobruk again. The British have neglected the defenses of Tobruk and instead chose to massively fortify the Gazala Line. So my plan is to swing around the defenses at Bir Hacheim and go for Tobruk directly.

31 May 1942 (Watch Part 2)
Our Italian Allies are engaged in heavy fighting all along the Gazala Line. That should keep the British locked down while my Battle group makes its way around Bir Hacheim. And for the moment the plan seems to work. Gruppe Hecker was able to take Gazala and its important airfields in a swift strike and I am advancing on Bir el Gubi in order to secure another valuable airfield. If we succeed here the Royal Airforce will have a hard time operating and we will be the ones that can provide close air support.

4 June 1942
Bir Hacheim and el Gubi are in German hands and my battle group is half way to Tobruk fighting mobile British tank reserves in the back of the Gazala Line. Even the Italian attacks are gaining some ground allowing us to link up at Bir el Harmat.

6 June 1942 (Watch Part 3)
The SAS tried to do a landing operation in our back in order to damage or take our airfields. They got spotted in time and my Jagdflieger shot down most of them while they were still in the air. Meanwhile a small German battle group is nearing the Gambut airfields. I hope the English do not expect an attack that far in their back.

10 June 1942
It is all about control of the airfields now. A large British task force is attacking Bir el Gubi, but our intelligence was on point and so we could prepare in time. In the north Italian Sahariana fight for Gambut and my central battle group took the airfield at El Adem, In the process most armored reserves of the enemy got destroyed and the way to Tobruk is now wide open!

11 June 1942 (Watch Part 4)
Finally all airfields in the area are in our hands and scouts could establish that the Tobruk defenses indeed are in pretty poor shape. Moreover once we take Sidi Rezegh the encirclement is complete and with air superiority secured, we should have little trouble breaking the last resistance pockets at the Gazala line and the Tobruk perimeter.

17 June 1942 (Watch Part 5)
Sidi Rezegh is taken and my forces assemble for the final push towards Tobruk and the back of the Gazala Line. The Italians still put up a brave fight there and it is high time to relieve them.

19 June 1942
The British line is in pure chaos. They are giving up their positions in the trenches and while most of them are trying to reach Tobruk some actually attack into the Italien line. That is causing the Italians some trouble, but will speed up the destruction of the British in the end.

24 June 1942
Tobruk has fallen and all enemy units at the Gazala Line got surrounded and destroyed. With our supply issues solved, the way to Egypt is now wide open!

Malta

Post by braccada »

7 July 1942 (Watch Part 1)
With the fall of Tobruk Operation Herkules finally has been authorised. We are to seize Malta and thereby take away another important British base of operations in the Mediterranean. With Malta in German hands supplies to Africa will be secure and we can support a further advance into Egypt. Great naval, airborne and amphibious forces have been assembled and are at my command. Intelligence indicates formidable defences and as always time is limited, but I am confident, that this will be a swift victory.

9 July 1942
The British defenders were well prepared and our landing forces suffered unexpectidely high losses in the first hours of the operation. To further complicate our situation a large British convoy of the Royal Navy is headed our way. My orders are not to let it escape, but at the moment I am more worried about the damage they could inflict.

11 July 1942 (Watch Part 2)
It is starting to look better! Luckily the island is small enough, so that we can concentrate our artillery fire on one position after the other. This way even be most entrenched positions get overwhelmed. Moreover in a combined effort the Regina Marina and my strategic bombers sunk the British fleet within hours! Now we can add the ship artillery to lay siege on the British defenders.

15 July 1942
British resistance still is fierce. The defense is well prepared and it takes time to fight for every entrenchment, every town and every village. We will win, I do not doubt that, but I begin to worry about the price in men, material and time.

21 July 1942 (Watch Part 3)
The Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine saved the day. The garrisons at Zejtun, Valetta and Rabat put up a hell of fight but after heavy bombardments we took our last objectives in the morning. Malta is captured that will redefine the war in Africa and the Mediterranean.

Alam Halfa

Post by braccada »

31 August 1942 (Watch Part 1)
We cannot stop now! We must reach the coast line and the British rear and complete their envelopment. Our best chance will an onslaught from the south along the Alam Halfa Ridge. At the same time our Italian allies will attack in the north and keep the forces there pinned.

1 September 1942
We are in heavy fighting along the front line and I am satisfied with our progress so far. During the first day we not only managed to break through the mine field in the south, we also put the defenders under heavy pressure and their complete line might falter.

2 September 1942 (Watch Part 2)
Our Italian forces did a great job on the front towards El Alamein. They secured a extremely well defended forward airfield and shattered the defensive line. Now the way to El Alamein is open. Moreover that opened strategic options. We can already push ahead and reach the coast line and attack the Alam el Halfa ridge from both sides. The main battle group did an excellent job as well. The only airfield in the desert is ours, the Royal Airforce diminished and the way towards our final objectives around El Imayid wide open.

3 September 1942 (Watch Part 3)
We are facing a last British attempt to turn the situation around. Strong Australian infantry units at El Alamein tried to overwhelm the Italian positions, but failed miserably. El Alamein is now occupied by Italian forces. A joint US and British air strike suffered the same fate shot down by my BF109s.

4 September 1942
British forces are surrendering and El Imayid has fallen. A magnificent victory for Germany and the Suez is now open to attack.

Suez Canal

Post by braccada »

9 September 1942 (Watch Part 1)
The pyramids are in sight! We are about to launch our attack on Alexandria, Cairo and most importantly the Suez Canal. The British defenses supported by the river nile and the delta will be formidable.

12 September 1942
Finally our massive concentration of forces around Alexandria led to success. In the morning with the 30th Engineer Division the last defenders surrendered and the British commander handed over the city. Our next objective will we securing vital bridges over the nile and force our way into Cairo.

16 September 1942 (Watch Part 2)
Suprise attack from the southern desert. A big British armored group appeared out of nowhere attacking our rear. I had to assemble an improvised kampfgruppe and only after heavy fighting the British could be repelled.

18 September 1942
Fighting in and around Cairo! The British are throwing surprising amounts of forces into the defense of the city and the Nile delta. With wave after wave of Spitfires and Hurricanes and countless small groups of tanks they exploit every weakness in our defenses and make us pay for every meter of advance. Still I am confident Cairo will fall tomorrow and then the canal must follow!

20 September 1942 (Watch Part 3)
Cairo is in German hands and the final attack across the canal is under way. Port Said and Port Tewfik are well defended and the British still manage to bring forward a surprising amount of Crusader tanks. Their losses are staggering, but they delay our advance. If there are still substantial reinforcements, we could be in serious trouble.

25 September 1942
The Suez is seized bringing British naval operation to a stop. Now we can begin to dismember the British Empire. For me the next step will be an advance into Palestine.

Palestine

Post by braccada »

12 October 1942 (Watch Part 1)
Our new key objective is to secure the oil pipeline between Kirkuk in Iraq and Haifa in Palestine. Several key pumping stations have been taken by Arab volunteers and we must move quickly to releave them from British attacks.

15 October 1942
Strong British armored forces in the area and a strong presence of the Royal navy prevent a quick advance and for the next couple of days we depend on the Arabs guard the pumping stations. So far they do a great job at repelling numerous British attacks.

17 October 1942 (Watch Part 2)
The last day brought decisive progress with the destruction of the local presence of the Royal navy and the bulk of British armor. This opens the way to Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and more good news. The Arabs are doing a formidable job and after beating back the attacks they are on the offensive now and might even be able to take Haifa.

25 October 1942 (Watch Part 3)
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv have been taken after heavy fighting. The resistance was fierce and combined artillery and aerial bombardment were necessary to break them. Our forces now have to race ahead to Jordan and secure Deera and Amman.

27 October 1942
With the pipeline seized and Arab support secured we should have no more problems with oil supply. No limit on our advance is in sight, the rest of the Middle East lies open!

Syria

Post by braccada »

7 November 1942 (Watch Part 1)
It seems our friends in the Abwehr have gotten into a bit of trouble and need our help. One of our planes went down near Aleppo in Syria. On board was a senior Abwehr agent running a delicate operation in Turkey. Abwehr wants their agent back before he can be interrogated and reveal what he knows. We will send in a special unit paratroopers to capture the airfield near Aleppo, release the agent and bring him by air to Haifa. At the same time I am ordered to undertake a wider incursion into Syria and seize major towns and airfields. With a quick push we might even be able to link up with the fallschirmjäger and further distract the British. At any rate neutralizing Syria will ensure that our strategic flank is secure for further operations into Iraq.

12 November 1942 (Watch Part 2)
The elite Fallschirmjäger are still engaged in heavy fighting around Aleppo, but my main force has reached the final British defense line. A dense belt of mines, some prepared positions and a quite strong armored force prevents us from linking up with the Fallschirmjäger, but I am sure we have enough momentum for a quick breakthrough.

16 November 1942 (Watch Part 3)
We have released the liaison officer from enemy hands. He is back in his Bf 110 bomber and we just have to escort him back to the Haifa airfield.

18 November 1942
After taking Palmyra another counter attack got my forces by surprise. They managed to inflict some damage, but as often those attack are suicide attempts and this one again resulted in the complete destruction of the remaining allied forces in Syria. A complete success and yet more of the Middle East has fallen under our direct control.

Iraq

Post by braccada »

17 December 1942 (Watch Part 1)
The invasion of Iraq is our next great task. Apparently the British plan a large reinforcement of their air presence. The key to its success is the airfield at Baghdad. An advanced communications center is being built there that will coordinate these larger air forces as well as an array of air-defense radars. We will have to destroy this center promtly to hamper the British efforts.

25 December 1942 (Watch Part 2)
After heavy fighting along the Tigris my troops managed to take Mosul and Baghdad despite fierce British resistance. After the destruction of the communication center the Royal Airforce more or less abandoned the area and it should be rather easy to drive the British out of Iraq completely. The oil certainly would be needed.

4 Janury 1943 (Watch Part 3)
We took every single objective assigned to us and secured a complete success. We can now restore the government the British overthrew in 1941 and follow up with an attack on Basra in the South.

Basra

Post by braccada »

6 Februar 1943 (Watch Part 1)
The Allies have retained a foothold in Iraq by controlling the port of Basra on the Persian Golf. This foothold must be removed if we are to clear the way for our attack into Persia and make our Iraqi friends secure in establishing a new anti-British government in Baghdad. My objectives are to take several targets in the city itself and the Shaiba airfield. Since the British have turned the city into a fortress that will be far from easy.

8 Februar 1943 (Watch Part 2)
After destroying the initial line of fortifications and crossing the Shatt al Arab into the inner city the most difficult part should be over already. My troops did an excellent job and the new equipment, namely the new Tiger tanks, could prove its value. The Tiger seems to be utterly indestructible!

9 Februar 1943
Surprise attack by the Royal Airforce that is trying to swarm us with Fallschirmjäger. Apparently they are lacking fighters to provide cover so I do not understand that move at all. It is pointless suicide attack that despite killing a lot of men achieves nothing.

13 Februar 1943 (Watch Part 3)
The English presence in Iraq has been utterly annihilated! With Basra secure, nothing ca deter us now from undertaking the attack on Persia. Iraq was only a prelude!

12 April 1943 (Watch Part 1)
The time has come to end the Anglo-Soviet occupation of Iran. The Persian corridor has proved a key route for sending Lend Lease supplies to the Soviet Union. The quantities of supplies that have been delivered are vast and have been an enormous asset to the Russians. I will encounter a complete Allied army with Soviet, British and even American troops combining against us to defend this vital life-line. Moreover I have find and destroy Lend Lease convoys in the area. A victory in Persia will not only starve the Russians of vital support but will create a back door to the Caucasus an opportunity to link to our forces in Russia.

16 April 1943 (Watch Part 2)
The Allied resistance is massive. It took the Luftwaffe four days to gain air supperiority and on the ground there is a huge presence of Soviet and US tanks that are giving us a hard time. A US counter attack in the south is trying to cross the Tigris and the Soviets are struggling to keep a corridor open for the Lend Lease convoys.

23 April 1943 (Watch Part 3)
It seems we got all Lend Lease convoys headed for the Caucasus and the Soviet and US forces in the area are getting overwhelmed. I am leaving some forces to deal with the last remaining pockets of resistance. The core of my units are already closing in on the northern cities held by the British.

5 May 1943 (Watch Part 4)
My victory in Persia opened the opportunity to drive northward into the Caucasus and link up with our forces in Russia.

1 July 1943 (Watch Part 1)
At last we have the opportunity to assist our forces in Russia and unify our strategic purposes. The conquest of Persia has opened a gateway to Russia through the Caucasus Mountains. Russia's southern flank is now vulverable and her great oil fields are open to attack. Moreover our attack coincides with another offensive at Kursk and the Russians will be faced with a dual threat that will overtax their strenght and multiply their chance of defeat.

9 July 1943 (Watch Part 2)
With the Fall of Tiblisi and Baku the southern part of our field of operations is under control. Across the Caucasus the attack of my heavy Panzerdivision is in full swing and runs over several Soviet tank groups preparing for defensive operations.

12 July 1943 (Watch Part 3)
The Soviet resistance more or less is collapsing. They managed to mount a counter offensive out of the mountain passes, but achieved nothing but senseless slaughter of their mountain infantry. What's left is a race towards Sochi, because Turkey is sympathetic to our cause and willing to provide a naval supply corridor through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles. To make us of it we need a Black Sea port. So Sochi it is.

25 July 1943 (Watch Part 4)
A crushing success, Russia's southern flank is ours. Her oil will soon be ours. And perhaps even final victory in Russia will be ours. But we have seen the last of Russia for now. Arabia awaits...

Arabia

Post by braccada »

12 October 1943 (Watch Part 1)
Intelligence informs us that the English managed to build up a considerable force in their East African dominions and intend to retake the Suez Canal. Their plan, we believe, is to split their force, with one prong of the pincer enveloping the Canal from the Arabia peninsula while the other approaches from the south. My orders are to penetrate Arabia and defeat the English before their plans can develop further. My only objective is the complete destruction of the enemy's forces but success here will of course have the added advantage of bringing the Arabian Peninsula and its vast oil reserves under our complete military domination.

22 October 1943 (Watch Part 2)
After breaking through the initial line of defence my troops push hard and fast towards the coast. The British are fielding strong armored battle groups consisting mainly of Churchill and Chromwell tanks. It takes time to deal with them, but they are no match for my Tigers and Pathers supported by the Luftwaffe.

29 October 1943 (Watch Part 3)
Arabia is ours and one prong of the British counteroffensive has been broken.

7 November 1943 (Watch Part 1)
With Arabia secure in our back, the task now is to defeat the second prong of England's attempt to recapture the Suez Canal. I am to invade British East Africa, the last base of operations remaining to them in this theatr of war. In doing so I will restore our flag to colonies that were ours before they were stolen by the English during the Great War. It is to be an amphibious attack. Once we have overcome resistance on the beaches we will penetrate inland an destroy the enemy's strongpoints in the interior. They will be heavily defended; victory will come only at cost. If we counter the enemy here, we will be able to cast our eyes eastward again.

15 November 1943 (Watch Part 2)
The initial resistance at the coast has broken down and I am racing two Kampfgruppen inwards. The desert seems to be empty and we should hit the English strong points by surprise.

17 December 1943 (Watch Part 3)
We have destroyed the British presence in East Africa. All of our gains in North Africa and the Middle East are much more secure thanks to those recent victories. The British counteroffensive failed in all its objectives, but it did distract us from our eastern plans.

On the Road to India

Post by braccada »

27 October 1944 (Watch Part 1)
India beckons! The final great jewel in the British Crown is nearly ripe for the taking! However, before India can be gained the approaches must be won. That will not be easy. Our stratecig reconnaissance is poor in these distant eastern regions, but we do know that the enemy will defend in depth, with line upon line, and all the remaining strength of the British Empire will surely come into play. Of particular concern is a new tank, the Sherman Firefly. Its gun is a great improvement and will challenge even my best armor.

18 April 1944 (Watch Part 2)
After breaking through the first line of British defenses progress has been good and the new Firefly has proven to be no match for my experienced tank commanders. We should be able to cross the desert in the next couple of days and reach India in perfect condition.

6 May 1944 (Watch Part 3)
6 May 1944 - A marvelous success! We have thrown open the gates of India.

British India

Post by braccada »

6 June 1944 (Watch Part 1)
It is a historic moment. We are about to invade India and by this dismantle the British Empire. In order to secure a complete success it would be best to destroy the main headquarters aling with several crucial cities. The task will be further simplified by destroying the rail transports that are vital to British hpoes of reinforcement.

27 June 1944 (Watch Part 2)
We have broken through the initial line of defense with ease and got through the jungle to the Indian heartland. However the Luftwaffe is having a bad time and is completely outmatched by new British jet fighters. This is going to be painful.

15 July 1944 (Watch Part 3)
For some crucial days it seemed the British had fought us to a stalemate in central India. My panzers and fighters prevailed in the end, but the losses have been painful. Air superiority is secured and the British armored forces are crippled. However there is more jungle and more mountains ahead of us. Can we keep up the momentum for a final push towards the eastern coast and the British HQ?

2 August 1944 (Watch Part 4)
The attack on the British Headquarter is imminent and the British are reduced to some strongholds along the coast. With the Luftwaffe finally controlling the sky the remainder of the Royal Navy is exposed to our bombers. In short the British situation is desperate.

It is done :) (Watch Part 5)
Afrika Korps has been a great experience. Looking forward to campaigns coming soon! Thanks for watching and commenting as always it has been nice to have you onboard!

Now I wish I had done Italian Challenge right away :) It adds more flavour to the campaign and I still think it does not make too much difference. I think I bought only very few German units anyways. So good luck you seem to do very well so far!

well if I had restrained from posting the AAR for a week or so my progress would be me consistent.

But the AAR posts needed some time and concentration so i actually innterrupted playing a bit and like you mentioned in the British India Video I lost some of my touch and identification with my troops as well and missed a few very obvious upgrades for a few scenarios.

Nevermind right now I picked up playing again and want to close out the campaign, which on the other side means less frequent scenario Reports.

One or the other has to take the backseat .....

Hi Braccada,

I have watched a few of your AK lets play videos on YT and I am pretty impressed, you seem to always have a well thought out battle plan, with crisp implementation. Cautious where need to be, decisive and fast where required.

I would like to ask, why u are using half track transport for infantry. I use only trucks for infantry and arty on general (and swimming in prestige) and it seems to be enough. I know that Rommel is a different experience and requires different tactics
so I would like to ask whether there is some deeper reasoning behind using expensive half tracks instead of normal trucks?

Thx
Janos
