Description: Operation Cartwheel will neutralise and bypass the Japanese base at Rabaul. Dominating the strategic Vitiaz Strait between New Britain and New Guinea is part of that plan. That in turn requires control of western New Britain.

Description: Early in the Pacific war, both the Japanese army and navy advanced almost unchecked. They invaded New Guinea and set their sights on taking Port Moresby. The route over New Guinea's Owen Stanley Mountain Range was known as "The Kokoda Trail". This trail traversed some of the most rugged terrain in the world.
