Cavalry

Post by terminator »

Is it possible to have more cavalry for the nations :?:

- Beginning a scenario with France in 1940 : No French Cavalry :(
- Beginning a scenario with Romania in 1941 : No Romanian Cavalry :(
- No German Cavalry for all scenario :(
(Waffen SS should also have cavalry : SS Div8 - Florian Geyer (Cavalry) )
German used the cavalry till the end of the war :!:

I know that it is possible to use the cavalry of the other nations (polish, Russian) but it is not maybe the best solution (the country of origin is always indicated).

I agree with you. In 1939 and later armies had a quite a lot of the cavalry. and it would be cool to add the zundapp motocycle to the german army and another too. For me personally miss infantry typical unit but smaller and a little bit cheaper like inf. regiment and a little weaker than main inf/heavy infantry. With 2 command points. It can help to create close to historical proportion of the forces. More details could make this game even more attractive and realistic.

I knew that photo looked familiar! I thought I had included it in my "I am impressed with unit artwork and detail" thread (which has been dormant too long; I am going to revive it soon) but no, I commented on it in my "From 'Man on a Pony' back to respectability!" thread (which I will not link to because it took an unfortunate and unpleasant turn toward the end). In it, I was celebrating about my forum avatar having gone from a Panzer to a Cavalry unit, which I disliked, back to a Panzer based on my post count (this was back in my civilian days, of course):

Andy came in and posted that picture above with the comment "Why so miffed? Manliest unit ever! 8)" I answered, "Actually, I can imagine that picture on a projection screen in cavalry training camp: "Men, this is a good way to get shot! Don't present a target to the enemy like this." :)

All a total non-sequitur, sorry. Yes, there should be more cavalry units in the game (we only have Japanese and Mongolian cavalry so far?) but the development phase in which they would have appeared for the Germans at least is past now, perhaps (Blitzkrieg).

P.S., another non-sequitur: For some reason, when those cavalry units get shot at in the game, they shake their heads back and forth briefly as if saying "That's all you got? Get serious!" I like that.

For the moment I managed to add a unit of French cavalry (unit n°5000, polish model) but I did not manage to change its name (she should be called "Light Cavalry" and not unit_5000) ?

All right, since it's exceedingly dull around here anyway right now (other than your fine efforts, of course), I'll bite. Would you mind explaining what the heck this is?

The possibilities that come to mind are these:
  • You have discovered evidence of a secret WWII weapon never seen before.
You have introduced aliens into your OOB mod.
You are a member of a cult whose symbol is "moosehead with mustache."
You spilled hot chocolate on your picture.

During World War 2 Finnish Army had only two large cavalry units, both of which somewhat of an elite status from the pre-war years. These regiments had originally been created during Finnish Civil War in year 1918 and were called Uudenmaan Rakuunarykmentti (Uusimaa Dragoon Regiment) and Hämeen Ratsurykmentti (Häme Cavalry Regiment). These two units were also well known for their abbreviations - URR for Uusimaa Dragoon Regiment and HRR for Häme Cavalry Regiment. Especially URR had notable prestige status in pre-war years with Mannerheim as its honorary commander etc and the both units were known for their rather lavish parade uniforms. While these units were called regiments, manpower for each of them was actually closer to size of infantry battalion. Due to this during the war they were used to form Ratsuväkiprikaati (Cavalry Brigade). This was just one of the things, which made these cavalry units rather exceptional among Finnish units of that time. For one thing they were only units of Finnish Army to be issued also with swords (cavalry sword, which was actually technically a sabre), which remained in their use until autumn of 1941. During pre-war years considerable effort had been placed in training their soldiers to use their swords and firearms also from back of a horse, but during the war they fought as mounted infantry. In other words - they used riding horses to get from one place to another, but dismounted for battle. During Winter War (1939 - 1940) both regiments served dismounted (in other words: without their horses). For Continuation War they received their horses, but as the war dragged on their horses were replaced by bicycles in ever increasing extent. Cavalry also had rifle models of their own, from which cavalry rifle M/27 was most common during World War 2. Cavalry units also their own specialities in naming system, one of which was calling their companies as Eskadroona (Squadron). During World War Cavalry Brigade and its regiments took part in many decisive battles gaining reputation being among the best units of Finnish Army.
Besides the two above-mentioned regiments, Finnish Army had also some smaller cavalry units. Most important of these were cavalry squadrons (companies) of Winter War (1939 - 1940) era Light Detachment (Kevyt Osasto).

You can combine the ski and the horse (URR for Uusimaa Dragoon Regiment) :

It could be represented in the game by this unit (?) :

Or maybe make this unit switchable : horse(cavalry) <-> ski :?:

If I've got my "Order of Battle" correct the Germans only had 1 Kavalrie Div consisting of 2 Regiments. If memory serves me right, they fought with the 3rd Armee in Poland and HeeresGruppe B in the Netherlands (before being disbanded).

According to wikipedia it also fought in the opening stages of Barbarossa.
It was assigned to XXIV Army Corps before being sent back to France in November 1941.
The division's 17000 horses were distributed to other divisions.

Horse-drawn transportation was most important for Germany, as it was relatively lacking in natural oil resources. Infantry and horse-drawn artillery formed the bulk of the German Army throughout the war; only one-fifth of the Army belonged to mobile panzer and mechanized divisions. Each German infantry division employed thousands of horses and thousands of men taking care of them. Despite losses of horses to enemy action, exposure and disease, Germany maintained a steady supply of work and saddle horses until 1945. Cavalry in the Army and the SS gradually increased in size, peaking at six cavalry divisions in February 1945.
