Ploesti Revisited (1944)
by bru888 (Bru)
Description: On August 1, 1943, 177 B-24 bombers took off from Benghazi, Libya in Operation Tidal Wave, a mission to destroy oil refineries in Ploesti, Romania. Nearly one-third of them never returned. The distance was too far for fighter escort, the bombers flew too low trying to avoid radar detection, and at that altitude anti-aircraft defenses were too strong. While some damage was inflicted, it was not enough to justify our losses. Eight months later, we now have air bases in Foggia, Italy, less than 600 miles away from Ploesti. Now we can have fighters - late model P-38 Lightnings and P-51 Mustangs equipped with drop tanks - escort our bombers all the way to Ploesti and back. Now we will return and finish the job properly. Now is the time for Ploesti Revisited.

The Raid on Kirkenes (1941)
by bru888 (Bru)
Description: The United Kingdom is now an ally of the Soviet Union, the foe of Germany and Finland in the Continuation War. The British have decided that the best way to show support for their new ally would be to attack ports occupied by the Axis. The northern Norwegian port of Kirkenes and the northern Finnish port of Petsamo have been selected as targets. Flying from the aircraft carriers HMS Victorious and Furious, flights of Swordfish and Albacore bombers, and Fairey Fulmar and Sea Hurricane fighters, descend upon both ports on 30 July 1941. The attack on Petsamo is a dud. The raid on Kirkenes will be quite a battle, however.

Operation Lila Denied (1942)
by bru888 (Bru)
Description: Toulon, France, 27 November 1942
The Allied invasion of North Africa has provoked the Germans into invading the 'zone libre' of France, governed by Vichy, neutral according to the Armistice of 1940 but in reality a puppet government of Germany. Yet not all in Vichy are in the thrall of the Nazis. The Secretary of the Navy, Admiral Gabriel Auphan, has guessed correctly that the Germans are aiming to seize the large French fleet at Toulon, and has ordered it to be scuttled. The Germans are rushing to prevent this. Operation Lila begins on 27 November with Germany's 7th Panzer Division, augmented with units from the 2nd SS Panzer Division, converging on Toulon from the east and west. To complicate matters, a British fleet lurks in the outer harbour. Technically, the French naval crews and the small Toulon garrison owe their allegiance to Vichy France. For one day, however, they and a few civilian volunteers will become honorary members of the Free France movement.

Battle of the Scheldt (1944)
by bru888 (Bru)
Description: Zeeland, Netherlands, 27 November 1942
The good news is, the port of Antwerp is in the hands of the Allies. As they advance into Germany, Antwerp will go a long way toward relieving the bottlenecks at Cherbourg and ports in Brittany. The bad news is, Antwerp is currently useless as its port is closed.
Communication with the North Sea from Antwerp requires control of the estuary at the mouth of the River Scheldt, including Walcheren Island and Beveland on the north side of the West Scheldt, and the low-lying lands on the southern bank of the estuary. The Germans are well aware of this and have these areas heavily fortified.
Under the command of Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds, the First Canadian Army, with Canadian, Polish and British units attached, will open up the shipping route to Antwerp so that its port can be used to supply the Allies in northwest Europe. Knowing what is at stake, well-established Wehrmacht defenders will mount a spirited defense of the Scheldt estuary, including the crude but effective tactic of opening dykes and deliberately flooding land areas along the estuary.
Meanwhile, with the capture or destruction of the launch facilities used to attack England, V-1 flying bombs are now being employed in attacks against strategic points in Belgium, primarily the port of Antwerp.
