Round 11: THE LIMITS OF EMPIRE
A special 3 battle round for the new year.
Roman offensives into Caledonia and Dacia represented the last attempts to conquer and hold territories. In the long run both failed: the Caledonians were never subdued and Dacia was abandoned in 275. Hadrian’s wall and the fortifications of the Rhine, Danube and Euphrates frontiers were expression of the limits of Roman imperialism, psychologically and physically. Furthermore, the political instability brought about by the assassination of Commodus in 192 proved to be a permanent feature in the coming generations, and crippled Rome in the great crisis of the 3rd century.

MONS GRAUPIUS 83 AD
Agricola, the governor of Britain, launched the invasion of Caledonia with 3 legions and numerous support troops. The native gathered to oppose him at Mons Graupius under the leadership of Calgacus.

ADAMCLISI 102 AD
Trajan marched into Dacia in 101. The Dacians under Decebalus had been a thorn on the Danube frontier. They and their allies had been responsible for the destruction of two legions (V Alaudae and XXI Rapax, of Vitellian memory...). As the Romans paused during the winter 101/102, Decebalus went on the offensive and crossed the Danube into Moesia. Trajan tracked him down and brought him to battle at Adamclisi.

ISSUS 194
In the civil war that followed the assassination of Commodus, the empire was split between three contenders: Clodius Albinus in Britain, Septimius Severus on the Danube and Pescennius Niger in Syria. After gaining control of Rome and coming to an agreement with Albinus, Severus marched against Niger. At Issus, site of Alexander’s triumph, his commander Anullinus found Niger in a strong defensive position.
