Panzer Corps 2 - Christmas special! Dev Diary #7

Post by AlbertoC » Wed Dec 19, 2018 3:09 pm

Hello All!

The holiday season is upon us, the year 2018 is almost at the end, and it is a good time to pause, look back and summarize what was achieved, what were our successes and failures.

Panzer Corps 2 did not release this year. This is... not ideal. We will not try to pretend that it’s a good thing, “because now the game will be even better and more polished”. Back when we announced it, nobody planned to deliver a bad game in 2018 either.

The good news is, the game is really turning out the way we hoped. It has come a long way since the beginning of development more than 3 years ago. We were taking many risks with this project, and it is great to see that for the most part, they are paying off. 3D graphics works and provides a level of clarity which we need. Random maps are fun to play. Historical content plays just as well. The game is 100% future proof and looks gorgeous on any displays up to 4K. We are confident that 2019 will be a “Panzer Corps 2 year” and that Panzer Corps will get a worthy successor which will deliver many hours of fun to all the fans of this genre.

We would like to thank everyone reading these diaries for your interest in the game and for valuable comments and feedback. We cannot reply to every single comment, but we read them all. And although the end of the year has been a very busy period for us, we were able to react on some of the feedback as well. For example, just yesterday Scenario Editor has got a new feature to import any Panzer Corps scenario, which can then be edited and resaved in Panzer Corps 2 format. This has been requested in the comments to one of the diaries, and now it is implemented. Please keep your feedback coming, and together we can make this game even better.

To show how Panzer Corps 2 looks now, we have prepared two new screenshots. Hope that you will enjoy them, and looking forward to telling and showing you more in the coming year. See you in 2019! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Same here. Would be nice if the player could choose between bigger and smaller models; IIRC OOB has such an option.

Yeah, I'll agree. Dont like the size of those units in pic 2. Could be scaled down and still be great.

I would like an option to change the scale of the models. They look too big.

I´m also curious about how units are going to look when placed on elevated terrain. In the screencap we can see a flak unit on top of a mountain and it looks that parts of the 3d model are inside the mountain, which looks odd.

Come on devs, you should know better :) Don't get distracted with fancy 3D unit graphics. You know we don't actually look at unit graphics, especially not after a while: we look at unit type position on the grid.

The "discount badges" are no good - there's no clear way to tell the unit type at a glance.

Also, the unit badges should snap to grid, not to unit. The bottom corner of the hex should be anchor. So if the unit is way out in the distance (like those ships on screenshot 1), the unit badge doesn't "spill over" to the hex below. I'd rather have it spill over the unit graphics, as long as I can tell the unit type. If we want to see the 3D models in their full glory, we move the darn camera so the badges don't interfere.

I know these suggestions will make you cringe, but believe me, you'll thank me later :))

Correct ^

Unit sizes have always been larger than terrain. It's so you can see them and play from a strategic point of view. It's the same for all games, including Nato units.

For me, the first picture, It is hard to tell the what action and health the unit has. I can see the number but it is hard to tell the other parameters. Can you see the arrow? I can not. The larger picture shows the arrow.

Hello and thank you for making a new Panzercorps!

I have a few questions:

Will there be an allied campaign from the start?

I would also like to see a small french campaign some day. Even if it would be a kind of high difficulty level. It could contain the battles in the netherlands, belgium and france from 1940 from allied view and delaying the german attack until autum and holding paris until 1941 e.g. could be seen as a small victory. It would be a nice "what-if" scenario, if the player would not rely on the Maginot-line, but make better use of the french troops and tanks. British troops could also be used in this scenario and maybe taken over to a british campaign.

The best thing about the new panzercorps is imo the map generator. Thanks a lot for that. (I've always loved the civilization series.)

Count me for smaller unit icons and playability over features and strategy and story over graphics.

Sorry for editing the entire post.

I deeply hope that the first modification which will come from the community will be the old 2D graphics.

It seems that 2D graphics with new mechanics will be the best choice.
