Great video, but the part from about 3:10 to 4:30 brings up a couple of concerns for me:

The big open sea areas can apparently have combat just like the coastal areas, so unless there's a large chance of avoiding contact or something, don't they make unrealistically large choke points?

Also, the AI doesn't escort it's transports with warships?

a) - you can get sea battles in the open sea regions but its rare. You can't supply a fleet there, so to use one of those as a choke point would mean having enough ships that you had 2 suitable fleets - one resupplying, one on station. If you have that sort of naval domination better to go hunting the enemy? More common is to use coastal regions to set up either a naval blockade or to try and defend a region.

b) - been changed since this release, much easier now to combine combat ships and land units into a stack so you have close escorts. Having said that, I tend to use the fleet to patrol and protect the transit zones and take my chances on getting caught - mainly on the grounds that if I am badly outmatched at sea, its not worth risking naval transport/invasion in any case.

There was an internal patch entirely devoted to naval AI post this Challenge. Among others things the AI will escort much more its convoys.
