A good game, closer than the score would suggest. God only knows how many arrows were used, a real shooting match.
A really good battle, but in the end I was outplayed. Well done, Mark.

Please read: First Time Control check, Tuesday October 22nd . . .

Post by stockwellpete » Mon Oct 07, 2019 11:10 am

Most of you know the procedure regarding the two Time Control checks (at 3 and 5 weeks) but we have quite a few new players this season who will not. The first check, at the 3 week stage, is designed to identify non-starters. All players are asked to complete one match in each section they have entered by this date. I am usually fairly flexible, so a player entering three sections who has completed two matches in one section, one match in another, and has started (but not finished) a match in the third section will be OK, whereas someone who has only completed one match in one section and has not started the other two sections may well lose one of those sections to a reserve. It is much better to play evenly across the sections that you have entered rather than concentrate, say, just on Classical Antiquity, or just on Early Middle Ages.

A slight rule change for this season means that players cannot claim a match under the 7 day rule (an opponent not making a move for 7 days without explanation) in the period up to, and including, the first Time Control check.

If you have any problems contacting a player in this first period of the tournament please contact me by PM and I will see if I can get your match started.

Also, it is very helpful to me if you do post your challenges in the "Arrange Your Matches Here" threads, rather than just arranging matches by PM. This is because I can see what is exactly happening in the tournament and who I might need to send a chaser to. Thanks. :D

Group A

Nijis (Chinese Han 200-106 BC with Wuhuan 200 BC - 200 AD allies) defeats batesmotel (Chinese Zhou & Warring States 700-351 BC) 62-40.

The Han/Wuhuan left's cavalry were pinned up against a hill by the Zhou's foot and chariots and crushed, but their right caught the refused flank of the Zhou and inflicted enough damage to scrape through to victory.

Division A

Geffalrus (Antigonid) defeated Cunningcairn (Ptolemies with Roman allies) 53-26

A very formal affair where everyone partnered up in an organized fashion. The lights fought lights, cavalry chased each other on one flank far from the main line, and the heavy infantry stared at each other until it was time to make the flank attacks happen. Lady luck was all over the place as we each dealt with good and bad double drops, sticky light cavalry charges, and clutch rallies. In the end, my combination of positioning and luck came out on top.

Very good game to my opponent.

Okie has withdrawn from Biblical because he is unable to load the TT Mod and I have approached Breogan to replace him in Division B. I am expecting that Okie will be withdrawing from Classical Antiquity, Late Antiquity and Early Middle Ages as well because he is unable to update his game to include allies. I will post again once I know more.

probably a silly question, but have you definitely got 1.5.18 installed not 1.5.3?

Division D

MikeMarchant (Ghaznavid 962-1187 CE - Allies: Turkish) defeated Doyley50 (Anglo-Danish 1017-1041 AD): 71/40

This was a really tough scrap and for several turns I thought I had it, only for one of my units to break or for one of Alan's to rally. I should have been more patient and allowed my cavarly to work its way further round the flanks before charging in, but... I just can't resist charging in.

Alan suffered from having a very heavy slow moving army strung out in a long line, while my highly mobile army was able to choose where and when to attack. Hitting both flanks at once and leaving his centre alone, I was able to encircle enough Anglo Danes to cause serious problems, while most of his infantry struggled to turn and march to the sound of the buns (my elephants eating the buns, of course). My elephants wreaked havoc and won the game for me, really, and those Anglo Danish heavies who did manage to stand their ground were repeatedly hit in the rear and flanks by cavalry and light horse, until they decided to give up and go home for a bacon sandwich and an eponymous pastry.

Back luck, Alan, an epic battle, and a lot of fun to play. Thanks for the game.

Best Wishes
