a draw:
klayeckles (arab) 58 harveylh (roman) 43
romans, seeing the large cavalry arm of the arabs chose to take a defensive position with heavy woods on both flanks. The arabs began a long process of marching to the furthest corners of the map in an attempt to find a gap in the roman flanks. Battles broke out in the woods with both sides seeing some success. then the arabs finally got a single lancer into the rear of the romans. Soon gaps were opening and romans were charging forward in hopes of defeating the arab center before things completely fell apart. As night was falling it looked like the arab lancers might crash into the roman rear while others were threatening the flanks. but the romans found the rally horn and managed to convince a few routing troops to stay for the fight...night fell just in time to save the roman army...but Augustus would not be throwing any victory feasts. GG! another fun fight.

Re: Second Time Control check . . .
The second Time Control check was scheduled for today. Because this season started on a Monday and is actually 10 weeks and 6 days long I am going to allow an extra few days and do the final check this Sunday November 10th (when there will still be 5 weeks of the tournament remaining). I have checked through the latest league tables (including the results that have been posted since Sunday) and there are a few issues of concern at the moment. This morning I will send a group PM to all the players who have not yet registered three results in each section they have entered. If you are a reserve hoping that there might be a place for you then final decisions will be made on Sunday, although if players tell me before then that they have taken on too many matches then there might be some news before then.

This was a hard fought match with the Picts relying on a patch of rough ground on their left flank to hold that side of battle while their right flank fought and won through a mixture of legionnaires, allies and cavalry.

devoncop (Moorish 350AD) drew with Sunnyboy (Huns) .............0-0
The Moors being the best possible cannon fodder for Hunnic mobility and archery prowess the Moorish General decided the plentiful woodland in the SW corner of the battlefield was hugely inviting and the Huns decided such terrain was less than ideal for their horses and a draw was agreed withing a few turns.

fikabo (Polish and Vikings) beat Ulysisgrunt (Byzantne) 43-6
Similar map and battle I think to: oscarius (Rus) - Ulysisgrunt (Byzantne).
only:
On cavalry left wing I put my weak cavalry and defensive shieldwall which has to get first charges.
My best units and many archers on right side attack infantry.
I manage to delay attack on left wing (with help massed archers in rough terrain which split front + L shape of front). My very strong units in right wing win game by destroy Byzantine infantry. I also have some problem with Klibanophoroi but after routing my shieldwall, my archers disrupt it and second has to fight with two my shieldwalls (one attack from flank) so not finish till end of game.

lydianed (Samnite + Gauls) defeated Najanaja (Pontic) 60:42
What a game. Pikes and Cataphracts got off to a flying start and knocked seven bells out of the Samnite MF. Some helpful terrain and patient overlaps allowed the Samnites to get their noses back in front and work their cavalry around the back where they were able to rout the main Pontic battle line. Pontic rallies and stubborn defending took the game to turn 44. GG Najanaja.

MikeMarchant (Ancient British 60 BCE-80 CE - Allies: Roman 24-196) defeated GeneralKostas (Frankish 496-599 AD with Breton 411-579 AD) : 46/17
With a widely dispersed Frankish opponent, deploying in discrete formations, it didn't take long for the British chariots to get through their lines and behind. While the warabnd, with Roman support, slammed into the Frankish front the chariots caused mayhem in the rear.
It's really tough to defend against once the line's been penetrated, because you just don't know which way to turn.
Bad luck, General Kostas. Thanks for a good game.
Best Wishes
Mike
