Division D
MikeMarchant (Ancient British 60 BCE-80 CE - Allies: Roman 24-196) defeated SawyerK (Pictish 210-476 AD with Scot-Irish 50 BC-476 AD ally): 60/50
This was a really lucky one which fell to me on the penultimate turn.
A large rough hill with difficult slopes dominated the centre of the field, and as my Brits advanced past it to the right hand side, the Picts swarmed up its slopes to camp on top. My chariots and cavarly went the opposite way round and quickly encircled the hill. With chariots and cavarly in place to prevent or hinder the Picts escape, my infantry formed up to face the narrow side on the right. Meanwhile, my lights had pretty much destroyed the Pict lights, giving me a decent lead on the score.
I knew I would be at a disadvantage attacking up the hill, but the gamble I took was that my infantry would have a bad time of it and back off, dragging the Picts down with me. It wasnt to be. I did have a bad time of it, but my troops refused to back off. I was losing warabnd fast, and when my two Roman lefgionary units broke I thought I would fleeing the field before long.
Fortunately, the lead I had from the early skirmishing held, and my chariots dashed left right and cetnre attacking isolated Pictish units. Late in the game there was little left but scattered units, except for a small knot of Picts still on the hill, but badly bruised, which my lights stormed. With the lead still mine, though marginally, and the final turn looming, it was my lights who pulled off an incredible coup, routing a pair of disrupted Picts to push sawyer's army over the 60% cliff edge.
All the credit for this narrow victory goes to my lights, but with an honourable mention to my chariots for creating mayhem.
A great game sawyer, and I thank you for it. It really ought to have been a drw and you didn't deserve to lose it at the last.
Best Wishes
Mike

Division B
MikeMarchant (Elamite 815-539 BCE - Allies: Babylonian) defeated General Shapur (Egyptian 570-525 BC): 61/45
A mess of proto-Biblical rage,
Swirled on pseudo-Montu's stage.
On a field of sand and blood and chariot dung.
Was Pharoah's final elegy sung.
Close wrought ends are the gods' domain,
Victory won only by their sweet rain.
And on this hoofed and wheeled and trampled ground,
Only Khumban-blessed Elamites abound.
Bad luck, General Shapur. This probably ought to have been a draw. many thanks for a great game.
Best Wishes
