If you play well, you will generally win, even against the odds... but that won't stop the game from giving you several unnecessary heart attacks along the way. Your elite units fighting downhill will get a freak double morale drop and lose the battle for you, and then your militia will fight on five turns longer than they ought to and win it right back again. This can lead to trust issues amongst newer players.

FoGII manual says (p. 145) : "Unlike FOG1, FOG2 does not attempt to replicated the tabletop game’s dice, but uses mathematical algorithms that avoid some of the extreme against-the-odds combat results that could occur in FOG1."

However, FoGII remains a game where chance plays a part.
  • When dice are physically thrown during a tabletop game, players are aware of that element of chance. If they keep on playing, it's partly because they like it, they like throwing the dice, they like the idea of luck being a part of life/of the result of a battle.
  • In FoG2 (the video game), the algorithms run in background, invisible; only the results are displayed on the screen. I am not sure that all of the players are aware that chance is a core element of this game. Thus, the moments of misfortune may be resented by some who don't get why they happen.
Maybe that element of chance should be more advertised, explicit or shown in game, one way or the other.

Speaking of "a guide to the true rules of FoGII", there's no manual in French for FoGII, isn't it ?
I haven't found any in the 'Manuals' folder and on the Net (and didn't want to create a new thread just for that question).

The French manual of P&S was actually of high quality and very helpful.

I fear not.

^ Nonetheless, I must point out that the entire text in game (UI and tutorials) is wonderfully translated :D

if you have a horse archer army against a medium infantry army, the map width will be halved by water, and covered in forests and rough terrain.

If you have a medium infantry army against a horse archer army, the map will be a giant open steppe with no rough terrain or forests.

Hehe, definitely seen this happen a few times. And my brain really, really doesn't know how to process that.

People with skill and experience will generally win in the end. The road to get to the win, however, can sometimes be a little weird.
