Classical Antiquity Division D, just wow!

Post by stockwellpete » Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:47 am

Division D of Classical Antiquity has already passed its 2nd Time Control check, which is due at the half-way stage (after 5 weeks) of the tournament! 21 of the 45 matches have been completed and Swuul has already finished all his 9 matches!

Incredible really, as I haven't begun to think about the first Time Control check (at 3 weeks) yet. Well done chaps. :D

A large forest masked our right flank. Beyond that lay a large pond followed by a large patch of rough ground. More woods blocked off the edges of that flank, but several areas of open ground provided possible avenues of advance. A small patch of rough going fell in about the center of field a bit to the right of the pond. A large forest masked off most of the enemy right.

We set up in a concave order of battle. We deployed our light foot along the fringes of the woods on our right. We split our light horse on the far left and right ends of our lines. We split our heavy horse archers into two wings back a bit from our lights. Our cataphracts were set further back in the center. Our token medium foot were hidden in the woods on our right well out of any initial dangers.

The Germans set most of the warbands in a long single line running from rough and pond out towards the right end of their deployment area. Three warbands were detached a little further to finish the line. Their light foot formed a skirmish line in the center. A lancer and light horse formed a reserve behind the left end of their line. Three lancers were held in reserve behind their right wing.

Our plan was pretty simple. The lights would move to envelope both wings followed up by a supporting division of heavy horse archers. The cataphracts would shift to attack which ever point of the line seemed most likely to crumble after our initial skirmishing.

On our right, our light foot and some light horse moved up and and began skirmishing with the enemy horse and some detached skirmishers around the rough ground at the far end of the pond. Most of our right wing heavy horse archers moved up a bit more cautiously looking for openings in a rather narrow front. In the center, some of our light horse and a heavy horse archer chased away some of the opposing lights beyond their warband line. On our left, the more open ground gave our light and heavy horse archers plenty of space to engage the opposing enemy lancers and the end of the warband line. Our cataphracts rolled slowly forward awaiting to see how things developed.

The warband line began to break up as units were detached in response to flanking threats or pursuing enemy skirmishers. Most of the lancers on our left were shot up by our horse archers and fled. On our right our horse archers got in amongst the enemy lights and routed most of them. Unmasked warband began to get disrupted and fragmented by archery on both wings. We began shifting our cataphracts to threaten the enemy right and the Germans began to shift warbands from the center and left towards the right in response, further disrupting their original line.

Some of the warbands broke under continued fire, resulting in disruptions to neighbors, especially on their right. Our cataphracts rode up to threaten and pin the warbands forming the right end of the line as our horse archers worked around to threaten flanks and rears or pursued a few broken units. On our right, our lights continued to skirmish with the surviving lancer and nearby warbands as the heavy horse archers followed after the warbands shifting to support the right.

The cataphracts and warbands finally clashed on the right with the warbands slowly losing their cohesion and breaking. A couple of turns later, some of the heavy horse archers from the left crashed into the rear of the line driving the final nails into the German coffin.

Division D

grumpydaddy845(Viking 780-899AD) beat Brenmusik(Welsh 600-1049AD) 40-5

This was pretty one sided with the Welsh proving to be too brittle to stand against the Viking shield wall. Terrain kept the Welsh, with superior numbers, from flanking and forced them to fight toe to toe with little success

Their defeat, however, will be will be artfully turned into a saga of bravery and sacrifice in the face of certain and utter defeat that will spur further generations of young Welsh men to throw their lives into the meat grinder of war!
