Battle results for Rayy:
Khurasanians (Edmund) 29/42 vs Abbasids (Londo) 60/60
Edmund 10.0
Londo 6.9
These men from Khurasan are tough customers, who bring their own swords and their own dice to a battle. Their archery is devastating and even the Khurasan markermen put up a showing beyond what could be expected of them. The Khurasan right wing got the better of the opposition (which I don't think is supposed to happen) and progress in the centre was quick until Paul's clever play enabled the Abbasid cavalry and second line infantry to stabilise the position. But by then the points were well progressed.

Thanks for the game Paul

Fontenoy

Londo (Lothair) 51/84 - Ian (L/C) 76/74

So where was Marechal de Saxe, the Gardes Francaises, the Black Watch, the Irish Brigade? You really should do better research into these famous battles, Fogman! ;)

ROUND 25: CHRISTIAN EMPIRES, ROMAN RIVALS

When Otto I revived the imperial title in the West in 962, he did so as Roman emperor, thus challenging Constantinople as heir to classical Rome. Both empires were in their dynamic phase and on the offensive. Two large battles were the result of this age of Christian imperial assertiveness.

DOROSTOLON 971
The entente against Bulgaria between Constantinople and Kiev took an unexpected turn when the latter totally overcame the Bulgars in 967-969. With the Rus becoming a major force in the northern Balkans, the alliance unravelled and war became inevitable. In 971, Ioannes Tzimiskes the new emperor, led the Roman army north, culminating in a series of battles before Dorostolon (previously known as the birthplace of Aetius) where Roman cataphracts were to prove their worth against the compact mass of Rus infantry.

STILO 982
Otto II marched into southern Italy to assert his sovereignty as Roman emperor over the Lombard principalities and Byzantine territories. Campaigning in the deep south, he instead was confronted by a large raid by Muslim forces from Sicily. Not since Vandal times have men from Germany confronted the Berbers of North Africa.

My comment two weeks ago certainly wasn't an attack on scholarship, but rather meant as a little joke on the name of the battle. I only knew about the reasonably famous 18th century battle. Hadn't even heard of Fontenoy 841 - even though it had (according to Wikipedia) about three times more combatants than Fontenoy of 1745!

Dark ages military history is terra incognita for almost all wargamers, I think. All I know of battles in Western Europe are Tours, Stamford Bridge, Hastings. So many thanks for shining some light on this under-appreciated era! :D

Lechfeld

Londo (Magyars) 23/40 - Ian (Franks) 43/42

Tettenhall

Londo (Danes) 37/60 - mcfcivo (Anglo-Saxons) 48/48

Thanks to my opponents, and I hope everyone had a great holiday season, without too much disruption from the current plague!

Lechfeld

Londo (Franks) 38/42 - Fogman (Magyars) 41/40

Tettenhall

Londo (Anglo-Saxons) 44/48 - Edmund (Danes) 59/60

Edmund's impact foot let him down - maybe some drug-fuelled berserkir had eaten too many of the magic mushrooms? But most of the loot bearers got away. A Danish clash of arms marker held out just long enough for the time limit to expire, and the game to end in a draw.

To both opponents: thanks, well played!
