Classical Antiquity Division D, just wow!

Post by stockwellpete » Thu Feb 13, 2020 8:47 am

Division D of Classical Antiquity has already passed its 2nd Time Control check, which is due at the half-way stage (after 5 weeks) of the tournament! 21 of the 45 matches have been completed and Swuul has already finished all his 9 matches!

Incredible really, as I haven't begun to think about the first Time Control check (at 3 weeks) yet. Well done chaps. :D

the problem is, now we have nothing to do for eight weeks. I'm slowing down starting my remaining games to make make them last.

Division D

grumpydaddy845(Viking 780-899AD) beat Brenmusik(Welsh 600-1049AD) 40-5

This was pretty one sided with the Welsh proving to be too brittle to stand against the Viking shield wall.
The story of their (brief) lives.

Their defeat, however, will be will be artfully turned into a saga of bravery and sacrifice in the face of certain and utter defeat that will spur further generations of young Welsh men to throw their lives into the meat grinder of war!

After the league matches are done, we have to set up friendly matches to test out things. I know for sure I need to learn how to counter those darn samnite medium infantries :?

Sounds good. The Samnites are beasts! I was amazed at how much carnage they inflict on the initial charge. I'm still battling it out, but I did find that they eventually mellow out. Bomber23 was absolutely crushing me early (like he tore my arm off and then proceeded to beat me with it!) and now it looks like I'll still lose but not as badly as it once seemed. If we have a friendly match, can I be the Samnites? :)

If any of you feisty Div D folk want a practice match, I'm up for it as Div A is proceeding at nice slow and stately pace. Practice games are much less stressful than League games.

The Samnites are pretty dangerous - but if you can survive that first charge, you'll usually be fine if you're using heavy infantry with pikes or offensive spears.

The offensive spearmen haven't enough power to beat them. Even on a hill like my battle. Maybe you should set a trap...

Depends on the Samnites. The veteran samnites will require either an average pike or a veteran hoplites to defeat in melee (if they survive the impact). Heavy infantry in the open have a +1 to cohesion that can offset the impact penalty, and then the medium foot penalty of the samnites can hurt them if they start losing in melee. The best units to beat down the Veteran Samnites are the high tier pikes and Roman cohorts. Combo of superior or better morale to resist the impact, and then armor or deep pike to beat them down. Of course, they are much more expensive than veteran Samnites, which is the real problem. Mid-cost superior impact foot are one of the best values out there for infantry. They are competitive on impact with more expensive units, while having the morale to survive multiple turns in melee.

The non-veteran version can be dealt with my normal hoplites in the same fashion, because they have 100 POA in melee, while the basic Samnites will only have 50.

Division D

Macedonczyk(Arab Conquest) beat Grumpydaddy845(Viking) 42:10

An interesting battle in which I had to use 200% of my brain to block the huge forces attacking my left wing and at the same time manage to eliminate the centre of the enemy before my even weaker right wing would allow Huscarls and shieldwalls to pass.
I awoke again last night in a cold sweat screaming "Veteran Muslim Spearmen."

Pete my 1 point comes from a close loss and not a draw so I should be 1 win and 4 losses.

(Thanks - corrected now. stockwellpete)
