Division C

edb1815 (Thracian w/ Antigonid ally) defeated Tresantes (Pyrrhic) 63% - 41%

GG to my opponent well played. There was not a lot of rough terrain for the Thracian medium infantry to hide in. Relying on numbers and cavalry to out flank the line of Pyrrhic pike phalanx. IN the early going the pikes rolled on and smashed through the center of the Thracian line held my heavy infantry from the Antigonid ally. Thracian peltasts could not stand up to the pikes and routed left and right. Then the Antigonid elephant routed things were looking grim for the Thracians. The Pyrrhic advanced scattered their line and the Thracians held cavalry superiority which was crucial to the outcome. The Thracian cavalry was able to regroup and get to critical points flanking several pike units. This proved to be the difference in the end, and a massed line of Thracian skirmishers routed the Pyrrhic elephant with missile fire. (The screen shows the turn after the elephant was put to flight).

Thanks to my worthy opponent I now have the Elephant Bane steam achievement!

phoyle3290 - Carthaginian (Hannibal in Italy) 216-203 defeats Najanaja - Pontic 110-85 BC - 63-51

Crazy match that swung back in forth. He was up 59-55 a couple turns before the end. Great battle, Najanaja!

Division C

Karvon (Sarmatians) defeated DzonVejn (Saka with Seleucid ally) 60-37 for a 4-0 win.

Our horse armies first bumped into each other in a mountain pass and then a dense forest before finally finding a more relatively more reasonable field of battle, though even it was far from welcome; both our flanks were dominated by large woods and the right sector further restricted by a series of steep rough hills beyond the trees. Behind these hills was a large forest blocking off most of the Saka left flank. Never-the-less it was an improvement on our initial encounters. (we agreed to reroll the first two fields).

We deployed a division of irregular foot in the forest on our right screened by light foot. The rest of our light foot we deployed along the edges of the forests on our left. We deployed four divisions of lancers supported by a couple of skirmishing horse in the center between the forests.

The Saka had a horde of light and heavy horse archers spread across their front with a few light foot covering the hills on our right. They also had elephant supporting some heavier horse in reserve.

We swung three divisions of lancers out wide to the left then swept in on the Saka forcing them towards the hills and forests, while one served a blocking force of sorts in the center. Our lights and medium on the right advanced out the forest and swept over the facing hills coming in on the flank of the advancing Saka horde and catching some of those evading our lancers coming from our left. We lost a number of lancers to the Saka horse archers and elephant, but managed to catch and crush enough of them between our two pincers to secure the victory.

Division D

SLancaster (Indo-Greek 175 BC-10 AD with Indian 500 BC- 319 AD allies) defeated bomber23 (Syracuse 412-281BC with Kyrenean Greek ally). 51-16.

The game was closer than the score. Main lines met and I managed to get some advantageous ground. My elephants did well and my pikes pushed back the hoplites. I got some good rallies at the end to get the win.

Division D

SawyerK (Roman 196-106 BC with Spanish ally) defeated R2Excelsior Roman (105-25 BC) by 46-21.

It was a very tough battle and the old Romans benefited from a number of favorable battle rolls. The also gained traction when they placed six medium troops on the right flank to contest rough terrain vs. four from the new Romans. Thanks for the game!

Weekly round-up
Little change in Division A this week except for at the bottom where Triarii (Hannibal in Italy) registered 2 wins to move up towards mid-table. MorkinTheFree (Pontic) remains anchored at the foot of the table despite getting his first win of the season. herm (Roman) has moved to the top of Division B despite suffering his first defeat in his seventh match. His closest challenger is Morbio (also Roman) who has 4 wins from 5 matches. At the bottom Najanaja (Pontic), oscarius (Thracian Hellenistic) and Ulysisgrunt (Jewish) desperately need points now to avoid the drop. Karvon (Sarmatian) has moved up into second place in Division C to challenge current leader edb1815 (Thracian Hellenistic) but the main threat is likely to come from fikabo (Jewish) who has 3 wins from 3 starts. Schweetness101 (Hannibal in Africa) is closer to winning Division D in his first season in the FOG2DL after Questar17 (Carthaginian) narrowly lost a second match in 5 starts. Questar17 can still get to 29 points if he wins his last 4 matches without dropping a point, but Schweetness101 just needs a scoring draw in his last match against cromlechi (Egyptian) to secure automatic promotion. SLancaster (Indo-Greek) can reach 28 points if he wins his last match but cannot now overtake Schweetness101 as he was defeated in their match together.

Unbeaten runs of 3 matches or more
Geffalrus (Division A) 7 matches
harveylh (Division A) 3 matches
Sennacherib (Division A) 3 matches
desertedfox (Division B) 3 matches
batesmotel (Division C) 3 matches
edb1815 (Division C) 5 matches
fikabo (Division C) 3 matches
Karvon (Division C) 5 matches
SLancaster (Division D) 3 matches

Match completion rate (45 matches in total to be played in each division)
Division A - 32 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division B - 30 out of 45 matches completed :D
Division C - 23 out of 45 matches completed :|
Division D - 34 out of 45 matches completed :D

Divisions A, B and D have very good match completion rates; Division C is OK.

Player of the week
SLancaster (Division D) with 3 wins this week. :D

Div D

cromlechi - Egyptian 405-343 BC defeats SLancaster - Indo-Greek 175 BC-10 AD with Indian 500 BC- 319 AD allies 60 -49

Very close game. The Indo Greek Elephants soaked up a lot of Egyptian arrows at the start of the game and the Pike Phalanx became isolated in the centre and were forced to form squares for a period of the battle. Egyptian numbers just edged it in the end.

Div C

General Shapur - Spanish 300-10 BC defeats DzonVejn - Saka 300 BC-50 AD with Seleucid 166- 125 BC ally 61:47

Hard to chase the horse army down with foot troops, mid-game it turned into a brawl where the dice decided the outcome more than strategy.
