31st October 2007 - Field of Glory Pre-Orders!

We're pleased to announce we are now taking pre-orders for the Field of Glory gaming system and the first 5 companion books.

Field of Glory is a new historical tabletop miniatures gaming system for anyone interested in recreating the battles of Rome, Greece or the Holy Land, among others. This series is intended to give both beginner and expert gamers everything they need to play the battles of ancient and medieval eras on their tabletops. Tested and created by gaming experts, this series includes a rulebook detailing the gaming system, and companion army books which help players select and build their historically accurate army with the relevant units or troop types they want to take onto the field of battle. The striking Field of Glory rulebook includes color coding for easy navigation, clear photographs of miniatures and diagrams (showing rules examples, troop placements, scale considerations and more), detailed Osprey artwork, a comprehensive painting guide, an overview of the history of this world of warfare, organization tables and a background to the men who fought on the ground. Containing two ready to use army lists, this rulebook can either stand alone and be used for immediate gaming, or can be combined with the companion volumes to recreate a more diverse range of conflicts.

If you are new to tabletop miniatures gaming you can find out more details on wikipedia. What this doesn't tell you however is the friendship and fun that can be had while enjoying a good wargame. Then you have the chance to re-live the battle down the pub afterwards!

29th October 2007 - Announced : Great Battles of the Middle Ages!

THE HISTORY CHANNEL® GREAT BATTLES VIDEO GAME SERIES CONTINUES

THE HISTORY CHANNEL® and SLITHERINE are to Develop THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of the Middle Ages

Epsom, 12th October 2007,

Following the success of THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of Rome video game, THE HISTORY CHANNEL and Slitherine Strategies announce the development of a new title in the series, THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of the Middle Ages. The game will feature a new engine optimized for next generation consoles and will be released in 2008.

“The huge commercial success of our first release has pointed us in the right direction,” said Iain McNeil, Director of Slitherine. “For us it’s a fresh challenge to develop a game that will embrace new audiences of the next-gen consoles. It’s also an opportunity to listen to the community of thousands of players we established with THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of Rome. We are sure we will match their expectations with the release of our next title.”

The new title is based on the story of the Hundred Years War and will release next year. It will feature a completely new graphic engine and a totally new game play system that will allow the player to be in complete control of massive armies. From the thunderous charge of the knights to the men-at-arms fighting for their lives in hand-to-hand combat, the game will recreate the epic feel of medieval battles, featuring thousands of characters simultaneously.

THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of the Middle Ages will integrate film clips from THE HISTORY CHANNEL programming library.

"The success of THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of Rome was the result of close collaboration between Slitherine Strategies and THE HISTORY CHANNEL," added Carrie Trimmer, Director of Licensing at A&E Television Networks, parent company of The History Channel. ”The combination of an innovative game engine and contextual programming content made for truly experiential gameplay. We anticipate even greater success with this new title.”

"Our licensing relationship with THE HISTORY CHANNEL allows us to maintain focus on the accurate historical detail that we always aim for," said JD McNeil, Business Development Director of Slitherine. "We know how difficult it is to create a game that is not only accurate from a historical perspective, but also allows players to enjoy exciting and compelling game play. With a decade of successful launches, we’re confident that we can give players the gaming experience they require from us."

The game follows on the release of THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles of Rome earlier this year which has topped the charts in 5 European countries on the PlayStation® 2, PSP® and PC DVD Rom formats.

24th October 2007 - Wargamer Loves Commander - Europe at War!

We've just seen another amazing review of COmmander - Europe at War posted over at the Wargamer.com. Bill Trotter certainly has fallen in love with the game!

"What I think is this: Commander: War in Europe is a stone gas of a game, a real sweetheart title that should woo new multitudes to the wargaming genre just as Panzer General did in days of yore.

And this old-timer, having discharged his responsibilities as a reviewer, can’t wait to get back into the epic campaign he set aside so he could turn in his promised copy sometime before next Thanksgiving—at which time, he strongly suspects, this game will still reside on his hard drive.

Remember when wargames were fun? The very talented gentlemen who designed this game certainly do."

17th October 2007 - Pocket History: Rome Announced

HISTORY IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND
THE HISTORY CHANNEL® and Slitherine are back together with a new project.

Epsom, 4th October 2007,

THE HISTORY CHANNEL® and Slitherine Strategies are proud to announce the expansion of their licensing relationship. Plans call for the creation of a new product line, THE HISTORY CHANNEL® Pocket History, a new series of games developed for the Nintendo DS game platform.

These new titles will extend the mission and core legacy of both companies to bring history to a wider audience. THE HISTORY CHANNEL Pocket History product line will feature a specific historical period for each release. Iain McNeil, Director of Slitherine, said, "Our objective with the release of the Pocket History series is to bring creative and inventive gameplay, that is easy to pick up and learn, to the next generation of portable gaming platforms. As always we are concentrating our efforts on creating a product that is both historically accurate and innovative and will really suit the DS platform."

The Pocket History series will begin with the release of THE HISTORY CHANNEL Pocket History: Rome in April 2008, with further products launching worldwide later in 2008.

"We are very pleased to join forces with Slitherine for THE HISTORY CHANNEL Pocket History series, the second product line we have developed together," added Carrie Trimmer, Director of Licensing at A&E Television Networks, parent company of The History Channel. “Following the success of THE HISTORY CHANNEL Great Battles console series, we wanted to design a game specifically for the Nintendo DS that would take advantage of its unique features, especially its portability. We think gamers will respond favorably to this new series.”

THE HISTORY CHANNEL Pocket History: Rome puts the player in control of the Roman Empire, building and extending its cities, governing the population and exploiting its resources. The player must also manage the economy and of course take command of the Roman military machine. Through conflict, diplomacy, economic and social growth, the player will increase the power of the Empire following the path of the most successful military empire in history.

The title will also feature fun-to-play mini games inspired by Ancient Roman culture, as well as an embedded encyclopedia that enriches the playing experience with historical resources on the subject.

"We strive to innovate, as always," said Marco Minoli, Marketing Director of Slitherine. "The market keeps offering 'me-too' games and competing with the same kinds of products with the same old style of gameplay. At Slitherine we have always tried to offer a different approach and to create something entirely new. Our audience has always appreciated this. With THE HISTORY CHANNEL Pocket History series we are continuing along this path, inspired by the exceptional sales results of The History Channel Great Battles of Rome."

1st October 2007 - Slitherine & the EU Commission

Last week Slitherine were in talks with the European Union Directorate-General Press and Communication, the European School Net and the Interactive Software Federation of Europe on the use of games as an educational tool. It's important to highlight to government officials the good side of gaming and its uses in a modern society, as our industry is often under attack. The meetings are a sign of how seriously the games industry is being taken these days. It's also an indication of how high Slitherine's profile has risen in the last few years. The meetings were very productive and we hope to see something fruitful develop from them.

Here are a couple of photos of the Slitherine team in Brussles. Note the non standard clothing - we were told jeans and T-Shirts did not cut it at the EU!
