Re: I am in love again.

Agreed that there's no point in engaging in pro- or anti-Soviet diatribes but, seeing as the topic includes Soviet women at war, I hope no one objects to posting links to a couple articles by Dr. Reina Pennington. One is about Soviet servicewomen in general and the other is specifically about pilots...

"At the Elbe" by Fred Small is not the greatest tune, either, but the lyrics are powerful and it hits on the same subject of Western and especially American under-appreciation of the Red Army's war effort.

Re: I am in love again.

Her husband Ivan Boiko also survived the war. They divorced in the 1950s but continued to meet at veterans' gatherings. He passed away in 1995, a year before she did. A higher-ranking female Soviet tanker was Captain Aleksandra Samusenko. She served in a Soviet tank battalion which US Army Sgt. Jose...

Re: Revolution / Civil War

Yeah, I could see there being some potential for the Russo-Japanese War, although there are some aspects that would be problematic (such as the fact that most of the warships of the Russian Navy's First Pacific Squadron bottled up in Port Arthur were disabled by Japanese land-based artillery. IIRC, ...

Re: Revolution / Civil War

I guess that the game engine could be used to cover any time period in theory, although it would probably suit Napoleonic, medieval, or even ancient battles given that those have more unit diversity than the US Civil War had. The American Civil War did not really feature "light" or "heavy" infantry....

Re: Revolution / Civil War

If you were talking about the Russian or Chinese Revolutions and Civil Wars, those might work. However, an operational level wargame like OoB would not really be appropriate to either the American War for Independence or the US Civil War. Better to hope some company does an updated take on Civil War...

Re: OOB & Panzer Corps 1 - Strikingly Similar

Any similarities are largely skin deep. I really had a tough time going back to Panzer Corps after playing OoB. The whole supply line mechanic is just one example. If you play PC as though you need to worry about keeping an open supply route, you'll probably fall behind in reaching objectives fast e...

Re: The Red Army strikes back! Order of Battle: Red Steel has been announced

Great news! Any chance of this growing to be a "quadrilogy"? Kursk to Berlin (and Manchuria?) is a lot of ground to cover in the third installment.

Re: Great War version

I think OoB would need some significant adjustment to its gameplay mechanics to simulate the Great War. For one, entrenchment would have to be more significant, semi-permanent, and allow for rotated units to maintain the entrenchment levels on the hex they move into (sort of like Commander: The Grea...

Re: ‘41-‘43 soviet dlc wishlist

1. I'd like to add my voice to those hoping to see more historically accurate icons for Soviet Infantry rather than generic ones that were cut and pasted in from prior DLCs. 2. Along the same lines, I think AI controlled Soviet factions should get their own icon/roundel (as do comparable Japanese, G...

Re: ‘41-‘43 soviet dlc wishlist

Obviously the best use of citizen militia will be in battle for Berlin in ‘45, I guess the last scenario of Soviet trilogy... I though there already was Volksgrenadier and/or Volksturm units in EndSieg, but I don't remember offhand. In the Soviet case it would be Narodnoe Opolcheniye (People's Mili...

Re: Order of Battle: NOT WW2

I'd enjoy a couple of Korea themed DLCs, as well (would want to play as both the ROK/US/UN and North Korea/China), but I think expanding beyond WWII should coincide with the development of OoB 2.

Re: Next DLC?

Really glad they decided to give the Red Army equal attention as the Wehrmacht by making this the first part of a trilogy. Молодец, Artistocrats! I still think having a Poland scenario is a bit of a waste (at least historically speaking) but it could be interesting if it is presented as a sort of ra...

Re: Join the beta for the new DLC of Order of Battle!

I signed up and am hoping to get a chance to help test this. I apparently did not get selected for the beta of Panzer Corps 2 (at least not yet) but would honestly prefer Red Star in any case.

Re: Next DLC?

kondi's "Deep Operations" idea is a good one and would accurately represent the role and function of mid-to-late war Red Army tank corps and tank armies. A similar concept would have likewise represented the German panzer divisions in the Blitzkrieg's heyday. These formations outran their supply lin...

Re: Next DLC?

Kondi's list covers the most significant campaigns, has a sort of geographic continuity, and I personally would have no problem at all if that exact list was announced. That said, I think it unlikely. There's a good chance the scenarios which are ultimately selected may jump around a little to inclu...

Re: Next DLC?

Getting back to the future of Order of Battle, I think it may indeed be (unfortunately) likely that only one Red Army DLC will be released. I can't predict all possible developments coming still, so this is not a set-in-stone thing, but the plan for now is not to get over with the Red Army in just ...

Re: Next DLC?

Regarding sources, John Erickson's two volumes (Road to Stalingrad and Road to Berlin) as well as David Glantz's and Jonathan House's When Titans Clashed have withstood the test of time. While much of the "scholarship" coming from Russian government sources is very politicized and ought to be read s...

Re: Next DLC?

I like the idea of including pre-Barbarossa battles but am equally concerned about overdoing it on these. Past DLCs have been limited to 8-12 scenarios, and unless the Red Army will get three DLCs dedicated to it like the Wehrmacht did I would not want to see more than 3 or 4 battles with the Japane...
