The Cities of Gold army list book (for Field off Glory Renaissance) covers a lot of Western African armies from 1500 onwards. I have no idea if the research in that book is up to date, or if they are at all relevant to the pre 1500 armies, but they might make a good basis for medieval army lists.

Because of the original rules, cataphracts have a reduction POA cancelling ability of steady spear/pike. Other mounted Swordsmen have 0 POA vs steady pike/spearmen, but cataphracts have 50. Maybe I should change the original rules, either by removing this ability of cataphracts or giving the fully ...

That's basically how I got my best result. While I did use couple MAA's worth of points on crossbowmen and light foot to delay half of the enemy, I otherwise routed majority of the enemy non-spearmen units before committing to the impact exchange with the bulk of the LC Spearmen. However, if these troops were described by Greeks as "hoplites", then it's not unreasonable to assume that they were equipped very similarly to Greek hoplites, who usually (always?) wore a helmet.
