Re: Unit upgrades in WW2

One of the plus points about getting older is that you have had more time to read and learn about stuff. Military stuff has always been an interest of mine, ever since I started building model kits as a child. I recently bought a book on the German infantryman by Haynes* (better known for their car ...

Re: Unit upgrades in WW2

And...to bring it back to Panzer Corps....great job on their part for having a higher SA value for the German Infantry. Those crew served german machine guns provided great support (high rate of fire) at the squad and platoon level. Much better than the US equivalent (the Browning Automatic Rifle) ...

Re: Unit upgrades in WW2

I can't quote sources directly but there have been a number of studies of the causes of casualties in WW2, mostly for US divisions. The main finding was that artillery was the biggest cause of casualties. You can't get much more impersonal that turning dials and feeding shells into an artillery gun....

Re: Advanced difficulties and the air force.

I'm currently in early 45 in my first serious playthrough of GC East and only at my usual field marshal difficulty. At this difficulty I have been able to deal with the Russian aircraft without too much trouble. Largely because I have spent significant prestige on having the best units (currently 4 ...

Re: Unit upgrades in WW2

Do you reward your best, experienced, units with new equipment or do you assign the newest, most modern, equipment to less experienced, greener units. The experienced units “deserve it” and could go from being a good unit to a great unit if given the most modern equipment. However, the greener unit...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Another tough one. Again, I lost prestige overall between starting Goldap and starting the next scenario (about 1400), despite a decisive victory. The reason is taking replacements during the scenario. I find it difficult to avoid although I try to only do so for moderately damaged units ( seriously...

Re: Unit upgrades in WW2

The true cost of upgrading a unit depends on what is actually required to be done. The cost of upgrading a complete Russian tank regiment, both in game and in real life, from T34/41's to T34/43's is pretty minimal. Obviously you have to replace all the tanks and some upgrading of the supply chain fo...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Goldap After repairing units, upgrading the last couple of gebirgs to 43 grenadiers and disbanding surplus units, I have 25442pp, a net loss of 1650pp for Budapest 44. My core now consists of 61 ordinary and 7 SE units. 34 slots available for this scenario and one more SE unit to get. I currently h...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Well, that was not pleasant. By the end I had made a breakthrough in the south and captured all the VH's there. I had also eliminated the Soviet units in Budapest. The problem was the north where I did not have enough infantry for the terrain and came up well short. The weather was pretty favourable...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

From the restart things went a little better. The screenshot is the strategic map at the start of my turn 10. I am hoping that the Soviets only have one more wave of armour waiting in the East. If I can finish off what you can see before it hits then I can deal with it. If they have more then it wil...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

I restarted the scenario. I just lost Lent in a FW190G to 3 Soviet fighters. His escorting ME262 took the first one out but he was down to 10 str after getting hit by AA fire and the other two killed him. That rather sucks so, given the situation in the south, I decided to put that one down to exper...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Screenshot of my current problem. I was doing OK in the south as the weather was not frozen and I was slowly eliminating the Soviet units at the crossings. Then it froze and they all piled across the river. I have some light opposition in the north but I will eliminate that pretty quickly. The quest...

Re: question on strategic map

If you look carefully the cities that count towards victory have gold edges around their circles on the strategic map. As you may have noticed, those same cities have gold borders around their flags in normal view.

Call up the briefing notes and review the victory requirements regularly as you play.

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Yes, that mirrors my experience. I am at turn 10, halfway through, and the Soviets who moved into the eastern part of Budapest have been taken out by a combination of artillery and pioniere. In the north the Soviet armour is all gone and I am about to advance there and in Budapest. The problem is th...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Budapest 44 After restoring OS, I had 31414pp. That seems to be good. The ME262 is available for a fairly pricey 713pp and I decided to take a gamble and upgrade Barkhorn from a ME109K and the other three historical aces from FW190D9's all to 262's. I am hoping that will keep my air force competiti...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Finally got back to playing this again. So, Return to Kishinev. Started with 29121pp. The only viable strategy here that I could get anywhere with was to abandon the victory objectives nearest the Soviets and throw everything at the Romanians to clear the entire SW corner of the map. That went OK, l...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Thanks. I had started to think about crushing the Romanians then turning back against the Russians. Will give it a go and see how it works out.

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

I have made several attempts at Return to Kishinev and abandoned them within a few turns. Either I am doing something fundamentally wrong or I have misread the scenario. I suspect I need a radical strategy here to get a DV. I will have to think about that or whether to aim to crush the Romanians, co...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Well, I had to pause most of my computer gaming for a while for personal reasons. Unfortunately that has meant nothing to add to this thread for several weeks. I have now been able to resume and have just completed Warsaw. It was actually slightly tricky as I had pretty much forgotten what was going...
