Re: Beginner's Guide Video Series

These videos might be dangerously out of date given that I have not been active in the game for a very long time now. I am probably going to take these down unless RBS wants them still up. I still get random comments on them from time to time and I am afraid I may be passing on outdated information.

Div 3.

MikeC (Carthaginian) def roguedjack (Lombard) 62-36

Tight game till the end when Raw Spears started unraveling for the Lombards. 3 x Elephants kept Lancers in check most of the game.

Re: Passive vs Active Defence

For the “stats of draws” in some tournaments , I’ll opine this. What isn’t known or quantifiable is when player x basically tells player y unless “z happens, it’s a draw”. Player y “complies” if only to get an actual game in, usually at some tactical disadvantage. A win or loss here obviously is no...

Re: Passive vs Active Defence

I have given one example where I think a player is perfectly justified in fighting an ultra-defensive battle - if a draw means that they can prevent their opponent overtaking them in the table right at the end of a season. That is a tactical decision for that player in those very specific circumsta...

Re: Passive vs Active Defence

Mike that is totally untrue saying it is a cultural. I have played in a number of US Opens and know most of your US National team. Not one of them would agree with what you have just said. Strategic cautiousness is a valid and widely used tactic. There is variation within any given culture and anec...

Re: Higher Ground POA

Yes but only when the normal PoA factors don't give you at least 50 PoA. Imagine Off Spears charging Impact Foot on a downhill slope of less than 100 height. That is a net -75 PoA from any angle. But if you charge from the rear, the game will see that you have -75 PoA which is less than +50 and then...

Re: Impact

As Paul stated in the other thread, it is still going to be +50 PoA. Even if it was +75, I don't think it would knowing the answer would satisfy you regarding what happened to your spears.

If you really care about the stats, I'll clean up my spreadsheet and PM it to you.

Re: Passive vs Active Defence

Rather just play a series of games with the assumption that both sides are trying to win the battle at hand. This is the crux of the issue. It is obvious that players are not in agreement here on this. When ties are allowed, it creates situations where metagaming can happen because you can play to ...

Re: Legio Palatina price anomaly

This anomoaly is because the "fix" for things like old 51 point Jewish Zealots as well as the old 48 point Roman Auxiliaries that we ended up settling on was a bit of a hack. When a more generalized system was applied to try and make them work across the board, it distorted other things li...

Just one more result, and we post final standings. I think I'll start the next one after I finish the Chaos Tournament. I committed earlier to help Schweet test his mod in his tournament and give feedback as well so my plate is kind of full atm.

Re: Routing Mechanics

Too often the only difference in such a situation are simply points. And that's gamey. There shouldn't really be any chance for a routed unit to rally. Maybe off the field, but certainly not on the field. If it's been broken, it's broken. You have the cart in front of the horse here. It isn't gamey...

Re: Impact

I suppose my issue is that I find it very difficult to justify some of RBS' abstractions and their manifestations into a "rule" in my own head. So going back to where we started. My question "Does it make sense that a steady unit of hoplites should fragment when it hits another hopli...

Re: Impact

Hello TheGrayMouser, I still can’t figure out why some players lobby for toning down in-game effects, such as those of flank charges. The FoG2/P&S/SJ series is so much better with strong effects. +1 The game is exciting because of the possibility of strong and unplanned effects. This is what ma...
