Re: Southern League - Central London

Sorry I couldn't make it in the end.
How did the compulsory average horse experiment work out?
Did they prove a liability? Did they just hide? Did people gamble with them? Or did people find some other clever use for them?

Need a double room for Britcon?

Would anybody be interested in buying a double room at the IBIS for Friday and Saturday night off us? We paid £168 for both nights for a no-refund deal, although would consider whatever offers people made. Better breakfast than the Days Hotel, apparently! I was going to bring my wife to Manchester t...

Re: UK FoGR Competition scene heading for a crash?

A view from the bottom: "Mounted armies being un historical" point... Of course there are historical versions... E.g. Mongols/Tatars and their off spring.. So a min % foot restriction would knock these armies out... When I start to believe ranking/podium is more important than dice/toys and armies ...

Re: Derby World Teams 4th/5th October 2014

There's no virtue in allowing all lists to be chosen. 'More choice' paradoxically means you end up with less real variety. True, although you probably don't get more variety within the tournament by having tighter themes, but you do get more variety between one tournament and another - which is goo...

Re: Derby World Teams 4th/5th October 2014

Another question re pool 2 ... Does the restriction mean "at least 50% of foot troops must be average/poor and at least 50% of mounted must be average/poor" (this is what I think it means) Or does it mean "at least 50% of foot and mounted (i.e. together) must be average/poor"? Moro's question is a g...

Re: Southern League FOG R 2014 at Oxford

I used a version of the Later Roys that had only 1 p & s and lots of 6 pack superior commanded out musket plus firelocks and 5 unarmoured mostly superior cavaliers. Thanks. Interesting to hear. Lots of us took that army ... I think the flexibility of being able to have lots of shot-only foot was a ...

What did Jim do to get 3 big wins in the comp?
Even though a lot of games didn't finish decisively, they were still interesting.

Re: Southern League FOG R 2014 at Oxford

Yes, thank you very much, Bob.
Enjoyed the theme. Had three well contested games against well matched enemies. Definitely like the format of pre-set terrain and three games in one day.
I've hit a run of good dice so far this year. It's more fun that actually having to be skilful!

Re: Derby World Teams 4th/5th October 2014

Early Western: This is an interesting idea, which might see armies using something other than Swiss keils (which seems to have become the norm in this sub-period). It would be nice if this could include English and Scots armies (which offer an interesting variant in their foot, but which can't have ...

Re: R&R for BHGS Challenge

I think this weekend showed that it isn't the mounted armies that are unbalancing the game, it's Alasdair. I suspect he could turn up with something mainly foot and still shred us. Simon had an almost identical army and didn't even manage mid table mediocrity, RBS had a wholly mounted army and Alas...

Re: Campaign 2014

On the Dutch independence period ... don't want to open a can of worms, but I have a few concerns that the list of armies is a little misconceived. The issue is there are 7 permitted armies. Two are allowed muskets, and so are much more viable. And of these two the Later Spanish are much better than...

Re: R&R for BHGS Challenge

What are we going to do about this guy?! Well, maybe he'll get fed up of winning by such a big margin and start bringing an army with some pedestrians!! I got him in this competition. For the first time I had the initiative, crowded the table with as much terrain as possible, tried to plug all the ...

Re: UK FoGR Competiton scene heading for a crash?

If what we are saying is that massed cavalry armies routinely beat late 17th C armies, Swiss, Tercios and the rest, with comparatively little risk of a reversal, then the implication is that either the points values or more likely the unit gradings are wrong. It could also be a question of the scen...

Re: 1700 to 1762

What base sizes are you thinking for this period? At Central London we have a very popular rule set called "King of the Battlefield", and it's very well established at the club. Units are all 3 bases, each 3cm wide. A base contains 4 or 6 foot, 2-3 horse. An artillery attachment is represented by a ...

Re: "Typical Army" Restrictions

The Southern League has just completed it's first year. I have played in the FoGR competition at both Britcon and Warfare for the last three years and just to bring us back to subject, it was after Warfare that Martin posted. He hasn't included the recent Southern League round in any of his follow ...

Re: "Typical Army" Restrictions

the only option I half agree with is to make armies have a minimum infantry for artillery mix. Which I think is the only one being seriously considered for trying out to be fair. [/quote] So where does this leave the discussion on D&G armies currently? I'm perfectly happy to give this infantry/arti...

Re: Army balance in competitions

There's another thread on army restrictions where quite a lot of people agreed on a restriction of having to bring 3 battle foot BGs for every 2 artillery bases (I think). Shome mishtake - 6 bases of foot battle troops per medium/heavy artillery base shurely? Poshibly ... I didn't look up the exact...
