Concerns about AI pathing for undrilled infantry
As far as I can tell, the AI is able to path its undrilled heavy foot in ways unavailable to the player. In the two screenshots I have attached (I am the vikings), showing the position at the end of my turn and then the position at the start of my next turn after the AI has moved, the AI has split i...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?
Apologies for the Necro. I went and read "The End of the Bronze Age" . While the author keeps calling the non close order, javelin swordsmen who he claims defeated chariot armies "skirmishers", upon closer inspection these are not light foot skirmishers at all. In game, these seems closer to Warrio...

Re: Infantry charging heavy cavalry?
Xenophon has a body of peltasts badly beating up Tisaphernes' horse Cunaxa. I recently read Robert Drews' book on the bronze age collapse, where his thesis is that the end of massed chariot warfare came about when they were completely outmatched by clouds of aggressive skirmishers who would shower ...

Re: Bug?
There is definitely something unintuitive about the movement costs. That levy skirmisher can do a "knight move" forward and over a square and finish with 2AP, and still be able to turn 360 degrees any direction it pleases, but a single diagonal has the aforementioned result.

Also getting this error on steam.
Edit: looking at steamDB, it looks like the "beta" branch was updated but the "openbeta" branch is still the build it had assigned a few months ago.

Re: Question about pike POA
Having played through a Pyrrhus v Romans campaign recently, my experience with fielding large numbers of regular and raw pikes reminds me of Zapp Brannigan from Futurama shouting "stop exploding you cowards!" as his army is obliterated.

Re: This is why it is hard to play even the best RTW2 mods!!!
Still, I pretty regularly play Fourth Age Total War, a Rome 1 mod. FATW is so good. Have you seen the Wainriders expansion they are working on? Its moving to the Alexander engine and set during the Third Age 1500 years or so prior to the book events. The factions in FATW minus the elves and orcs an...

Re: This is why it is hard to play even the best RTW2 mods!!!
I still play classic Rome Total War all the time. Especially modded.. the Restitutor Orbis mod came out in beta relatively recently after being in development for literally 10 years and I honestly think it and others like it are among the best examples of historical media out there, bar none. Sure i...

Re: New TT Mod version 1.5.18 now available!
Paul, I don't know if you take requests, but have you considered adding up-armoured legionaries with manica and multiple layers of torso armor as shown on the tropaeum traiani? They could be a fun addition.

Re: Iberian lack superior units
I don't know if it would make the spanish lists overpowered. It might make the carthaginian+spanish allies list overpowered if they got superior impact foot in addition to their other tools. Scutari are already very handy units at average quality.

Re: Peloponnesian War
Kagan's book is definitely worth a read. I would pick up The Landmark Thucydides, which is a heavily annotated (lots of very helpful maps) edition of Thucydides' history and read it alongside a modern work like Kagan's for best results. Alternatively, if you want something very military focused look...

Re: Impact
FOG1 had a much higher chance of either unit winning as opposed to a tie. Odds of losing on +1 POA in FOG1 was 20%. Odds of losing with just a quality advantage in FOG1 (which is represented in FOG2 was 50POA) was 28%. There was no impact advantage to flank (not rear) attacks in FOG1. You got a +1 a...

Re: Carolingian (Charlemagne) Armies
I would: Max out on Dism Lancers. They are the edge of your knife. Buy a bunch of reg. shieldwalls, don't attack with them unless you need to rescue a unit, the AI will usually attack into you anyway so you will be coming out cost-effective in these fights. I would skip raw shieldwalls a buy a peasa...

Re: 3218 hours in and my first real game gripe- fall back blocking
One could make a distinction between attacks initiated by the player and attacks initiated by the enemy. If I block my cavalry's line of retreat and to ensure they get stuck in, and give the charge order, then I get a cohesion test when they want to retreat but can't. If the enemy attacks my horse a...

Re: 3218 hours in and my first real game gripe- fall back blocking
Falling back on the spot would nerf pike units for one thing. They would be subject to additional impact rounds throughout the match, and losing a round against hastati/warband/etc and staying in combat is preferable to losing a round and then having to take another impact where you have lost deep p...

Re: No raw legions for 3rd century Romans?
The list in FOG 1 did allow for poor, average and superior Cataphracts in the Dominate lists (284-379) The poor ones were utterly useless! Competitively I wouldn't take them, but they were fun for themed games. I don't know if the performance of the late Roman heavy horse can be summed up really wi...

Re: No raw legions for 3rd century Romans?
Not really no. If you feel the list is appropriate then I trust your judgement!
I have a copy of Patrice Southern's book on the the third century but never got around to it. I think I'll move it up the reading list for some perspective on the matter.
Thank you for the response Richard.
