From memory but I think that you will find that the Spartans had 'regimental' shield designs. Dependant on where the unit was raised.

Planning to watch a game on Tuesday, I gather the opponents will be using some more combined arms type armies (Medieval anyhow). Sounds like combined arms to my Spartans!

Forgot to mension, by 50% completed do you mean that you have broken the opponents army. Is it easy to achieve the equivalent of a DBM 32-0? The Spartan Army I fielded broke on 14 points (Forget what this is called), I couldn't see my opponent getting any where near this. Infact I only lost 1 elemen...

We played on 6 x 4 with 15mm figures. I think we only played 2 hrs in the second game and if we played for 3 I think the Ilkhan's would be pushed off the table (DBM speak). My initial practice was with Spartans v's Romans again abit boring as a game, go forward and roll dice. If you get lucky your o...

I played my first 2 full games of FOG last night Spartan v's Ilkhanid. Used 8 x 6 at 800 pts. We got to the point in the first game that the Ilkhan's looked like they would suffer a big loss so stopped and the second they danced around the tablle doing little and we stopped the game after we ran out...

I agree with Agesilaus comment 'then who do we make Elite and why'.

I would doub't that a full study of this has been done as from what I have read of ancient sources a lot of work would be required to make a comparison across any reasonable length of time.

I will pick up lost battles when I am in the US about £ 11.00, at the moment I am looking at putting togather my Spartan army. Not sure if it will be 15mm or 25mm. Leaning towards 25mm

What would the definition of Roman conscripts be>. In most other periods of history professionals are generally better than conscripts. The only potential time that Elite hoplites would face pike to my knowledge was the sacred band are Chaeronea, I know little about the specifics of this battle apar...

Given that I don't know what the Elite Romans represent I can't guess on their opponents.

I think that from the modelling perspective the points cost isn't a consideration, thus would the model correct that these elite legions would simply destroy their opponents.

I can understand that, essential the grading is bases on game mechanices (though there is nothing wrong with this).

Out of interest how do the figures work out for these elite legionaries v's there historical opponents?

I am not an expert on the Slave revolt but I thought they defeated a proper Roman field army at some point. I would also say that the performance of the army is differant to the performance of its constitant parts. I know of Phil Sabins book but haven't read it, is he saying that Roman conscripts ar...

I think there are really three issues here : Troop Quality, Game Balance and Numbers. The spartan Hippeis was formed from the best of the spartiates, consequently are better than your 'average' Spartiate. Looking at their battlefield performance then one can note on the two occassions where things w...
