Best Roman game ever

Wow! I love this game. Once I took care of the stability issues I was having and got over the moderate learning curve, I began to understand what a deep and rich game it is. Check out my review on Metacritic: http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/alea-jacta-est

Re: Middle late Roman empire (3 to 6 century AD)

Of course I picked up AEGOD's Alea Jackta Est as soon as it was released. With the current scenario list stretching from 100BC to 200AD and more promised (including Trajan's Dacian Wars and the Crises of the Third Century AD), it appeared to be just the game I was looking for. The trouble is, it is ...

Re: Pandora - First Contact

I like what I see with Pandora so far. It sounds a lot like Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, but this is not necessarily a bad thing because Alpha Centauri was a great game. In any event I hope the factions in Pandora are as interesting and colorful as they were in AC. Anyway, I will be watching this gam...

I like most of the Battle of the Bulge. It is a difficult campaign but if you use proper tactics you will prevail. I also play to the minor objectives. So, for the opening game, I generally deploy forward but in depth. Make sure your 3 57mm guns have clear lines of fire. This one, "Hold Your Fire" ...

Nice reporting - I really appreciate you taking the time to write so nicely about this great game. I caught that mention of Sgt. Rock comics. I have a 6 year old just nuts over BA and I found the old Sgt Rock and Haunted Tank comics bundled into black and white reprints to feed his growing reading ...

Good tips of course Montagu. As sort of a corollary to what you wrote, I tend to agree with your disdain for AT guns. Although the self-propelled ones like the Marder are indeed great tank killers, they also tend to be rather vulnerable and have to be used with care and guarded against about everyth...

Thanks for the clarification guys. Having said that, I must confess that I've not yet played an individual scenario. IMHO it seems that the battles would be much more interesting when played as part of a campaign rather than as stand-alones, though again I do agree that many of the scenarios are ver...

A good topic. My favorite scenario: 1. Poland. From this the game begins. Nothing much to say;) 5. Kursk. During the tense situation from beginning to end. But I must point out the game for the Red Army did not impress. Because the Wehrmacht almost immediately buy six tigers in the central directio...

Fall Gelb - This one is loads of fun, and seems very close to history. You have flying columns doing a classic blitzkrieg in the south (Sedan), and a more traditional slug fest in the north at the Belgian forts. Fall Marita - The invasion of Yugoslavia and Greece is a fun land-sea-air side show batt...

Have to control the skies and control them well or you lose.
Couldn't agree more Texican. I just recruited two additional ME109's for a total of five in preparation for Sealion '40.

I think the key to winning decisive victories in the 1939-43 scenarios is to practice the true blitzkrieg tactic. That is, try to bypass enemy strong points wherever possible and make a beeline for the objective towns. Of course there are exceptions. Sometimes an enemy strong point is astride your l...

I just posted a review on Metacritic under 'NGResonanceFan' 8) FYI, their formatting doesn't seem to allow for paragraph breaks so my review is one large paragraph. In any event I gave the game a '9'. Also, I had wanted to put a review on Gamespot, but you have to be a subscription or a 'Level Three...

Gah! I keep going back and replaying #3 and I keep doing worse than the first time I played it, even though I now know more or less where the enemy troops are located. Go figure??? In my last attempt I lost my flamethrower; an absolutely essential unit to carryover to #5. Anyway, after playin...

Out of deference to our excellent hosts here at Slitherine I don't want to get too carried away about games from other publishers, but I definitely have my eye on these two upcoming releases: Unity of Command: The Stalingrad Campaign: http://unityofcommand.net/ This one may give Panzercorps a run fo...

Mars, I just thought about something .... Remember the PIAT teams? Have you had any PIAT teams reach Gold Elite Status (3-striper) ? It sure gives another (good) reason why #3 wants you to nurse them to #5. Yes, and as a matter of fact I was complaining early on in #5 that I had too many PIATs and ...

Ok Merr, understood. So you don't deploy to the houses on the right? Again, when I tried the scenario my guys in the fortifications on the right side of the hill got nailed big-time by the German infantry firing from the row of houses. It almost seemed like the hilltop fortifications were giving me ...

Wow Merr, I'm blown away! What you guys are talking about I guess is a very aggressive defense well-away from the vp squares on the fortified hill next to the bridge. Of course this would require a much larger force than I had on hand, though again it is my intention to backtrack two missions and re...

One more thing. Am I correct in assuming that in the Arnhem Counterattack (#5) that you do indeed need to fight for that row of houses just to the north of your starting position? I really should pay more attention to my compass, but I don't know which way was North..... Looking FROM the bridge, at...

Thanks guys for the info. Fortunately I do have a save from the beginning of #3 so I'm not SOL. :) In light of what you said about the extra credit victory conditions, I will indeed replay #3 with an eye on keeping my losses down rather than fulfilling those bonus victory conditions. One more thing....
