Re: Gebirgsjager

Some terrain can't be entered by units that have transport even if they could normally enter (thick forest for infantry and high mountain for alpine). I don't know if this applies to horse transports and to transports with alpine move (eg mules that are horse transport with alpine trait). I don't ha...

Re: Range.

I hadn't considered very long range SPArt (other than Stugs) due to the lower ammo on most SP units but a fast 5 range sp gun would make a very large part of the battlefield risky, at least for soft targets. There's always something new to learn.

Re: Range.

I've had 2 range heroes. They are very good for counter-battery and for suppressing AA,, also for forcing surrender of soft or lightly armoured units. While it's tempting to go for a big gun, these roles suit lighter guns with decent Rate of Fire since you want a lot of suppression rather than a few...

Re: GC Barbarossa to Berlin

Once you get to 3 or 4*, the +2 HA experience bonus starts to give AT an edge. For me, the biggest risk to Elefants is multiple infantry attacks stripping ammo. Maintaining artillery backing will make for a very tough unit. Do you have a particular arty backup or just whatever is nearby?

Re: Afrika Korps - Italian Challenge on Rommel

Nice plan getting for getting exp and heroes on your biplane. I think you have just created a biplane challenge with an ultimate goal of a 5* biplane that's never been upgraded.... I will be including Gladiators in my British mod, but the rate I'm going it will be 2025 by the time it's done so might...

Re: Afrika Korps - Italian Challenge on Rommel

Got to be impressed by someone using a biplane fighter at this stage AND aiming for 2*. That's kind of impressive no matter what prestige setting you are using.

Re: Self-restriction ideas to spice up a campaign?
Why would you ever change a Tiger to a Panther?
Excellent question - unfortunately the uninspiring answer is that I meant to write "Tiger or panther". Fortunately it was only a typing error rather than a playing error! Von Runstedt mode would be tough if not playing NIco's version ...

Re: GC DLCs upgrade project (GC Complete v3)

Nico's DLC variants add a lot of replay value and were very much appreciated recently when I was recovering from something recently andhad a lot of time on my hands for about 2 months. Thanks Nico.

Re: Self-restriction ideas to spice up a campaign?

Some things I've tried: Divison structure - typically each 4 or 6 units eg 2 inf a gun and an AT on foot (guns horsedrawn if you have a mod that allows horse transport) or motorised in trucks/mechanized in half tracks, Panzer division 2 tanks, 2 guns and two infantry. AA, Heavy guns, pioneers are Co...

That's an amazingly detailed post captainjack,
Wasn't it Mark Twain who wrote something like
"I apologise for the length of this letter - I didn't have time to write a shorter one"

Re: Need some help on hero attributes

The combat odds are determined by the difference between attack and defence not by the absolute value. Somewhere on this site is a full list of the odds for both direct attacks and indirect attacks (AA, Art, Strategic bombers) and explanations of the effect of initiative, weather etc.which may be of...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

An interesting write up, as I have been playing through43 recently. The Prokhorovka South East corner can be trouble. I once forgot to deploy any units there. Success elsewhere meant trouble when I had to divert troops to clear the south east later on. The gepard is a bit rubbish but because it is f...

Re: Semi historical attempt

I think that Tatsinskaya can be tough on any setting above sergeant. If I remembered to save before the choice of Stalingrad Ruins and Escape I might give Tatsinskaya a go and aim for the DV instead of watching the destruction of my army through 44.

Re: Semi historical attempt

Hi Goose2. I went for MV. My strategy was inspired by the Mushroom approach (I forgot who posted that particular AAR). In essence, head north to secure the topmost airfield and then spread along teh top and work back down. Last time I had got most of the way through and though "there's only two more...

Re: This game never ends... I suppose

And there's plenty of good quality free mods as well once you've run through all the official extensions, and tested out different settings or personal challenges.
I've been playing for ages and still enjoy it.

Re: Semi historical attempt

After reorganisation I ended up with the original 2 infantry units (one with an SE Marder 3H and one with an SE Nashorn). The trade off between the 88 gun, low ammo and 8 GD vs 75mm gun, 7 ammo and 13 GD is a tough one. I'm definitely looking forwards to the SE jagdpanthers becoming available. I end...

Re: Messina.

Actually, they turn against you the next scenario after Messina. I've often wondered if its the exact Italians from your core you have to fight, or just generic ones? That's something I hadn't thought of. I suppose you could test it by keeping one or more Italian units in your reserve until the Ita...

Re: Messina.

I agree with Proline and huckc. The fighter and tac bomber (which also has useful AA and good heroes) are both base 12 strength, and are much better than what you can buy. The Italian aux can be useful in the following two (maybe three) scenarios to fill spaces in the line and there are evacuation h...

Re: Semi historical attempt

Just finished 1942 East via Stalingrad Ruins. Not surprisingly, the Panzer 38t and Panzer 2Gs were struggling in 42 and the SE Panzer 2G was destroyed twice in the campaign, but is now up to 1* and hopefully heading for upgrade. Less fortunate was Rondorf in his 2G. I was putting off upgrading him u...

Re: Grand Campaign; Learning to use a diverse force.

Last time I tried Kursk South and didn't do so well. I'm about half way through Kotelnikovo, cursing the rain (more like Vyazma with the mud as well), and probably going to miss out on the KV1C, which is a shame. Assuming I get through to Kursk, I might give the northern branch a try. As for Rudel, ...
