Re: Evade-capable battle troops can turn 2x but not 1x???

In answer to my own question, I post this which I re-read on the design notes forum: Withdrawals: “In play-testing, it was found to be too easy to withdraw large chunks of troops if a turn 180 degree and move was allowed. (Too easy compared with historical accounts of battles). Hence the above restr...

Re: Evade-capable battle troops can turn 2x but not 1x???

No, sorry, I meant problems with how the game might or might not work with this modification, not with agreement over the rules.

Re: Evade-capable battle troops can turn 2x but not 1x???

Thanks for both these replies. I like Robkhan's suggestion. Can anyone see a huge problem in playing his suggested modification? I suspect Petedalby's explanation for the current rules is correct (would be good to hear from a moderator here). However, If the 'fall back but not move away' effect of t...

Evade-capable battle troops can turn 2x but not 1x???

Evade-capable formations of battle troops* are, if they pass a CMT, able to turn 180, move <=2MU, and turn 180 again (according to my reading of chart on p 42, Version II) But the same formation would not, it seems, able to turn 180 followed by only a simple advance (perhaps also only of <=2MU), a m...

Re: At 2 dice per base are knights overpowered in the melee?

1st crusades knights are armoured. So they have the same armour as ghilmen. Knights however fought in a much shallower formation than the ghulams, so the wider formation is modelled by giving them two dice in melee. They are more vulnerable to a base loss. Knights primary function was to charge at ...

Re: At 2 dice per base are knights overpowered in the melee?

Also, you've chosen an unusual formation for the cavalry - one deep. They'll fight two deep. If you put both lines at their optimal fighting depth, armoured cavalry are fine in melee against armoured knights and will usually beat them on base depth. Of course, they have to survive the impact phase ...

Re: At 2 dice per base are knights overpowered in the melee?

I think it's designed to make the knights (with their big horses, high saddles and heavy lances) better than other mounted at impact - charging through the walls of constantinople, etc. I think generally the moslem cavalry found out early on that it wasn't a good idea to take them on frontally. As ...

At 2 dice per base are knights overpowered in the melee?

Out on a flank, away from other BGs, a BG of 4 early crusader 'armoured' knight bases in a single rank clash with 4 'armoured' Saracen lancers (say 2x2 with an overlap knight base on either side - or single rank, doesn't matter). In the melee phase, it's 8 dice (knights) vs 4 dice (Saracens). Can an...

Re: Why are crusader knights heavily armoured in S&S army li

This is something that always puzzled me, but thought..."it's only a game and historical matchups usually sort things out" But in an open game running WOTR or 100 yrs war knights ,for example, I would feel a little ripped off vis a vis the 11th to 13th Century Knights. Robkhan I agree totally, I LO...

Why are crusader knights heavily armoured in S&S army lists?

Wondering why knights in the Late Crusader list in S&S are 'heavily armoured' since this list covers 12- 13th C, and, since from my reading horse barding (necessary for this armour rating) was rare for European knights even by the end of this time period. If this is not the right forum, please advis...

how important are base depths?

My gaming circle, using 5mm figures, are basing up using the following scheme; 30 x 15 mm HI (2 tight ranks of figures) 30 x 20 mm MF (2 looser ranks) LF (1 loose rank) 30 x 25 mm Cav (1 rank) 30 x 30 mm Elephants, etc, etc. However, some of the 5mm HF spearmen figures with spears inclined forwards ...

Paying 2 MUs for turns - a couple of questions.

1. Do evaders pay 2 MU for a 90 / 180 turn if this is part of their evade move? 2. If so, why in the evaders 90 degree turn does the side nearest the chargers become the rear of the battle group (pp 66-67, V1), implying a hastier turn (but at the cost for a full regular turn?) 3. Do broken troops pa...

Do these rules produce close combat too often?

I like these rules a lot but... ...it seems clear from a variety of historical sources that infantry formations almost never came into hand to hand combat in open ground. Defending units that failed to stop attackers by musketry, or attackers that were halted and counter-charged, virtually never sto...
