When I am using my Mid Republican Romans I use Cavalry commands for Cavalry commanders and infantry commands for the main line. I just prefer the look of the foot commander or commanders in the line. Same goes with the mounted. I tried to use mounted command in the line but didn't like the look. So ...

Prior to the Marian Reforms of 107 BC, legionaries supplied their own equipment. Indeed, the most controversial aspect of the Marian Reforms was that the state then equipped the legions, allowing the capite censi to serve. Thinking about this, I doubt there was much standardisation or consistency a...

Must admit I have wheeled out of a line of BGs on many occasions  .... course that doesn't mean its allowed!! :?: Seriously though, the rules neither forbid nor allow it explicitly. Certainly you cannot end your move sitting atop another base, and you have to have room to do a turn (this is ...

Matt, You say that there is no room for flexibility in Republican Roman army building. Maybe you are just not open-minded enough. You can have the legions laid out in the way you suggest, for the points you state using the larger or smaller of the options. Have you thought however of having one lar...

No one knows. An argument could even be made that there was no uniformity...to shields or tunics...or even armour...would have been an awful lots of 'grampa's helmet' type of thing. I have heard from more experienced gamers the same thing. Usually it comes down to preference. How can someone prove ...

Re: Anyone have experiance of www.magistermilitum.com figs?
I am sourcing my Late Imperial Roman figs ~( Early 300AD) and have looked at www.magistermilitum.com. The poses etc fit my requirments. As I have never seen this make on the gaming table. I understand they are close to Essex. Has any one any suggestions. My preference is for the more "chunky&q...

Most of our little group's games are spent trying to kill enemy units. In our first few games, we did expend units and time trying to get into the enemie's camp and party time it. For whatever reasons, most of our games ignore those camps in favor of going after enemy units. No one has ag...

How to get more FOG players
I was just curious. I would like to expand FOG here in Alberta Canada and was wondering if people know of popular web sites where you can post "gamers wanted" sort of thing? I need to get the word out but want to try to hit a bigger audience. The local crowd is mostly into DBA. But I know ...

Plantation Terrain
Hey Guys, Another terrain question if I could. I am planning on making a couple of plantation pieces for FOG and wanted to hear if I was on track for what I wanted to do. I was planning on flocking either an MDF board or rubber sheet the right size. Then on top of that I was thinking on using some 6...

Good points on the terrain placement. So far I have 4 hills, 5 fields done and will be working on 2 vineyards next. With some of the luck I get they will wind up on my opponents long edge :D . When my luck goes bad look out. And for us so far we have been playing exclusively the Punic War armies. I ...

Legion Sizes and Velite Division
Hey Guys, I'm playing another game on the weekend and am fielding the Mid Republican Romans. I was hoping someone could clear up a question for me regarding the army list. People have been suggesting that you can have BGs of 6 in a Roman legion but the army list says the following: 1) 2 BGs of 4 bas...

If you flank march three non-light BGs on that side then an enemy flank march can't get past you. Just my opinion but if my enemy wants to flank march and come on near the rear corner to sack my camp I am ok with that. Especially if he has more than 1 BG with him. It will have effectively taken him...

and not all armies have the option to fortify their camp. Actually this is something I did not know. I guess with each new army we field we should double check to make sure. Thanks for that as I am pretty sure we would have missed it and assumed that every camp can be either unfortified or fortifie...

Thanks for the posts guys, I was under the impression that everyone fortified their camps in private games as well as tournaments. But the more I am playing the more I realize that if you place your camp far enough away it will essentially take out or occupy whatever BG tries to sack it. Which is ki...

Unfortified Camps
I was just curious, does anyone actually use unfortified camps? if so, or not then why. Just looking for a different angle as I have just started to use camps and they have always been fortified, and I was curious if there is a reason for ever using an unfortified one. Thanks for any feedback Brian

Mounted swordsmen is almost the same as swordsmen, but: No swordsmen, skilled swordsmen or mounted swordsmen get a POA against mounted swordsmen. Foot swordsmen do not get a POA against foot swordsmen. Mounted swordsmen do not get a POA against any swordsmen. However skilled swordsmen do get a POA ...

QRS Question
Hey Guys, I was just reviewing the QRS for the various POA's and wanted to ask about the Melee section. Skilled Swordsmen get a + against any except El, mounted Sw or Steady Pk/Sp But Swordsmen get a + against any except El, Sw, SSw or Steady Pk/Sp Can I assume that mounted Sw is the same as Sw? In ...

After reading the section last night on legion sizes I think you are limited to 2 versions of a legion. 1) 2 BGs of 4 bases of Hastati and Principe + 1 BG of 2 bases of triarii = 10 bases 2) 2 BGs of 8 bases of Hastati and Principe + 1 BG of 4 bases of triarii = 20 bases The wording does say could a...
