I recently had a game with NKE v Hittites, the Hittites had 3 BG's of Heavy Chariots - they were awful for the Hittites and got absolutely shredded. Cost them the game in fact. Light Chariots were miles better in the particular role they were employed. As for Player - I still don't know what point ...

MF Offensive Spearmen

I am not convinced Medium Foot should ever be classed as Offensive Spear. From the FoG definition of Offensive Spearmen (p130): "Spearmen accustomed to adopting an aggressive phalanx formation, with the aim of attacking and defeating enemy foot. For example, Greek hoplites." I do not see t...

Pike-armed troops

The rules currently require pike-armed troops to be in three ranks in order to qualify for POA at impact or in melee. Spearmen receive the same POA for being in two ranks. I can see no historical justification for pikemen 8 deep being less effective than spearmen of the same depth. Certainly, Alexan...

Better armour POA

One problem in FoG at the moment is the "better armour" + POA in melee. This has a huge and unrealistic effect on the relative effectiveness of troops in combat, which I don't think is supported by examining the historical performance of troops. What problems does this POA cause? 1) Create...

Re: Geometry question

Thanks you very much, that is just what I needed. Common sense prevails! John Is it permissible for a rear corner of a moving battlegroup to briefly interpenetrate a friendly battlegroup? Yes is the simple answer, there was a thread on it somewhere in the distant past. Here: http://www.slitherine.co...

Geometry question

Is it permissible for a rear corner of a moving battlegroup to briefly interpenetrate a friendly battlegroup? I have always played that is was, but I can't find anything in the rules to support this view. I played a game yesterday without allowing this, but this caused some very frustrating problems...

Assyrians - excellent news

Thanks Richard for the helpful Assyrian info.

I look forward to digging out my Late Assyrians to play again, as I never liked them much under DBM.
Need to find a bunch more Bw, though at least I have a few months to sort them out before the list arrives :-)

Hi John, Thanks for doing this work! This is probably a naive question, but... Is there anyway to make this QRS available for download outside of the Yahoo Group? I don't want to have to keep joining the group, DL'ing the file, then unsubscribing from the group. Yes, I'm not a big fan of that group...

Unofficial QRS - new version

If any of you are using an old version of the unofficial QRS from the FoG Yahoo group, please be aware it has recently been updated and at least one error fixed (ommission of elephants from the exceptions to the POA + list for chariots at impact). If you are using an old version, it might be worth y...

Impact foot seems perhaps too good for biblicals? I would not have thought many would classify so highly even without swordsmen skill. Maybe sherden guards or something similar? There is a shortage of information about the Kushites and how they fought, but they did conquer Egypt and defeated the As...

Re: Capability Incompatibilities?

Thanks, Richard. It's very helpful to understand the design. Impact Foot can only have Swordsmen melee capability. (or nothing, theoretically, but we don't have any of those yet). What about Non-Swordsmen Impact Foot as representing troops with a fierce initial onset but much weaker in sustained me...

Late Assyrian HI question

Quick question - do you have a view yet on how you are likely to classify later Assyrian HI? Opinion seems to be divided among rule-writers whether they operated in mixed units of spear and bow or not. Do you have a view on this yet? I'd like ot know whether I need to buy a lot of bow to add to my e...

I have played several solo games (3 I think) while I was learning the rules. Nice way to compare the feel of the different ...

Can you check your tables for reason to test cohesion. It appears to have 1HP3B to shooting down twice, once under immediately where it belongs and one under the end of the phase where it does not. Ta Andy Thanks, fixed. I've also added a terrain effects table to both the one page and the two page ...
