Re: V4!
Nik, you can doubt the source evidence all you want but that's a personal opinion. First, no one alive today can actually say how ancients fought. So we extrapolate based on the best historical evidence we have. and sometimes different historical sources disagree. So this leaves us with option. Deny...

Re: News
Terry, Your plan below for redone army lists looks very good. Like most of the US, I switched to Art de la Guerre, in my case primarily because of the unhistorical and ridiculously straight jacked Byzantine lists which made almost all the Byzantine armies literally unplayable under FoG. Not that the...

Re: FOGAM3
OK, shorter reply than the one I tried to post and probably screwed up. I've always thought FOG was the best and most playable set of ancient rules. FOGAM3 has a lot of interesting ideas, that look like improvements. Glad to see there's a recognition that certain armies popular under other rules nee...

Byzantine Fire Grenadiers
From theByzantine newsgroup "BYZANS": http://time-lines.co.uk/byzantine-ceramic-greek-fire-hand-grenade-022779-33114-0.html The article URL above makes a serious case for the existence of Byzantine fire grenadiers, equivaletnt to those in certain Moslem armies such as the Mamluk Naffatun. ...

I'm pretty much a noob as a multi-player type but I'm willing to give it a go as a Byzantine.

Re: HAVOC 2013 FOG Tournament April 6th
Surprise is best tactic! :-) Maybe I just had a headache and didn't feel like banging my head against a wall again. Later Seleucids are so much more forgiving, even without Bow* Lancers. Anyway, that won't be a problem at the Dark Age Theme at Historicon. No pikes and only heavy knights. Could be fu...

Re: Generals
I've been using two FCs and two TCs. This seems to work really well for maneuver purposes. Paul G. Hi All, With the new rules regarding generals, what are people taking. Let's assume you're always going to want to take an IC because you like them. Let's also assume you have a force of about 12 BG's....

Re: 2013 US Team Tournament
What we could do is keep playing version 1.0 and adopt U.S. Tournament rules. This is what NASAMW did for their major tournaments using WRG 7th edition before they bought it and changed it to Warrior. Since we know pretty much what the changes are we can adopt them with the tournament organizers dec...

Marc, I thought you like 900 points, not 800. That's what we've had the last few tournaments at the major cons isn't it? Be nice if you could up the total for the Friday tournament. At any rate, love the Average Joe tournament idea. Might even now be able to bring Thematic Byzantine. Paul G. Field o...

Thanks and see you in April.

Once again the Byzantines are subjected to a higher standard, but so be it. First Syvanne is not solely a secondary source but an acknowledged expert in the field. You need to read his major work The Age of the Hippokonistai. The rules authors have acknowledged that they used that book as well. I ca...

How about the mentioned change of the current half lancer/half bowmen Byzantine cavalry to all lance, bow* for all periods up to the Nikephorian? Makes much more sense. Paul G Hopefully none of the lists will be changed using the 'new' rules as publication method. It appears likely that some changes...

Dismounting Byzantine Cavalry
There has been recent discussion on the lists about dismounting Westen Dark Age cavalry, but nothing on dismounting regular Byzantine Cavalry. Ilkka Syvanne's recent article "East Roman Cavalry Warfare and Tactics, C. 410 -641 Part 1, in the November 2011 issue of Slingshot makes it clear on pa...

You're absolutely correct. One only has to read the battle descriptions of the way they were Basil's favored shock troops and basically kicked butt on everyone they fought under Basil including Byzantines, Bulgarians, Georgians, Arabs. Frankly, they should count as superior as well. If anything they...

Tsk, tsk. Now you know only Fed-Ex can guarantee an arrival before 11am. And you definitely have to pay extra. FOG 2.0 Notes on Nikephorian Byzantine
In many ways the 10th, early 11th cent Byzantine army had more and varied troop types with their tactics and fighting style. In Jean Clause Cheynet’s article Basil II and Asia Minor in Paul Magdolino’s Byzantium in the Year 1000 . In his section on The army in Asia Minor, makes it clear that the arm...

Yes, having read Count Belisarius after reading Procopios, I was somewhat disappointed at the lack of any original point of view in Grave's novel. It was like why read the fiction book when I've already read the source.
